  • This ice cold, bourbon forward, classic Mint Julep is the only one you need when the bugle sounds at this years Kentucky Derby!
    **********************************
    While the Mint Julep is a very old, classic drink, going back to the beginning of the 1800's, the term "Julep" is downright ancient dating back to about 600 AD. It was a word that essentially meant "Medicine", much like "Tonic" but there's obviously no medicine in the Mint Julep (or any julep for that matter) so what gives? Well, ancient people (And even not so ancient people) had a funny idea of what "Medicine" entailed and at least when possible it involved booze. The modern Julep of course was never intended as a curative, the name it seems is something of a joke. Similar to when my Grandmother would request her "Nerve Medicine" or her "Tonic" what she meant was "My bottle of blackberry brandy, no glass please".
    The Mint Julep itself has a long history and has seen much evolution in it's standard preparation. Brandy, Cognac, Rye, Bourbon, even Rum have all been featured in it's silver beaker. Syrup or sugar, and which sugar? Bitters? Of course yes, all of these have at various times been considered standards in the Mint Julep. For what it's worth I prefer Bourbon in mine, made with a bit of demerara syrup and some bitters, and plenty of mint.
    Like any drink with so much history, the Mint Julep has found itself regarded as a matter of religion among it's devotees. Many insist that you must not muddle the mint, or on the number of mint leaves to be utilized, on the amount of time the drink must rest, on the quality of ice, etc. Much like the Old Fashioned, a great many people have some very strong ideas about how it must be made.
    Personally, I don't have time for that. I like my mint muddled here because I was the drink to be quite minty, but if you prefer not, that's no skin off my nose. The only things of true importance in my opinion here are that liqour, copious ice, and great quantities of mint are involved. My preparation is as follows:
    Mint Julep
    ~.5 oz. or ~ 15 ml. Simple Syrup
    2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
    A plethora of mint leaves
    3 oz. or 90 ml. Bourbon
    Muddle it
    Fill beaker partway with crushed ice
    Swizzle it
    Top it up with ice
    add a bouquet of several sprigs of mint
    Enjoy.

      Between us... I JUST shot a Pearl Diver, but it's got nothing to do with Django. That's a really fun anachronism in that movie, but the drink he orders wouldn't exist until the 40's/50's. I think it was done intentionally to show how elaborate Golden Age drinks were, and someday maybe I'll do a variation based on Django.

    Best tip I ever got on mint juleps was to discard the mint you've muddled before adding ice. Once crushed, mint will produce that minty oil that you can spread around the inside of the glass, but if the crushed mint sits in the drink too long, the alcohol will break it down and get chlorophyll into your drink, which is unpleasantly bitter.

    • @mr.angryman3599

      what does too long mean? 5 minutes?

    • @InfernalBanana
      @InfernalBanana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      MR. ANGRYMAN It’s really more a matter of whether you just pressed the leaves with your muddler or if you crushed and ground them. You ideally just want to get the oils out without crushing the thing you’re muddling, and the chlorophyll gets released more because the mint was over muddled. Yes, the leaves will leech out some chlorophyll regardless, but I’ve had the occasional mojito and you can pretty much instantly tell if the mint was over muddled- it has a lingering bitter flavor, especially on the aftertaste.

      @InfernalBanana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Drops2cents exactly. With mint, and I’ve also seen recipes that use muddled peppers like serranos or jalapeños, you just want to barely press them to get only the oils. Any crushing or grinding, and you’re gonna have a bad day.

    Dilution is such a commonly overlooked feature it's pretty amazing. Ever since I've started mixing I've been adding splashes of chilled filtered water into almost all drinks because it skips the time it takes for the ice to melt and get the drink to that perfect concentration of alcohol/water. Man, slow motion works magic for these kind of videos. It's like the anime food effect.

    THE SUN SHINES BRIGHT ON MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME...
    Thank you, Greg, for showing the world how to make a good julep, because the ones at Churchill Downs are, historically, trash. Kinda varies from year to year, but it's a pretty common gag with the local news in Louisville to ask people to try their first julep and see their reactions. I'd never heard the bit about adding the rum, but that sounds like a downright delicious idea.

    Wow, the number of song references in the on-screen notations on this one!

    Uncanny. I literally just ordered a julep-themed package from my monthly Bespoke Post subscription yesterday after a couple months of waffling on that particular option. Then, lo and behold, you drop the new episode for mint juleps. You're doing god's work. Not the god you're always hearing about, but the drunker, more fun one.

      > Not the god you're always hearing about, but the drunker, more fun one.
      Well, the ancient Greeks had Dyonisos, the Romans had Bacchus, and the Durch have that mythical king named Gamrinus who allegedly invented the noble art of brewing.
      Too much coincidences, I'd say. :-)

    I Love mint juleps!! Only difference is I don't use bitters, and use 1 oz simple syrup and 2.5 oz bourbon, but I use a cask strength (Booker's to be precise). It's The only reason I tolerate summer. Also you have to use a plastic straw so when you cut it to size for the julep cup you can use the other half for...uh....personal use.

    I just improvised my idea of a Mint Julep as the October just arrived and I had all this mint on hand. I live in Ontario, Canada. Sorry for the metric and imperial mash, but 500ml of Buillet and 125ml of simple syrup that I let sit with a tea cage full of 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint leaves and left in the fridge for two hours. I also kept poking at it and "basting" the tea bulb every so often during the process. This seems great chilled on its own or poured on the rocks or ever snow cone. ;)

    1 egg white, 1oz Mellow Corn + 1oz Crown Royal (Original) in blender, add 2oz coffee syrup, 2oz whole milk + equal parts in volume in fancy ice, blend for 4 pulses and pour into your favorite glass or mug and garnish with whatever you want. I call it "The Maine State Slammer" and it tastes amazing and is addictive and demands attention. It is a better replacement for a white russian. :)
