070 Toted coffin smothing plane - part 1

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 ต.ค. 2024
- Some time ago Simon from the UK send me some lovely pieces of wood.
Few of them were perfect to build a coffin smoothing plane with closed tote and mouth closer - so, let's build one!
The wood is Paduk.
The iron was made by Ferdinand Rubens a long time ago.
This project will be upoaded in two parts, one video would be too long.
In the next episode i'm gonna make the tote and the coffin shape.
See you soon :)
Merry Christmast!
BTW. I don't take orders and usually i don't sell my planes.
The most sure way to get some of them is take a part in giveaways for my supporters.

Got it some of the most beautiful beech I've ever seen
I own an antique toted coffin plane. It's one of the most magnificent planes and examples of craftmanship I've ever seen. The tote feels amazing in your hand.
Superb craftsmanship and attention to detail in every respect. Many thanks for sharing your incredible skills and passion for plane making - the videos are a joy to watch and learn from.
9:44 cute dog!
What? Merry Christmas to me. Another video from one of my favorite Craftsman. Thanks
Told myself the same!

Maybe one day my skills will be at that level. One day.
Merry Christmas! 😊
I"m as impressed with the sharpness of your tools as much as the plane! Very meditative watching the shavings coming off the chisels. Strangely relaxing!
Thank you! I showed my way of sharpening in the video no 063. Cheers!
great work as always. I have watched many of your videos - like the addition of the extra light source and the longer pause when marking the details. The closer shots also add value. Thanks man and keep on working. BTW, I also like your shop friend!
Amazing! Your hands and eyes to healty. Merry christmas
hey stavros, great to see you again …. Thank you for this quality content.
Wow! I love that he included information about what the wood was used for! What a cool letter

Maestro!!
Parabéns,,,,e Feliz Natal
I’ve used Padauk before, difficult wood to work with, but you make it seem so effortless! Excited to see the second part. Merry Christmas!
Forgive me. I'm taking a moment to vent, since we're talking about difficult woods to work with...
I DESPISE PURPLE HEART!
Sorry. I'm done now.
@@oldmantwofour5561 Ipé is pretty bad too, would have never worked with it if I hadn't found that piece thrown out in a ditch lol
Great, merry christmas to you 👌👍.
Enjoyed seeing you working!

Watching you work is a master class. What more can I say?

