  • In this video I explain the step by step process of removing and replacing a starter from a Volkswagen Vanagon.
The process isn't very hard! It's a job anyone can do with the right tools!
If you have any questions drop them below!
    TOOLS
    -8mm Allen Wrench
    -11/16 Wrench
    -13mm socket wrench
    -15mm Wrench
    -Power Drill
    -7/16 Tap
    STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
    1. Remove negative battery terminal
    2. Remove airbox and hose
    3. Remove bolt and nut on the top left side of the starter using the 8mm Allen wrench and the 11/16 wrench. This step can be done from above
    4. Remove the electronics behind the starter by pulling the cable and using the 13mm socket wrench to remove the nut holding the battery cables to the starter.
    5. Remove the bolt on the bottom right side of the starter using the 15mm wrench. This must be done from under the van.
    6. Remove the starter.
    7. Using the 7/16 tap and power drill, remove the bearing
    8. Insert new bearing.
    9. Replace starter.
    10. Put all bolts, nuts, and cables back.

This is a super helpful video. Well done!!!
Just fyi, I called GoWesty about the bushing shown here. Apparently the GW starters do not require the bushing. Just so folks are aware.

Great vid. Putting that bushing back in is not a cake walk. Do you happen to have the part number for the starter that you installed or where you purchased it? thank

I've heard that the new gear reduction starters don't require the bushing and all the photos show that they dont have that central support post that fits into the bushing. They look flat on the end of the blade wheel. Is that what your new starter looks like? Your video is the most helpful one I've seen but I was wondering if you encountered that issue? Thanks!

My WOSP Hi-Torque Gear reduction starter did not require a bushing. I did remove the old bushing but the repair guy at Van Cafe said I didn't need to. (See comment above) I did call VanCafe to be sure though.
