  • Hey everyone! I hope you all enjoy today's video - while travelling/visiting Gdansk, Poland I wanted to see which lens was better suited for travel photography. The 35mm or 50mm. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments!
I'm also SO excited to be here, I have so many video ideas that we're going to be creating over the next few weeks 💛

To me, 35mm is a winner for travel photography. When we say travel photography you want to include your backgrounds and show where you are. You’ll also be able to use it to take landscape photos, whereas 50mm is more focused on portraits most of the time.

I agree..if you use aps c sensor,35mm is more okay to use as travel lens, than 50mm.although i think it's still not quite wide enough. I prefer to bring 18-55 in my aps c sensor camera or 24-105 in my fullframe camera

35mm is suitable for street photography. But there is better lens like RF 15-35 and we don’t need brighter aperture for landscape. So I think RF 15-35 f2.8 and RF 50 f1.2 is best combination for photograph.

I think the way you describe the 2 different focal lengths as either "editorial" or "romantic" is spot on. I shot with a 50mm most of the time, and I loved the character and expressions and mood you can capture. After watching your videos I've been trying to experiment with a 35mm to create more interesting environmental compositions and its challenging! With the 50mm it just simplified the composition to capture artistically a mood or a moment. But when I use the 35mm when it connects with an interesting location, it looks really cool. Almost like a story board frame,, which emphasizes lines, the environment,, and and subjects relationship to the environment.. I'm constantly torn whether to bring one lens or the other on family trips as I don't want to fiddle around with lenses...and for some reason I dislike zooms. The curse or a hobbist!

I usually love 35MM better - more experience traveling with this lens...BUT I recently bought a very cheap Nikkor 50mm manual lens which I used on Sony A7R and the photos came sharper than my Canon 35mm 1,4 L...so I will keep them both !...Remember also that Henri Cartier Bresson shot all his wonderful pictures with only ONE lens...a 50 mm ! Just a quick note... I don't get why you should shoot a panorama (6'00") at f2.2 with an EF 35 f1.4. Clearly, this lens, if you look at the MTF diagrams, is supersharp from f1.4 to f11. But from f1.4 to f2.8 you have from 2 stops to 1 stop of vignetting. And in your shot, you see it clearly. Personally, I prefer adding vignette only in post, without needing to remove it...
My personal choice for travel goes to EF16-35 f2.8 and EF24-70 f2.8.
    This is, obviously, IMHO.
Btw, I love the way you edit the videos. Very nice and smooth and... With a little point of pink :-)

I use a 28 because I like to capture a lot of context. and then Super-35 mode when I want to get tighter (this auto-crops to APSC- roughly equivalent to 42mm). For portraits, and photographing animals I carry an 85mm which is around 128mm in crop mode.
Very flexible setup and I still get 8 MP on the crop mode which is plenty unless you want to print large size.

Close-ups with the 35mm will tend to give visual distortion of the subject. Otherwise, most folks will prefer the wider perspective of the 35mm. A better question would be why would you travel with full sized, full frame cameras with the largest, heaviest large aperture lenses. After lugging that load around, you won't care which lens you are using. Better yet, shove a Contax T2 with 400 speed film in one pocket, take one or two good shots when you want (not 25) and enjoy your trip.

In my opinion the 35mm is more versatile for travel since I like to photograph where I’ve been, I’m not interested in being the main subject of the trip. The 50mm is a little too tight and limited and more useful for portrait photography. There’s more to the lens in photography, style, composition, camera, etc. My two cents.

I find myself taking a lot of 'street photography' when travelling and for that I seem to reach for the Batis 25mm, rather than the 35mm - I suppose it depends on your shooting style. But each to their own - 35mm is a very versatile focal length.

Buildings are slightly straighter when pointing upwards with the 50mm. With the 35mm they look like they're leaning against the clock tower a bit too much. That's when you see how impactful perspective distortion can be, and how cropping a 35mm isn't the same as using a 50mm on a full frame, because when cropped the buildings would still be leaning more.

I agree with you, the 35mm is more versatile and, even for portraits I prefer the framing with this focal because you see more of the environment, eventually with a nice shallow depth of field.
As a user of m43 system, the Olympus 17,5mm f1.2 is a logical choice for me. For this system, this lens (or the Olympus 17,5mm f1.8 or Panasonic 15mm f1.7) is perhaps the best travel lens.

