I was there, sitting at the Senna chicane as a 6 year old, in absolute awe at the variety of cars - the Panoz to this day is one of the loudest racing cars I have ever heard. The event itself was fantastic, just a massive shame it was only held once.
My uncle was there too. He called us at home on the Gold Coast to say happy new year, and dad passed the phone around so that we could each hear the cars in the background. I wish the event could have continued. It was so unique.
I live in Adelaide. The race had no local TV coverage in Australia, was pitifully advertised, and despite what this video says, the attendance was low. By comparison, the last F1GP in Adelaide had 500,000 people over the weekend. It was also a totally daft time to run a motor race. If it was run in November or March, it would have been better. Who is going to give up family New Year to attend a motor race? Only a dedicated petrol-head, not the families that the F1GP and V8 Supercars fostered.
Was one of the best races I ever went to! Had gold seats on the start finish line. Kept all the merchandise I bought and still have tinnitus from the Judd engines coz man they were the loudest thing I’d heard on that track and I attended every F1 GP. Don Panoz had an office in Adelaide and was planning to build his race cars here. Great memories.
I was a flag marshal at Flag Point #7, where the Audi went into the wall at the 5:15 mark. The Audi ran along the wall and stopped before Turn #8. He sat there for a short time then, as mentioned, continued. Many of us were appalled when we found out that wasn't going to be another one! There was a mixture of the V8 Supercars not wanting the event to continue and South Australian Government miss handling of it too. I believe Don Panoz got so pissed off with all of it he withdrew any chance of it happening again. He also withdrew building a factory in Adelaide building Panoz sports cars. Very disappointing for a lot of people.
I know right. They just had to make it a 1000km race. Which come to think of it is kinda funny since a bunch of americans mainly organized it. And they're used to miles.
Went to this one with seats on pit straight. Got horrendous sunburn but enjoyed it and was chuffed to see international racing back on the Grand Prix circuit. INXS played the after race concert too!
I drove all the way from Melbourne in my WRX with some friends to watch this excellent event. I remember Dick Barbour got quite the reception on the podium...
Stijn. I loved this little footnote in great raccing history, and as an Austrlian I didn't aactually know about this event. I turned 12 in the year 2000. and didn't get into racing until I was 14, and was hard into WRC. looking at greats like Tommi, and Colin McRae. anyway. I believe that the Australian manufaturers were too proud about their machinery to share the trackks wirth the FIA nd all that cme with that. litttle did they knoow that within decade their manufacturing would sadly disolve into Germany, and the USA, and Asia. a very sad outcome from one of the most can do people, because of govenment regulations, and misalignment of peoples wishes. anyway. the Bathurst 12hr became something beauiful, out of the chrisalis of ustralian motor racing. i just wish we got more excited about other things tooo,. like we have a cool drift league. check that out. and drag racing. and burn outs...summernats will blow your mind.
Except they didn't bribe the libs enough in 2020 to keep the race on the street circuit... I guess OTR has more money (and probably offered them cheap fuel)
Which is interesting to consider, when they went on to run their own international events in New Zealand, China, Bahrain and a support gig at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix one year -- and also organise the Bathurst 12-Hour these days.
Good video, i didnt know about this race so it was very cool to learn about it 👍 But i didnt understand one thing: Why did the Audi only drove 25 laps to become champion? Were there extra points on offer for that?
It was something like that. To be honest i dont quite understand it myself. It was a pretty complicated system and most of the drivers didnt even like it
I read it was economy, that scuddled the plans for a Asia Le Mans series.. venues were concerned that it wouldn't produce enough audience Edit*- Which is rubbish, if you ask me. It would maybe not at the first season, but as it picks up popularity it becomes viable
I was there 19 years old, one of the prototypes had a yamaha f1 engine, first time I had heard an f1 engine live, best sound of all the cars. Bob Wollack was there in the Porsche also, RIP… also bumped into Boof (Darren Lehman the australian cricketer) at the entry gate.
'The Race of a 1000 Yawns' - Awful race on TV and one I feel bad for anyone that actually paid admission. The series was well decided by that point and this was effectively a 6 hour demonstration run as the "LMS" brand tried to expand into both Europe and Asia/Pacific with steadily dwindling car counts and variety. Take off the rose coloured glasses and you will see that this race was really an early sign of endemic problems in the series and in many ways the beginning of the end.
Awful comment Go spread your misery else where I was there What an Awesome night!! No rose coloured glasses Only flame coloured Glowing disc coloured Sparks coloured Or just in plain ‘ol spectacular’ coloured lenses Booooooooo to youuuuuu
What a lot of bullshit. It was held on Dec 31, the weather was hot and the event itself was excellent. LMS did not have a future, but the event was brilliant, it was a great night.
what a load of shite, were you even there??? i was there. it was huge and an awesome evening. it did pull bigger crowds than v8supertaxis would, though nothing has beaten the final grand prix.

all I can think of is "Real Racing Roots '99" from Ridge Racer R4 - a racing finale taking place on new year's eve
It's really a shame that the concept of racing through New Year's Eve has never been visited again yet even until today.
seriously dude i was so disappointed to hear they cut the race short, especially since this wont be able to happen again for another 1000 years.
Setting up the Adelaide circuit blocks easy access to atleast 10 pubs, this idea would never fly again

If I remember they blamed cancellation due to reallocation of funds to give nurses an increase in pay….0
"The Race of 1000 Years" really is a perfect name for the final race of the millenia, and what a way to go!

Well, the Emperio Endurance here in Brazil technically there is still them, with the F1 Halo, if you consider this a problem
I went to the 1990 Adelaide F1 GP. It was a fantastic track.
06:22 And a different millenium
I remember watching it on TV. I think me and about 3 other people must have been the most boring people at the party.

ALMS was by far the best Sportscar racing there ever was. Nothing comes close to the quality of the races.
No truer words spoken
Quality of race itself Super GT has always been better (and still is). The old protos in ALMS tho, they were freaking cool
I was there for the whole event. Had a supergold pass right in front of the pits. Great fun.
Now you made me Jealous
This channel deserves way more subs!! I really like your video's, keep them coming! 😃
Thanks! Will do!
_Another excellent video ... well done._
It's a great shame that this race / series didn't continue in Adelaide. 🏁
I got to say, really enjoy your content man, the video production is superb and this is truly a sweet spot of sports car racing for me, thanks again!
I was there. The atmosphere was amazing and while the racing was not the best I’ve seen at that track it was still genuinely entertaining.
Here here, absolutely agree, what a spectacular night!!
Me too, a great night. Weather was hot and it was New Years Eve. Fantastic event with the lights on.

Thanks for another great video.
Wondering why they didn’t go for the one race across two centuries mark. Was it some city constraint?
The ending is so incredibly predictable of Supercars, they still do this to this day.
Except they didn't bribe the libs enough in 2020 to keep the race on the street circuit... I guess OTR has more money (and probably offered them cheap fuel)

Minimum driving distance to receive any points. And those were enough.
Nice video, also I kept swearing in your videos that I was hearing Ace Combat music, I scrolled down your posted videos and low and behold
Thanks! And yeah i'm a massive ace combat fanboi so prepare to hear more briefing/menu/hangar themes in the future.

Only the sanctioning body existed before the ALMS. The IMSA series only exits because of the ALMS.
