you read my mind barkeep :-)
Greg! You've gotta try this recipe, bud!
1.5oz casamigos reposado (I chose casamigos because it's a very sweet highland tequila with a lot of vanilla and caramel notes)
0.5oz rye whiskey (I chose woodford rye, just a personal preference. Whistle pig 10yr also works great)
2 dashes fee brothers chocolate bitters
1 dash fee brothers cardamom bitters
1 dash fee brother black walnut bitters
1 dash angostura bitters
1 dash regans orange bitters
0.5oz agave nectar
Torch a cinnamon stick, and cover the smoke with the glass while you build the cocktail in a yarai glass
Garnish with orange swath and the torched cinnamon stick.
I dont have a name for this, but I guarantee you'll love it Greg! No need for an episode on it, I just wanted to share a great cocktail recipe with you :)
They all lacked luxardo cherries. When are you going to show us how to make those at home.
Love the tequila old fashioned. I make a margarita old fashioned by making a lime, orange, salt, and grapefruit simple syrup and building off of that. Typically with a Blanco tequila and Ango..... Mouthwatering ;)
Tobago : Pronounced Tuh - Bay - Go
An angostura partnership?? Wow, nice job Greg!
That's a big word
@@mordonsmirkdon209 thats literally the name of the company.
I approve of Old Fashioned Week being longer than an actual week.
Amen to that!
It includes the days of crippling hangovers after drinking a weeks worth of old fashioneds
a loooong week full of days off, if I might add....
I absolutely love the editing of the tasting notes to be behind your head! Small detail but absolutely delightful 😄
Ethan Scaife Did you notice how it was in front of his hand lol. Probably difficult to edit that since the hand moves so much faster.
I was thinking the exact same thing! Took me by surprise at first lol
@@Neotenico I mean it was probably much more difficult to put behind his head since you can't just layer it over the existing video
Nice detail! Good production value!
I'm apparently in charge of cocktails for my girlfriend's Christmas party so now I have an excuse to watch every HtD video again. It's for study, right?
Good luck bud.. I use to make drinks for family Christmas parties and shit, but I always end up get'n too lit, so I'm no longer asked..
@medusa little Plus you don't need billions of different ingredients.
And with cocktails for a party you can usually fit them quite well to the clientele and theme.
Girlfriends Christmas Party sounds like sweet/juicy drinks and maybe a christmassy drink.
Make the wench make the drinks. She’s obviously sexist as hell whenever it suits her.
If you're putting an Old Fashioned on your menu, I'll suggest a Kraken (or other high quality spiced rum) Old Fashioned. The spices pair great with the bitters and give a christmasy feel, at least for me, because of the cinnamon, clove and nutmeg.

try flaming the orange twist for the oaxaca old fashioned. it makes a big difference
I was introduced to old fashioneds in a Wisconsin supper club and the brandy variety will always be my favorite. They muddle granulated sugar with Angostura bitters and orange before adding the spirit and ice and I love the way the sugar doesn't completely dissolve, so you get the tiny crunch of sugar at the end. That, and brandy is one of the few distilled spirits I like.
I love rum and your recipe for your rum old fashion is better than substituting rum for whiskey in the typical old fashion. Thanks for the twist.
The muddler is beautiful! I'd say that's definitely olive wood. You've inspired me to make my own.
I support that idea.
Next project!!!
I cannot tell you how happy and validated i feel finding out that you and i make our rum old fashioneds so similarly.
No brandy old fashion? *Gasps in Wisconsinite*
Speaking of Wisconsin, if you find yourself in Door County Wisconsin, stop by Nelsen's Hall on Washington Island. Nelsen's Hall is the number one purveyor of Angustora Bitters because there is a tradition of selling shots of bitters. You can join the bitters club by visiting then and taking a shot of bitters. I did it a few years ago and the shot was pretty damn good.
Nelsen's Hall is Wisconsin's longest running bar due to the fact they sold shots of bitters during prohibition for medicinal purposes.
Never made it to Washington Island. I need to go.
I go up to Sturgeon Bay every year... I'll have to add this as one of my destinations.
@@bryansnow3690 Washington Island is other worldly. It's like going back in time. Nelsen's Hall is one of many places that feel that way. There's also a burger stand called The Albatross on Washington Island that's supposed to be great, but I haven't been... yet.
The Monarch Public House has it beat by a few years as the oldest/longest-running bar in Wisconsin, but they both seem like cool places to go. A Wisco Old-Fashioned is a thing of beauty.
Great one in MKE boon and crocket
I made a rum old-fashioned a couple weeks ago (using Cuban cane syrup and Cuban rum - because Canada - and lime) and I ALSO described it as "vacation in glass!"
This was great! The old fashioned is my all time favorite cocktail method. There’s a gin made down here in the Austin area that’s aged in whiskey barrels. It is a really fascinating, complex liquor. I had trouble figuring out what to do with it, but I recently found it works GREAT as a bourbon replacement in cocktails. Gave it a shot with the old fashioned. WOW. highly recommend.
