These Vanagon repair videos are great! I’ve been able to keep mine on the road (250,000 miles as of yesterday) thanks to your channel! Glad to see your back!
Thank you for watching!
Welcome back Thomas
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for helping to get and keep, my 91 T3 on the road so far for over a decade.
Thank you for watching!
Great to see you again! Thomas. Great video as always!
Great to see these videos back online. I cannot tell you how many of them I have used to fix and repair my 1995 Eurovan.
Thank you for watching!
Yay! New VW videos from you!
Good to see you publishing new videos about VW ,it reminds me of my good times working on the Vanagons.Have a Good week.
You too Tony!
Old school diagnostics for old cars :) love it
So the fuel was bleeding into cylinders continuously when key was on, and the fuel pump couldn't keep up. Or did computer cut out the fuel pump when it recognized the injectors were constantly on? Good thing it didn't hydrolock.
Fuel pump cycles once when key is on. Pressure bled off because pump stopped running. During cranking, pump runs, but can't build pressure because injectors are all open. Not enough flow to hydrolock... fuel just pumps through the cylinders into the exhaust when the engine is cranking. Thank you for watching.
Great troubleshooting and explanation
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video. I really appreciate your content and systematic approach to solving problems 😊
Thank you for watching.
Nice and clear diagnosis.
It's amazing those ECU's still work after all this time.
I must admit I have a couple in the stash but as I went for an aftermarket ECU I should probably sell them will all the other parts.
Sitting on gold! =)
Nice one! Thanks for the video. Anyone can tell you have a ton of experience.
Well, it's about time Thomas. missing those videos, now let me go see the video. :)
Thank you for watching!
You are a smart guy. I'm a Vanagon person.
Thank you for watching!
20 minutes, well done!
If I had worn the glasses... would have been a better video. Also would have kept better time (I was guessing it was 20 min).
I had the same issue with my vanagon. New ECU was the fix
Great video brotha!!!
Thank you for watching!
good video. Keep them coming
Thank you for watching!
Nice job mate
Thank you for watching!
Nice one buddy. I can't believe them vehicles are still around never mind someone that knows how to work on them :)
They are worth more and more each year. I should have bought one as an investment.
I love my van, best bang for the buck.
Maybe I should get one and cut the back off and
make it into a mini minivan.
Good to see ya. Happy Motoring
Thank you for watching!
Waiting for that ECM board repair :P Just some mosfet burnt?
Me too!
That was an interesting one.. shorted driver keeping injectors on?
Yeah... we're gonna send it out to get repaired. I'd probably fry more trying to fix it! LOL
Thomas , I need to do a timing belt on my 2004 BEW tdi, what is a good timing tool kit for the cam and crank , and timing belt kit, thanks Eddie

There are many DIY tech article that you can follow... they all list the factory tool numbers. Simply Google the part number, to find tool availability.
Hi. I have crank no start on my new to me ‘91 westy. I put a length of fuel line on the t junction and no fuel came out while cranking. Am I right in suspecting I need to replace the fuel pump? Thanks and love your videos.
Yes, possibly.
Use a test light to verify power at the fuel pump relay "feed" and at the fuel pump relay "outlet" to make sure the relay is OK. Then, check for power at the pump (while someone is cranking the engine with the key). If power is present, but the pump doesn't buzz, replace the pump.
At the back of the alternator are 2 red wires mounted to the alternator by a 13mm nut. Make sure that both wires are ok. The smaller one of the two feeds the relays... when broken, the engine won't start.
@@EXOVCDS thanks Thomas!
Hi I have a 2001 Jetta aww 1.8t that just stalled and will crank but not run, it will start and run for a few seconds on carb cleaner. I am at a loss. Any insight would be greatly appreciated
Fuel pump, fuel pump fuse?
Learning from other content creators this is common on Ford Ranger ECUs. Some capacitors die in the ecu. I wonder if this is a similar problem?
At 30 years old... I can only imagine how many times the injector driver has turned on & off. Guess it finally had enough. LOL
I'm having this same issue with my 81 vanagon. Will the diagnostic method be similar?
Similar, but also different.
Ignition points in the distributor or hall sensor?
MENGA MINT!!!
Troubleshooting a similar problem. Where can I get the led light? And best source for an ECU in case I need one? Thanks!

Google search the part number that's on your ECU... to find used or refurbished units.
@@EXOVCDS thanks for the quick reply!

Hi Thomas, how should I contact you regarding work on a vehicle?
I don't give out work location. If you happen to find the shop, feel free to book. We are quite booked solid for at least 4 weeks.
Hey Thomas I've got a 01 Jetta 1.8t 5 speed. I believe the clutch went out on me. But I'm concerned because should I still be able to start the car in gear to move it around? I've done that with other vehicles with bad clutches but this one I can't. The pedal still feels normal. And don't hear any noise in the clutch. The trans shifts through all gears. I even trying starting the car in second gear to move it but it won't engage at all. Is the clutch just completely broken?
If the clutch is completely fried, it won't move / put power to the wheels.
Also check your axle shafts. A broken cv also won't allow power to the wheels.
@@EXOVCDS alright thanks man 🙏
@@EXOVCDSalso I’m doing the clutch on the car right now. I’m breaking the axel nut loose and shouldn’t it lock that transmission when I put it in gear? I already have the screwdriver in the break rotar and the axle still spins even though it’s in gear also
@rudd2161 the set screw is not holding the disc.
@@EXOVCDS the set screw broke. I even had the break pedal pressed with a pry bar against the seat. Now the rotor is staying in place but the axel is still spinning. Shouldn’t it not spin if the cars in gear? I’m confused
Hi again buddy, p0261 p0264 p0267 p0270 p0445 p0037 p0418 p0414 p0141 all these codes have popped up on the reader on my a4 1.8t, if I erase codes the car will start but it still doesn't help me with the underlying issue, is there anything you can recommend, many thanks
If the engine runs, then there's no power supply issue to the injectors & other sensors. So I don't know why those codes are being flagged. A fuel pump relay that intermittently doesn't supply power to those components or doesn't supply power as quickly as the ECM expects, could cause those codes to be set.
@@EXOVCDSthankyou for your reply its much appreciated, i have already replaced fuel pump relay the other week due to no start issues and was running great for a month and now started to no start with all the codes, its becoming rather annoying now haha
@@lukestreet4514 you said it was running when you clear the codes. If it isn't, then you have to check power to the fuel pump relay and power getting from the relay to those components. New relays can go bad.
@@lukestreet4514 the relay closes a circuit... but the fuse that feeds the relay circuit still has to be good. Is it?
@@EXOVCDS yes buddy, every fuse has been checked and is in good condition,
I looked in the attached diagram for something that I'd noticed relating to injector power (not the signal) on the 1986 Automatic 2.1 - that is the wire that runs from the alternator to the harness along the engine comparment firewall and to one of the engine compartment control boxes I can't recall which. It was a 10 guage very finely stranded wire and on my otherwise reasonly well preserved GL that wire had totally deteriorated, even the silver plated copper wire - it looked as if it has been stressed electrically. I write all this because I was going to ask you about it - as to theories of why that would accur. Hope I'm recalling correctly but I just replaced the original finely stranded silver coated copper wire with the best one I could find and I think I increased it to 8 guage if the original was 10 gauge. You probably have this VW Factory wiring diagram but here it is for your readers: (there are many differences btwn models)
www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/1985_86_wiring_vanagon/1985_86_Vanagon_Wiring_Diagrams.pdf
Thanks for sharing. Yes I've come across the same wire being broken or having a bad connection... resulting in a no start.
