Oh DUUUUDE! I owe YOU a beer!! My beloved T25 (as we Brits call em) has been tempremental for months on end, refusing to turn over properly. NO book or forum has helped. I cleaned the earth cable as you do in this vid, and BOOM! Never run better!
Ya, the whole other half of electrical power supply to starter is supplied through that big ground strap between trans and frame. I actually just replaced the entire cable the other day as further preventative maintenance. Been dealing with starter teeth skipping on flywheel. Should post another video some day. Cheers from Canada. Glad to help
Great video. Going to check everything you mentioned. Likely will still install a hard start kit. Could make a good follow up video :) Btw my stomach was in knots watching you tap your finger back and forth between ground terminal and wire - careful we still need more videos :)
Also forgot to mention. The 1 in long ground cable from starter solenoid to starter motor. It's gets corroded. Also, it's the reason one might replace the whole frigin unit cuz it's good at breaking.
I've been trying to troubleshoot solo a weird sudden issue. I was trying to get my 82 started, battery was low so I boosted it. Cranking while boosting.. I got partial fire on 2 cyls but not enough to run. I cranked for awhile, with almost getting it running. But then suddenly on additional crank attempts I started to hear a grinding/slow crank. The motor is attempting to turn over because clutch out in gear and crank (likely terrible to do but I needed to know) the van tries to ever so slightly lurch fwd. With gear disengaged the starter won't fully crank the motor anymore. Starter motor gone bad? Throw out bearing causing it to not fully engage? I'm not hugely mechanical, but want to try a bit more before giving up and calling for a tow to a shop.
Really good video. It’s saved in my “so your van won’t start” folder … lol

Oh Great Sage, I humbly thank you for your electrical wisdom. took care of my slow crank issue in my '85. Cheers!

12V cannot transmit enough current through our bodies. We are big ole resistors to a 12V circuit. Hope you got your van up n running.
Thanks for the info!
Thanks for the video! Just bought an '85 westy that didn't start today... will try this tomorrow!
Did this video help your no start issues?? My 85 Vanagon will not crank but I can hear clicking. I was thinking of trying this as well.
Z G same thing happened to me. Won't start after a long run.

Well done , thank you

88 GL - following along, 12.8@battery, starter connection (13mm), trans ground, engine grounds...GND@battery....I'll let you know how it goes