Do you know the brand? Interested in looking into it, always looking for Texan distilleries
@@absidyabsidy2727 yes! The particular gin I’m speaking of here is Antique Barrel aged Gin from Waterloo distillery in Dripping Springs, TX. They also have a classic gin that is very good, as well.
I do a similar tequila based old fashioned. I use Ancho Reyes Liquor mezcal, reposado tequila, old fashioned bitters, chocolate bitters, and agave nectar for sweetness. It comes out quite smokey and the chocolate compliments it so well to add almost a bbq smoke flavour to the cocktail.
My go to old fashioned:
1.5oz bourbon
.5oz Grand Marnier
Maple syrup in place of simple
Orange bitters
I have a friend who found smoked maple syrup for his Old Fashioneds. A+++
Ok, I have got to try this!!! As much as I love me some ango, this sounds delicious
@@mommylap we need the name and location of that! Lol
I actually had a similar rum old fashion at my fav bar a few weeks ago. I just asked my bartender to surprise me with a rum drink.... it was amazing
I love learning new Old Fashioned recipes! I know we're just past pumpkin season, but a Brandy, Pumpkin and Angostura Old Fashioned is surprisingly addictive!
I just started to make Old Fashioned my go to drink since I can easily make it at home. I make mine as simple as possible, bitters with a sugar cube, a dash of OJ, bourbon or rye depending, and I top it off with some seltzer water. Many thanks for cluing me in on this wonderful idea to celebrate this wonderful beverage.
I started making them with crown royal peach, moonshine cherries and with a dash of the liquid. (in addition to the standard simple syrup, bitters, and orange)
sooooooo freaking good!
No Greg here's to you. I just want to say how much I appreciate having so much of a library to watch like I have you as like a podcast like your play on my TV while I you'll go about my day is lovely thank you
I’m a little late for Old Fashioned Week, but our menu has three Old Fashioned Variants! My fave is called the ‘New School’
Muddle lemon and cherry with Angostura Citrus Bitters and Sugar, 2 oz Bourbon, and then a Luxardo Cherry Liqueur and Angostura Aromatic Bitters float
I'm addict and don't drink but i can't help but watching your channel ;) I love it, keep up a good work.
I can’t get over how much I enjoy this channel, specifically spending my birthday morning, watching your videos as a treat to myself! Might make one of these for later tonight 🤙🏼
I love love love when you talk about the old fashioned. So much knowledge. It’s my favorite drink and your videos make it so much better.
Love the channel can’t get enough of these time tested drinks...would love to see a video of how you would set up and stock a new bar for the home.
Greg that pisco old fashioned is a great idea and now I have a drive to also make a Malört O.F.
I can tell Greg doesn't need an Angostura partnership to recommend them. The number of drinks I've seen him make with those... congrats!
Also love me some old fashioneds so definitely dig this episode!
Very glad that youre getting to partner with companies like Angostura
the first drink I ever watched you make was an Old Fashioned! Been a huge fan ever since! ❤️
Your channel introduced me to Glenn Crytzer and an uncontrollable urges to drink before I go to work. Luckily, I don’t work until four and own a bar and grill. Keep up the good work. I love the style, photography, and music of your channel!
My husband likes to order an old fashioned made with Jameson's Irish whiskey. Once in a while a bartender will argue with him about it. Your rum old fashioned reminds me of my favorite exotic drink, the Brazilian caipirinha. Rum agricole is very similar to cachaça, and the lime and syrup is like the lime and sugar in a caipirinha. So I'd drink one of your rum old fashioneds.
Old fashions are quickly becoming my favorite drink. A Brandy old fashioned sweet is amazing!
As someone who usually has there brandy neat, I can totally see it making an amazing OF
Elderflower liquer and bourbon make a great tasting old fashioned. Elder-Fashioned
Nathan Alley yes indeed! Love St. Germaine!
I made a variation once that was pretty tasty:
2-4 dashes orange bitters into a chilled rocks glass
1 Ice cube
Twist of orange peel
2 oz Scotch (I used Monkey Shoulder since that's what I had at the time, but smokier scotch tastes better)
Top off with apple juice
I call it the Sippy Cup.
Love the rum old fashion. Definitely am going to make one tonight
How to Drink posts a video before I've even had breakfast. Let the weekend begin!
Rule breaker here. I go with Chocolate Aztec bitters in my Mezcal Old Fashioned. It's amazing.
Do you also include a dash of freshly sacrificed human blood? Lol
I dare ya to try mole bitters in one
When I was taught Old Fashioneds, my teacher did the bitters and bourbon and garnishes and everything, but she used five ice cubes, one at a time, and fully dissolving the first four before adding the next, by stirring the drink. It took a good five minutes, but it tasted incredible, thanks to all the aeration. I've never actually seen it served like that anywhere since.