All I can say as from my experience, that for street style, 35mm is the king, but for budoir and lifestyle (in enterior environment that you want to show), you really need that 50mm low distortion. I own both the Sigma 35 and 50 lenses and I use them for these 2 different purposes.

Well, they both have their uses, but if I can only take one lens it's the 35. Often enough you can't back up further, but you can always crop in post. Not the same as having a 50, but still. It's something.
Also, if I put my D810 with a 35 on it in 1.2x crop mode I get 25 mpix files at 42mm, which is supposedly the focal length our eyes operate at. I'd love to see an actual 42mm lens from someone though.

Possibly you can always go closer if you need more zoom, of course there's distorsion with the 35mm in comparison to the 50mm, but in certain cases you cannot just go far from a subject with the 50mm and you cannot in that case took the photo at all.

Personally I go with 24-70mm f/2.8. Between the 35 and 50mm primes I'd go with a Sigma 35mm f/1.4. This gives me the option to capture more background, or crop in for a more 50ish field of view and/or manually apply lens corrections in post in either LR or PS to replicate a 50 or other lens. LR and PS are the great equalizers.

There is not a huge difference when you are using faster lenses like 1.4 or 1.2.
You will start noticing the bokeh of 35mm is less than 50mm.
    For me I'm a 50mm fan no matter what situation I have. I have 85 1.4 nikon, 50 1.4 & a 35mm 1.8dx ( Works fine on D850 Full frame). I started my photography with D5100 crop body with 50 1.8g & I did all types of portraits.
So 50mm is always a go to lens to create drama. I am not rich man so I sticked with Nikon for affordable lenses. Only If I ever face a situation where the place is tight, I would use 35mm & vice versa.

What I saw is that it mostly comes down to how you position yourself for the shot.. The 35 is better for tight spaces where you cannot get further back from the subject but want to include more of the surroundings - for example inside a building.. Whilst the 50 will help getting in tight from further away, such as peoples faces without being right in their face.. They both have their pro's and con's depending on the situation and desired end result..

I have a strange ambivalence, because I understand the principle that you can't go further with the 50mm lens in certain situations, but apart from that (especially indoors), the 50mm is somehow more orderly and gives the eyes a more pleasant space, the 35mm feels like it's too much in the picture, which I want to cut later when I have decided which part it should be.

Bring both! Both are great travel companions. Those two lenses for your video footage was great too. The ultra wide walk-and-talk vlogging is terrible in comparison to how good your video looked with these focal lengths. Well done.

On a crop sensor a 35mm lens will give you an image that’s pretty close to the 50mm lens field of view on a full frame. I have a 24mm lens for my APS-C crop sensor camera that gets pretty close to the 35mm field of view on a full frame camera, and definitely recommend it.

so on a APSC you wont be able to get much with the 50mm? cuz it would be too zoom in?

  • @dopehead9

I would always go for a FX body with a 24mm attached equivalent to 16mm in DX for travel /street/landscape almost anything.

if for travel, I would tske the 35mm, for portrait/headshot 50mm... but honestly, since your prime lenses are huge and heavy as well, I don’t see any reason not to take a 24-75 f2.8

35 or 50mm ON WHAT SIZE SENSOR? Kind of impossible to have a sensible discussion without knowing that up front. On full frame, I like 50mm all the way but on crop sensor 35 would make more sense for me.

50mm = more for isolating objects or people
35mm = showing more of the surroundings which is in my opinion better for travel photography.
but at the end it's a matter of taste :).
    (I would travel with a fast 16-18mm, 35mm/F1.8 and optional 85mm/F1.8. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for a compact 35mm/F1.8 from Sony :D)

Same here ... I agree with you, the 50mm is better for portraits and/or isolating a subject from the background.
However, a 85mm lens is considered the perfect portrait lens.

Traveling and touring is pretty much taking in more of scene (35mm) than an individual ...generally your not taking portraits (50mm) when traveling/touring/site seeing! Crop a bit to get in closer then!

wow, nice comparison for prime lenses.
one thing I saw is for landscape if u had used small aperture with more f stops the landscape would have been sharp and clear than smooth.
I am a beginner I just shared my view I hope u don't mind as a professional to get feedback from beginner