Thank you :) merry Christmast!
Now that is very nice, Stavros. Wishing you and your family a peaceful and love filled Christmas.
Thanks for the video, Hope you had a Merry Christmas, too.
Wow, best video yet. I can really clearly see everything you show. I’m going to have to step up my videography. Superb. Thanks for sharing. I so enjoy watching great craftsmanship.
Thank you William, i hope you are well 💪👍
22:41 Whoa! Brave, brave man.......
Reading of the grain direction is the key 😉
@@StavrosGakos No doubt!
Beuitiful job Stravos. You are an extremely talented craftsman. Do you use floats ??? Looking forward to part ll . P.s. is that a Spires smoother ? Like mine ??? 🤷♂️
Thanks Tom! I use, but i have only few of them - mainly edge floats. It is Norris no 5 or A5 - the tote is not original so i can't say wich numer it is. Cheers and happy new year!
23:16 Oh Yeah that's like machine gun 😄
Awesome job sir.
the video is great, as usual I would say 🙂 but the story of the origin of the wood is really great too 💯👍👍👍 can't wait to see the rest ✌️
Your skill is inspirational!
Hope you had a good Christmas Stavros, wishing you and your family a very happy New year, best wishes to you all, from a vintage Carpenter in England 🇬🇧 .
Great to see you again! Fantastic work as always! A happy and healthy 2023 to you and your loved ones!
Always been a pleasure watching your videos. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
I am extremely impressed with the work you do. Do you have any recommendations for resources such as books or videos on how to get started making wooden planes? I have a pipedream of making a set of wooden body bench planes at some point (scrub, smoother, jack, and jointer) and am unsure of how one starts.
Thank you, check John M Whelan 👍
Merry Christmas Stavros.
Unbelievable work. Very nicely done. I know chopping through that paduak could not have been easy either. Quick question- can you tell me where you got the thin push saw/float at 11:51? That thing would be so handy for setting depth like you did as compared to my thick edge floats. Thanks again, and great work as always.
Thank you, it was my keyhole saw - i've made it some time ago
Merry Christmas. Nice work
Thank you :) merry Christmast!
Merry Christmas! Love the close ups of the details. Thank you. The shop is looking good.
Hey Walter! Merry Christmast :)
Great work! Super impressive
Merry Christmas To You and All of Yours. Your video made my day - this is going to be a great plane!!
Awesome Stavros! 🙂 And a very merry christmas!
Beautiful work, dude! It's looking amazing already! 😃
Looking forward to the next part!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Merry Christmas and happy new year!
Oh man, a toted smoother was one of the first things I ask you to make someday and here we are!!! Thanks, Gakos. Merry Christmas
Thanks Luiz! All the best for you 🤟
Great as always! Wood looks very much like Brazilian mahogany.
Is there a video where you show how to carve the concave feature on the wedge?
Two days ago, while cleaning my tools, I realized the other day that I made a rosewood wedge for my mahogany plane and a mahogany wedge for my rosewood plane (this one is more than 100 years old and almost unused, but needed a new wedge). They were built by chance with the wood I had in time for each.
Thanks for sharing your amazing skills again and merry Xmas!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, your family and all the friends you have made with this channel from all over the world.
Seasons greetings from the high plains of Texas.
Beautiful. After watching you work I feel like I should just throw away my chisels. But I don't, and I won't.
Merry Christmas.
Don't do this :) Marry Christmast!
Piękny prezent na Święta, mówię o filmie 😉 Dzięki za film i czekam na part2. Wszystkiego dobrego Tobie i Twoim Bliskim
Merry Christmas Stavros
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 ❤, Exellent chisel work, wonderful, waiting for part 2. Best wishes.
Thank you :) merry Christmast!
i feel like im learning secrets from a master
Very very nice
I love your skill and patience. Would you possibly build a laminated version using contrasting woods?
Thank you, i'm not a fan of laminated planes but maybe one day :)
Beautiful work as always, Stavros. Merry Christmas.
What is the thickness of the saw that you use at around the 12 minute mark? It looks like an interesting tool. I assume you made it yourself ? Another excellent video. Thank you.
Thank you, yes i made it, about 3mm thick 👍
Merry Christmas.!
I still can't figure out: how you can use a pen and be way more accurate than the width of the pen line!
Merry Christmast! The lines are only for the orientation :)
Merry Christmas to you Stavros !
Excellent craftsmanship! Like always, love your work and your love of beautiful wood! Any plane that you would suggest a beginner could do?
Thank you! Any kind of bench plane with single iron will be a good project for the beginner :)
Nice work, always fun to watch. Merry Christmas to you and your family, and thank you!
also Stavros, have you had good luck with your jointer/planar combo, and could you tell us what kind it is?
Hey Stan, i use it mainly for the short pieces of wood, it's perfect for it 👍
Salute to u my bro.. This is some very fine workmanship you're doing here my friend..
Typically how long would this tyoe of work take u to get finished? This is defo not a one day job I'm pretty confident in saying?? Ok not very confident in saying that bcos I don't honestly know but I'm guessing it takes more than a day or 2.. Maybe a week of working out the chiselling and everything else that goes into a precision cut piece like this plane.. I love watching these videos bro. Using our hands to make tools is a fast dimishing skill/Artform imho.. Keep up the brilliant work man and keep great videos like this one coming. I'm learning a lot from watching and doing bits while watching. The good thing about the videos is I can go back and watch parts I've forgot and rewatch again to refresh it in my mind. I have the attention span of a flea bro.. I'm joking of course..or am I?!?!
Hope u had a good Xmas and all the best in 2023 too man..
I’m curious about the mouth closer. This plane and another coffin smoother you made has this feature. What is the advantage of a mouth closer block, vs designs without them?

As always 👍
Beautiful, beautiful work Stavros. What a thrill it would be to apprentice for you. Would you mind telling me the size of the blank you started with?
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Hey Jerry! Thanks a lot 🙂 the answer is in 2:12 👍 merry Christmast!
Outstanding! Question, how did you learn all of this? Did you learn from a book, someone, or did you just started to make planes by figuring it out yourself?
Hey Josias! Thanks a lot for your support! I've done some woodworking as a child. All my planemaking i was learning in my workshop, alone with google help :) Cheers!
Nice!
Hello I just subscribed Excellent videos....So regarding the flattening if the bed I see you use a chisel with a guide block and also sandpaper glued to the back of the iron. So no bed float is needed am I correct?
Hey Keith! If you have a bed float you can use it. Piece of the sandpaper glued on the back of the chisel is not the only way for it. Cheers
@@StavrosGakos Hello again Thank you for your reply ...also are you familiar with the blunt chisel method? and do you like it? Also it's good to know that I do not need to buy floats
Before seeing your work I thought only Japanese can do such precision woodworking.
Dziękuję Piotr :)
Amazing craftsmanship, master Stavros! :) I enjoyed every minute. I tend to get excited to try my hand at this, but... seems easier than it is. Hehe!
You should build one, but remember - it may be addicted 😁
I was worried there wasnt going to be a snap! Then it happened. I csn sleep at night now
So this mouth-closing wedge... It has to align perfectly in line with the sole. Seems like a tall order with a material that changes when it rains.
All wooden planes should be carefully storage, but rain in the workshop is not possibile :)
