The 'Classic' range of filters from Eheim have stood the test of time and are still available in a form which alters very little from the original Eheim Classic filters of decades ago.
In this video I used Biogravel in 300g mesh bags and it took 8 of them to fill the filter.
Total weight of media was 2.4 kg / 5.28 lb making the filter suitable for a normally stocked tank of around 240 litres / 63 US gal. for a full cycle.
If the tank was heavily stocked those figures could be halved.

The following videos will be useful for learning more about filtration and filter media:

    Bacteria and filter media: goo.gl/123gAF
How to clean an aquarium: goo.gl/bPMhvh
Aquarium tips / filtration playlist: goo.gl/pXgqVj
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome filter media does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
    (1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
    (1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
    Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
    Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Remember to use a water conditioner which does not bind / detoxify ammonia, nitrite or nitrate as that type of conditioner will severely limit bacteria numbers by starving the bacteria of 'food'.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium.
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:

IMHO Eheim Classic are the best canister filters you can buy, I have tried many canister filters Eheim, Oase and JBL but I always come back to Classic. I find that the open media structure of a Classic filter works, if not better, at least as good as all the fancy trays, they are simple very reliable and reasonably priced.

The eheim have better pumps than most on the market for this classic 350 the pumps rated at only 620littres per hour no matter what a pumps rated value is it'll be half of that by time it gets back to the tank but the eheim rates are with the media included there pumps will pump out about 66% two thrids of there rated flow instead of the 50% of most others the motors/pumps last a lot longer I heard a person say they ran a classic filter with media on a salt water tank for 5years non stop with out cleaning it just to see how long it'd take to clogg and burn its self out 5years on a salt water tank without cleaning just proves how good there pumps really are the higher the head the more it'll pump of its rated flow there's no by pass from them there near silent to run use very few electric the orings are probely the best ull get I once forgot to lock the motor on a classic 250 and ran it and it wouidnt leak that'll be due to a tight fit and the low flow. The reason eheim flow rates are a bit low on these are because eheim have been testing the bacteria contact time dwell time on the media and the lower flow is ment to help the bacteria do its job better or faster I had a classic 2213(250)i got 390lph at 1meter head with media and throw an eheim reflex uvc unit. There simple filters but can be pimped any way you like ur better to get a few dividers and put the media in bags Easter to clean the classic 600 is a bigger model holds alot more media and puts out 1000littres per hour at 2.3meaters head its ment to do 790lttres per hour with media and at say a meter head, only thing that's missing with a filter like this is a primer button but there's ways to prime it with out sucking on hoses, sorry this is a rant now but I like to put this information out there to help others iv got a eheim pro4+250 it's been running over 5year and has never missed a beat no issues at toll it has a primer but the water level in tank has to be high befor it'll work its also near silent and it puts out 630lph of the rated 950 without a spray bar or 600 with spray bar at a meter the trays fit together perfectly on my one and best of all it only uses 12watts.

lol, I've been saying that for years because it is true.
Everything today seems to be messed up because of science messing about with Nature.
I had the misfortune to waste 3 years at university doing an environmental degree and every single thing they were trying to brainwash students with was nonsense. That was over 20 years ago and it's getting worse - just look at the "Trust the science" mantra from the last couple of years and where that has got us - an economic collapse, rampant mental illness and an impending (planned) food chain collapse.
I really am genuinely disappointed by the state of science now as it has been sold to the highest bidder instead of being a discipline which was only concerned with the truth, the quest for knowledge and a greater understanding of the World.

Isn´t there a risk of the fine filter media getting clogged underneath the biological media? (That is why Eheim puts it on top, to make it easier to replace) Got that same filter, but still "Made in W. Germany" ^^

    • @ThousandYardStare

It will get clogged no matter where it is but the coarse and medium pad will take the brunt of the muck. Keeping the media operating in clean water becomes more important the more porous it is.

could I get away with just 1 kg of this media and the rest all sponge?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Probably yes but there are a nation of different cichlids from 2" - 12" long. There's capacity in the filter to add more media if you find that you need to and as long as you're not using a conditioner which starves the bacteria (e.g. prime) it should be fine.

@@MakoyUnggoy It's a very good media for traditional koi filters which get very dirty. The alfagrog works great in muck since the vast majority of the surface area is external.
It's reasonably effective in aquarium filters but only supports aerobic bacteria in normal flow rates.

