Ben, You are so right about not worrying about washing sponges in tap. Canisters should only house sponges like you did (Course, Medium, fine) If there's a deep substrate bed you're golden(Plenty of B.B. area). If One is concerned about sponges, their tank isn't set up right.

it runs perfect and has never leaked .

You get a lot for your money. I’m not sure if they make the 704-b anymore.

Hey Ben, "PRO TIP" remove the o ring, wrap the channel it sits in with Teflon tape 2 or 3 times, Vaseline up the O ring and reinstall. This has worked for me since SunSun's hit the market.

    I feel you Ben!
I had my EF150 (small sunsun from All pond solutions in the UK) start leaking this week. A few days of thinking it was the o-ring was frustrating me! And the leak persisted.
Last night I took apart the entire filter, pump and valves and all. I took the lid apart and turns our a concealed o-ring has shifted letting water in behind the lid section... dried it and put it back together and the leak has stopped!

I love that watchdog alarm, that’s a great idea. I used totes for my cannister filter so I’m glad I’m not the only one that had that idea. Glad it was just the O ring for you! Thanks for sharing 😁👍

That was a great video. Extremely informative and I bet many folks will not copy that procedure and have much safer aquariums. :)

I once had a valve on the hosing leak, I managed to damage the o-ring. I made a temporary fix with vaseline on it but eventually bought a replacement valve. Hope it stays fixed Ben, odd how these things can leak but I've been using these filters for years and that is the only time it has happened.

I have a used canister 303B, knock on wood, and have been running strong for 2 years now. I love it. Also, thanks for sharing the type of O'ring lubricant you use. Great upload!

Filter order, coarse then fine pads This protects media from channel clogging. Then the medias. Sure add a polisher like Sera, but I reckon if used last will only reduce flow and not additionally prrotect media from blockage.
Yep, agree on tubs for filters and alarms are a must. You can also get Tuya WiFi alarms to hit you up on a phone if you are not home and get a leak.

I'd take that 7 years and call it a win. I've had two sunsuns back in the mid to late 2000s, and neither one of them lasted a year before they started to leak. Always after being turned off whether intentionally or due to a power outage. I gave them both away and bought an FX5. It would be my luck that it was just the oring 😂

Ben, do you turn your filtration off when feeding? I just added my first canister to my 75 gallon. I use WIFI-controlled outlets so its easy for me to turn off my air pumps and HOBs during feeding, is it ok to do the same with a canister filter or would the off for 20 min for feeding (or important phone calls) cause internal canister problems? Thanks LOVE your channel.

People hate on the marineland maniflow filters but they're true to the gallon amount in the write up with all the filter Media in it. The 530 is better than tye fx6. Thw complaint is the leaking like what you're talking about here. Vaseline with every maintenance and wraoped in plumbers tape (3 times) fixes leak issue with mangniflow.

I got to be honest, i hate the Sunsun canisters, you get what you pay for and where water etc is involved id rather pay a bit more for a well made known one.
I actually do not run any canisters at all these days.

I have my filter connected via one of those app controlled electrical switches, so I like from time to time to just unpower the filter to check for any leakage. With the app I don’t have to hunt for the power plug and can do the check up from my sofa. Heard too many scary stories about ruined floors when filters malfunction and dump the entire tank of water on the floor. The watch dog that you have is excellent, but there must be someone in the house when the alarm goes on or it won’t help you much. Unfortunately even the electronic water detectors that can send you a message if the alarm is triggered are relying on internet connection working which may not happen during blackout.

My sunsun 3000 failed in service after only 8 months causing severe damage to the cabinet and ceiling below. I suspect its not uncommon, and I'm about to seek assistance from amazon to get a refund fro "finedt-filters". Lesson learned though, ALWAYS fit external filters in a tub with a flood alarm!

Fortunately I haven't experienced that kind of major leak with a canister but I have had small slow leaks that would have created damage if the canister wasn't in a big rubbermaid container.
