Here in Mexico in my youth we used to make it with slightly different proportions:
One can of cream of coconut
One liter box of pineapple juice
One bottle (750-1000 ml) of whatever rum you could steal from your parents
Half a bag of ice from the convenience store (slam the bag against the floor a few times to crush the ice)
    Preparation:
Dump everything into a (hopefully clean) ice cooler, serve in red plastic glasses

We make these every year for my mom's birthday (in February) because she lived and worked in the Caribbean (St. Thomas, St. John, Virgin Gorda, etc.) for years and that's where she met my dad. We live in Florida now, but have visited friends and family down there before, and I think it will always be where my mom is happiest.
Another favorite of ours, which can be hard to find up in the states, is the bushwhacker. You can find it at a lot of parties, and it has similar ingredients to the pina colada.

My recipe: (huge hit with everybody); 2 oz Coconut MILK, 2 oz pineapple juice, 2 oz white rum (Bacardi is great), .5 oz simple syrup, .5 oz lime juice. Tons of ice, usually just add until the texture is right, topping with 151 is welcome too because it helps as the ice melts.

You should try my version, trade out the creme of coconut for full fat canned coconut (or coconut creme!) and most of the ice for frozen pineapple chunks, and a squeeze of lime. I find the canned coconut milk gives a much better coconut flavor, more richness and doesn't taste artificial, the extra frozen pineapple gives the sweetness you lost from the sugared up creme of coconut in addition to amping up the pineapple flavor and you get to skip that "canned" flavor from the canned pineapple juice and the bit of lime brightens the whole thing and provides some balance to the fat and sweet.
This could be your "upscaled" version

@@nickelchlorine2753 Well sir/madam/undefined plankton, seeing as how Spanish has both "ananas" (there's an accent in there somewhere) and "pina", I'd say that, more than likely, the latter is a loanword of sorts from English! Your etymology lesson of the day!

Plus the first pineapple in europe came when spain discovered America, so it makes more sense that it is the other way round.

Ah Greg thank you for finally doing one of my favorite drinks and tbh my first *virgin* drink. I loved the virgin version when I was 12 and I’ll always love the actual version now. Not a kids drink? I had em when I was a kid, excluding the rum which as an adult I found isn’t really present anyway. Also I love that this pops up in my feed when I’m browsing TH-cam hungover from a night of drinking pina colodas