Sorry, have to disagree with the comments about water conditioners. SEACHEM PRIME just cannot be beaten. It temporarily binds Nitrates and will absolutely save your fish in an emergency. It does NOT starve beneficial bacterias.

Unfortunately the thousands of reports from people who have struggled to achieve even half a cycle let alone a full cycle would disagree with that statement. The prime absolutely stalls the system by starving the bacteria since when it is replaced by a normal dechlorinator the cycle completes. It can't be a coincidence in close to 100% of cases. Just look at the forums littered with people struggling to establish an aerobic cycle after 7-8 weeks while using that product. It's ridiculous.
In my view it is a Trojan horse to get hapless customers to buy more products (to 'treat' the obvious side effects of prime) and it is part of a pharmaceutical business template which I quite frankly find disgusting.
Aside from that it does do what it claims with regard to dechlorinating the water - The problems are the side effects which are not admitted to since that would negate the 'need' for the likes of Stability and other 'treatments' which is the reprehensible part of the business template.
I am always a fan of treating the root cause of a problem, not the symptoms but I appreciate that some businesses and individuals take a different view.
I suppose it comes down to Germ Theory versus Terrain Theory........yup, most people have never heard of Terrain Theory and that's where the problems begin.

@@pondguru Right or wrong I don't know, but have heard this argument before. What would you substitute the Prime with, for tap water which is high in Chloramines?

    • @pondguru

@@thanilethersich4219 Any normal dechlorinator e.g. API Stress Coat which will simply make the water safe and not fart about with the food bacteria needs.
It really bugs me to see so many people conned into using a nation of products to make the water 'right' when it only takes the tank being set up properly and a simple dechlorinator to make it so easy to keep things right.
I'm planning to do a video on Germ Theory vs Terrain Theory and that will hopefully explain lots of stuff...and may get my channel banned from TH-cam since they have algorithms in place to destroy anything useful, lol

Absolutely worst filter I've ever owned .I've had 2 classic 350 in the past very quiet and reliable, and as you would expect from Eheim of old. I decided recently ,in the last month, to returned to the brand the 2217 classic 600. They arent the same these days ,cheap quality plastic pump housings and impeller balance and shafts, resulting (in my opinion ) poor acoustic and vibration issues. In fact the retailer's advice was to place a brick on the top .Eheim quality build has went backwards.

      @pondguru  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, it's good to hear that someone else agrees that Eheim have fallen from where they used to be. What they're churning out now is nowhere near as good as their older ranges.

@@pondguru unfortunately I paid £££ to find this to be the case.....I've what could be regarded as a lower league Aqua One Aquis filter at half the price, came with media ,it's better in every respect for half the price. Eheim are charging the same big prices for poorer quality sadly ..... Richard your channel is the best for, not only your top quality set up advice ,but it's very useful for those in the hobbie (even me of 30years experience) to have and share experiences. @@mediscusnut7994 The Aqua One Aquis 1250 is one I recommend to people to a daily basis as it is just a solid, well made filter which holds plenty of media (4kg Biohome Ultimate in the top 2 trays) and it is so much better than the majority of the so-called 'advanced' filters which are produced today. Just because something is popular doesn't mean that it is good and that extends to aquarium treatments too. The most popular dechlorinator all round the world is responsible for starving bacteria and causing all manner or problems for the filtration system which can be 'solved' by the end user buying more 'treatments' to mask the side effects caused by the initial 'treatment'- It's damn frustrating and ultimately it s a failure of education.
The vast majority of fish-keepers keep their fish in conditions which are not natural which cause them to end up spending unnecessary money on 'treatments' to keep the test results 'right'.
For example, an African cichild tank should be easy to maintain if it is set up using calcareous rock and coral sand which will release the necessary minerals and 'hardness' into the water. That negates the 'need' for added treatments and anything 'needed' to maintain the right pH / hardness.
In a similar way anyone keeping discus simply needs to use river sand, bogwood and suitable plants to keep the conditions right for the fish.
The lack of understanding of the natural environment is criminal but it is understandable since all we are taught Germ Theory. If we were also taught Terrain Theory then there would be some understanding as to what affects the fish, why we often don't need a pharmaceutical template to run a successful tank.
