    Fantastic thank you for making something both useful and beautiful, Padauk is not an easy wood to use, although Stavros made it look otherwise, in long thin lengths it is brittle, planing by hand is a nightmare as it is cross grained, I was making radiussed trimms for the ceiling of our second 1st class carriage with padauk today, on a spindle moulder, when the grain is against you, it will chatter and chip out lumps, even a half millimeter cut, when using chisels as in this episode, follow Stavros's guide to sharpening them, go back to his earlier episodes, - my chisels have never been sharper. I was also using a palm router, cutters must be tungsten tipped and sharp or they will burn the wood. At 24 06 the freshly cut wood is bright red/orange, the older wood is darker, this is because the timber darkens on contact with the air, and will continue to do so untill after a month or more it will look like old mahogany, such a shame it won't hold the bright colour. Masks, yes, wear one, when ripping lengths on a saw, or orbital sanding, the fine dust will make you sneeze for two hours, been there done that. Yes I gave Stavros the wood, I was curious as to what he would do with it, no disappointments there of course. Congratulations Alan, that piece of padauk started out in West Africa, went to Tilbury Dock- East of London, then Yorkshire England, then Wales, then Poland. I wonder where it will finish it's journey, I'm sure you will treasure it.

      Hello there Simon,
      I had a doubt, but I made the mistake I feared, and that was thinking it was Bubinga. My first impression was Padouk, and thanks to you I realise my mistake. Of course Bubinga (also African) is much more pink, but it's hard too. Yes, Padouk is a real bugger of a wood- brittle as ever, and VERY prone to chipping.
      I think you made the best ever investment in offering that block to Stavros (very unusual, a Greek name, and a Polish gentleman). Just look at what he made out of it! Lucky Allen.
      By the way, not being cheeky or anything, would you be able to supply an offcut to a retired cabinet maker that I am? At a cost of course. I live in France (Brittany) where finding a single drop of decent cabinet wood is like pearl fishing.
      My God, our friend Stavros is really quite a gentleman. I have so much respect for him. That was great of you to supply him.
      God bless. Stay safe.
      Ralph

      @@musamor75 im not going to be a supplier of off cuts to the Stavros community, this was purchased by the company I work for, so it's not mine to give away, this was a one off for Stavros, because I knew he would make a video with it, for us his viewers and subscribers, I bought the wood off cuts, and paid for the postage to Poland, for it's an expensive wood and the pieces we have now after finishing the carriage are not suitable or large enough for much other than drawer slides. Any larger pieces are in reserve for when we need to replace and repair. I'm very happy you enjoy Stavros, now all is not lost, if you visit this railway, i may find something for you.

    • @musamor75
      @musamor75 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Simon M Cowan Hello there Simon,
      Thank you ever so much for your reply. I fully understand about the wood supply, and the preciousness of certain timbers- I was a cabinet maker after all. By the way, this wood also bears the name of "Corail" in French, meaning Coral wood. It's true, it can be a bugger to work with. You mentioned "carriages" and that did bring trains to mind. However you didn't mention the name of the firm so I can't look it up. Maybe you prefer not to. Please don't think I was being cheeky- I just hope I didn't come across as that. I left Paris where I worked for 30 years four years ago and am living in the sticks where I cannot get ANY decent wood whatsoever.
      Stavros does some really great stuff. I personally don't know of anyone else who makes so many hand tools. He's really clever and seems to have been bitten by the tool bug. I had a collection of antique beech moulding planes- every one I sharpened. They were stolen in a Paris workshop. My belief in humanity sunk to zero from thereon. I still have a big collection of tools that I pull out for the odd job, because I was taught to do everything by hand- hence my great respect for Stavros. Just completed a miniature chest of drawers, morticed and tenoned and hand-cut dovetails in retrieved oak. Challenging but a joy to make.
      I'm glad to hear that you also work in solid (beautiful) timber, so rare nowadays. Keep it up.
      Best regards. Greetings from France and all the best for the New Year.

    Do you have somewhere to go to see all the tools you have made over the years? I was about to describe some of them to my wife and I wondered if you’ve ever set them out on your workbench and made a video or community post.

    Outstanding. Been looking for a butt mortise repair depth tool that can be used on the difficult top hinge while the door is still hanging on the other hinges.
    Ive probably done hundreds of these mortise repairs with a chisel in the last 40 years. Seems like a difficult challenge hanging a bit off the end of the base block or what ever would be used? Thanks for your thoughts or attempt to perfect this new tool, I think, maybe it already exists but I just cant find it.
