He likes both cats and dogs huh? That's pretty open minded for a kid. The child characters in this game are really interesting and realistic I think. Many of them are orphans and had to grow up too fast. But they still have their juvenile sides with make believe and strange cruel games that adults can't understand. I never understood if Notkin's half is a cat or a dog. People seem to think it's a cat. If you look at his character model you can see he has plenty of scratches and scars on his hands probably from cats. Maybe he actually has a real pet. Or did he get them from chasing cats while pretending he's a dog? Hm. He's wearing a dog leash on his own neck which makes me think his half is part of his own body. The only real pet I saw him have is that jerboa in the cage at the end of the game. There's one quote here that is also in Bad Grief's lines. I don't know if they both say them in game. I think Notkin could easily turn into someone like Grief in the future. Gang of kids who take justice into their own hands. Grief's gang of criminals is the adult equivalent maybe.
his half is a grey cat named Jester (source: the gamepedia & the game's design documents) it's never explained how their halves are real but they are, it's why you can hear animal noises in their base and well see those scratched hands but indeed can happen somewhere else, I assume the working is that because only the half of the animal's soul is shared with a kid that that's how you could have them around but invisible... it's not too logical but that's kinda how the whole game is isn't it? the Polyhedron also just floats because it can (another guess I have is that the devs would've loved to have added all animals but it's quite a lot of work to add lotsa animals in the base and it didn't work as a very last addition either and well the mystic idea of it fits) fun fact: in the first game Jester's name was Artist

Notkin has the same speaking patterns as grief. Some lines of their dialogue also overlap.
