Dad took us there for race day, I was 11, came home with a race tyre. Not a lot of footage of it around. Probably the best spectator track there is, from the grandstand you can see virtually the whole track.

This race took place one week after the 1988 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide. Stefan Johansson and Eddie Cheever raced in both.
Johansson finished 9th in Adelaide in a Ligier Judd and 2nd here in a Sauber Mercedes with ex-F1 driver Mauro Baldi. Cheever was a DNF in his Arrows Megatron in Adelaide, the last race for the old BMW M12 turbo. Teamed with fellow F1 pilot Martin Brundle (the 1988 World Sports-Prototype Drivers' Champion), he finished 3rd at Sandown in a TWR Jaguar.
The only Australian car in the field, the 6.0L V8 powered Veskanda Chevrolet designed and built in Adelaide by K&A Engineering, qualified 8th in a field of 18 (7 seconds slower than Jean Louis Schlesser's pole winning Sauber Merc) and finished a credible 8th on the road, but without the sophisticated fuel monitoring of the big budget teams like Sauber and TWR, they knew they'd probably go over the fuel allowance so in effect they just went out to go as fast as they could and finish, which they did. Yes they were DQ'd, but they'd achieved their goal and hadn't been disgraced despite probably having about 1/20th the budget of a Sauber or TWR.

For the record, the ground effects Veskanda had around 550 bhp (de-tuned from 600 for an "endurance" race rather than the sprints it usually did) back in 1988 whereas when Paul Stubber ran the car in Europe in 2011-2013, the much more worked and sophisticated 6.0L V8 in the car was pumping out closer to 700 bhp. The 5.0L twin turbo Mercedes and the 7 litre V12 Jags had around 800 bhp, even back in 1988.

Did Group C run a single slick compound? I know they had Dunlop, Michelin, Avon, Yokohama, Bridgestone...
Thanks for the great video too!

@@BarryPrice1959 Actually I walked straight into the Silk Cut Jaguar pit during pre-race prep for the Silverstone 1000 kms. It was 87 or 88 .. nobody challenged me. I was literally IN the garage with the mechanics. I stood very still and tried not to get in the way. Unbelievable, but it really happened !!! Mind you - if Tom Walkinshaw had walked in, I bet he would have thrown me out on my ear 😂
