  • Today I tackle the Long Island Iced Tea, or maybe it tackles me?
    **********************************
This week I tackle the legendary Long Island Iced Tea! Created in the 70's by bartender Bob "Rosebud" Butt for a cocktail contest hosted by Oak Beach Inn. The version I'm presenting here is slightly rebalanced by Jeffrey Morgenthaler but goes down just as easy as the original. And that's kinda of the point with this drink, it's a basically unoffensive way to put a lot of high proof spirits passed your lips.
    Long Island Iced Tea
.75 oz. or 22 ml. Lemon JUice
.5 oz. or 15 ml. gin
.5 oz. or 15 ml. rum
.5 oz. or 15 ml. tequila
.5 oz. or 15 ml. vodka
.5 oz. or 15 ml. Dry Curaçao / triple sec
.25 oz. or 8 ml. simple syrup
    shake & pour
.75 oz. or 22 ml. Coca Cola
    Garnish with lemon twist

When I was in my early 20's, me and my buddies decided we wanted to do a "Long Island Night". We didn't want to keep mixing them over and over, though, so instead we poured one bottle of each type of alcohol and two 2-liters of Coke into one of those Gatorade coolers with the spigot, dumped in a bag of ice and stirred it. None of us remember much after that.

Another easy way to remember it is that The Clears(Your liquors used are all clear, duh) are what make the base of your "tea", and you change it up by altering what you put in for your mixers. For example, a Raspberry Tea replaces the Triple Sec with Chambord and the Coke with 7-Up, a Melona Ice Cream Tea swaps for Midori and cream, and so on and so forth.

When I used to drink a ton I had some friends that'd occasionally drink with me, and anytime I was making actual cocktails like cosmopolitans or madras (two specific situations that come to mind first lol), I'd have to warn everyone to drink slowly, and sometimes they'd forget or ignore me, and they always ended their night in one drink when they did. I don't make gross drinks is the problem. They taste good and the alcohol is hidden well. I like ice cold liquor and shaking my drinks. You wouldn't believe how much of a glass can be alcohol and it be almost unnoticeable.

I stayed away from LIITs for years because at first I thought they had actual tea in them (I don't like tea), and then I found out while they did not have tea, they do contain gin, which I also do not like. I was blitzed up enough last Christmas to finally try one and was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty damn good. Good enough that I had three of them, and that promptly finished off my night. I have also tried a Long Island Limoncello, which is very tasty indeed.

I finally did it during my first night out during my first job right out of college, and I bought a whole pitcher full of it.
And I drank it all, and with some beers to go with it.
After the party, my workmates needed to call me an Uber and write down my address on a piece of paper. I still managed to get off of my Uber to buy a 2-piece chicken meal from McDonald's, called my ex, and woke up 12 hours later.

I just made a pair of these, one for myself and one for the missus, with one difference: I didn't have any lemon left, so I used lime juice. It seemed to add a little spiciness and freshness to the taste, but worked beautifully. Of course, I also made a double batch, from lower-shelf boozes that I had on hand, so it probably wasn't quite as tasty as the one you had. I did substitute Italian orangio for the Triple Sec, and it added a pleasing, almost herbal note to it for some reason.
But the truth is in the title: This is one dangerous drink. Even halved like this, it's still a double-shot of high-proof spirits, and it just doesn't taste like it was made of five boozes, or any booze at all. Tasty and easy sippin', when you really just want that one drink to round out your entire evening, or want to get buzzed quite rapidly.

My college economics professor brought one of these to class with him every day of the semester, and finished it before the bell each time. He also used beer to explain, in a thick Iranian accent, supply and demand curves:
Over here you have the cheap beer, the Coors. And over here you have the good beer, the Heineken. If the overall price goes up, most people will buy the Coors. But some people will say, "I don't like the Coors, I want the Heineken, if the price goes up _I don't give a damn!"_
Needless to say with his examples, enthusiasm, and love for Long Islands and bacon (he would share the bacon with those who gave correct answers), nearly everyone in that class received an A.

This one time at band camp... (Not really.) I __remember__ drinking five... I remember, after throwing up in the bathroom, thanking the bartender/owner for letting me throw up in their bathroom...
I still get reminded of this every now and then.

I always preferred to float the alcohol on the cola for a Long Island.
Daft really though, as it's a little more difficult and most customers don't really care.
    Also.
I recently ran out of ice and threw a few highball glasses in the freezer with a little water in the bottom.
This led me to a cool discovery. The ice freezes to the bottom of the glass.
When you put a drink in there, after a little while the ice detaches from the glass and rises to the top.
I havn't done anything with it yet, but definitely gonna make a black cocktail for this and call it a Moonrise. 😁🌜

I love how everyone thinks this drink is super strong when actually it contains as much alcohol as any other long drink: 2oz. It's pure suggestion.

Usually it contains about 2.5-3.5 oz actually making it technically illegal to serve in restaurants in parts of the USA

yeah but it hides the alcohol well and you drink more of them

Keep in mind that there's a big difference between 2oz of something like 50 proof amaretto, and a 110 proof tequila. Considering that a lot of bars take the reputation of the LIT as a mind-eraser and decide to make it with overproof alcohols like Bacardi 151, it's a very fair assessment that the smooth and easy-to-drink Long Island will wreck your face faster than sitting around sipping 2oz glasses of scotch. Add to the fact that people can't usually "taste the alcohol" in this and don't quite know how they're made, inexperienced drinkers can go from zero to "vomiting in a dirty bathroom stall" surprisingly quickly, because they don't realize that this is a strong drink.

I absolutely love these. When asked to describe it I just say its a little bit of everything with some cola and lemon juice. A couple of them and you'll be enjoyably boozed but you wont feel like a drunk high schooler burning the hell out of every drink you make

My Boy! That final pull on that drink was my kinda pull... I've killed glasses like that in one long pull when they're made right.
Thankfully those days are a couple decades back, in my 20's... but thanks for the reminder!

The best Long Island iced tea I ever had was prepared by a bartender who had not made one before and so he followed the recipe exactly.
It was only an 8 oz drink and it tasted non-alcoholic and before I finished it I was buzzing like a cheap speaker.

I love Long Island iced tea. Most I've ever drank was 2 mason jar LIITs. Started feeling it and decided that was enough. One day I'll try three and go for drunk.

Holy Crap - was talking about Long Islands with the parents at the dinner table 2 days ago, my dad has never had one, I described it as tasting like the old 4C iced tea, 2 days later this video pops up for me, and you called it on the 4C!!! Had my first LI probably around 1982 or so (yes we're from there) and that's what I remember. Trippy - you NAILED it. Thirsty all of a sudden!