I'm supposing those must be those small ice-machine cubes. That be well less than 1 Gregg-sized cube.
That'd work well with cube or granulated sugar. It'd not be too cold all at once, and all the stirring would also disolve the sugar well.
Getting a good melt is important to drink balance (including aeration). I do ice, 1/2 cube and 1/2 coarse crushed, so it's just about covered by the ingredients. Then shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is frozen and about all I hear left is the remnants of the cubes rattling. When this is done with egg white for a sour things turn out wonderfully.
I’m still waiting for Wisconsin’s versions of the Old Fashioned! Nice variety though!
Got to love Brandy Old Fashion Sweet to live here
I’ve been waiting for it too! Hopefully it will make an appearance this week.
Okay no one else is saying it so I’m going to, THIS GUY KNOWS HIS WATCHES! I notice all his watches and don’t see the one in this video often! Love the timepieces man!
That rum old fashioned sounds extraordinary. That might just be because I love rum.
I want to do this rum old fashioned recipe. The addition of the lime sounds so delicious
I keep a bottle of orange bitters handy for times I get in a old fashioned mood and dont have oranges, works quite well in a pinch too.
I made this originally with simple syrup, because that’s what I had. It was OK, but not much to rave about. I just got some Demerara syrup. It completely changes the drink! I really like this!🥃🎉
1/2 oz simple
1/2 oz St Germain
2oz Bufflo Trace
2-3 dashes Angostura
Stir and express an orange peel
And there you have it, an elderflower old fashioned.
the rum old fashioned is just crazy good. thanks for your great work.
I love Angostura! Never knew the reason for the goofy label before today. Love the bits of history and lore included in these videos.
Love the old fashion it can be done so many different ways.
Well, this video got me to make my first drink from your recipe. Tried the rum Old Fashioned. Had to use Plantation 3 star since smith and Cross isn't available here. I was very happy. It was wonderful. I'll be trying more of your stuff in the future. And now I want to take a bartending class for fun.
I made the run ole fashioned and it was freakin great. The only thing I would change would be making it in a mixing glass then pouring over the rock in the glass. I made everything in the glass and near the end I was getting a lot of little lime pieces that I didn’t really love. I’ve found that this might be my new fav drink though!! Thanks, Greg!!
I've been doing a version of your rum old fashioned with Ron Zacapa 23 for a couple years and a homemade orange bitters for a couple years now and its hard to beat some good rum with lime! Love the video!
Next drink u should make is skooma
Originally the Skyrim skooma was smoked rather than drunk, but I'm in favor of this suggestion. Although I'm not a fan of tomatoes, they are a nightshade. Perhaps an earthly skooma beverage needs to start with a foundation of Cachaça (moon sugar) and tomato juice (nightshade)? Would absinthe work with that?
@@ChristopherOdegard What about adding smoke to the drink?
@@peshgirl That's brilliant. Obviously, that's for Greg to decide if he ever decides to go there, but for me it's a perfect idea. I wonder if it should be added as actual smoke, or whether it should include some mescal or islay whisky to bring smoke in to it. I like the way you think, Stephanie!
@@ChristopherOdegard Upon further reflection, oranges are a consumable food in Oblivion. I offer the suggestion that Greg make an Alton Brown smoker (can be made teeny tiny scaled down to fit in a NYC window) and smoke infuse a dried orange peel to use as a finishing garnish. We get an whole other Elder Scroll and can smoke our Skooma, too.
"This drink calls for 2oz of crystal meth"
the drops coming from the bitters bottle always looks super suggestive in slow motion
My two variations are: Old Irish and Old Mexican.
Old Irish: just use Irish whiskey, the rest of the recipe is regular.
Old Mexican: Bar spoon of lime juice, drop of agave syrup, small pinch of fine salt, dash of orange bitters, Tequila (I keep my tequila in the freezer so that ice isn’t needed).
I'm a simple rye old fashioned guy myself (with a bar spoon of maple syrup instead of simple syrup or sugar cube), but I think I have to try all of these. They sounds delightful.
Late to the party, but the rum old fashioned I've been meaning to make is 2oz of Appleton 12, a teaspoon of pimento dram, a teaspoon of 2:1 demerara (optionally gum) syrup, and a blend of bitters with at least Angostura and orange bitters in there, likely also chocolate bitters and possibly the smoked coffee bitters I've been meaning to make as well (for which I do not yet have a recipe as I need to experiment). Oh and optionally an absinthe rinse or a dash of it depending on how you want that in there. More of an "improved rum cocktail", I suppose.
Love the recipe ideas. I do a variation on the Oaxaca using cinnamon simple syrup instead of agave and Ancho Reyes chile liquor instead of mescal and it's absolutely delicious. Salud!
Just happened to buy a bottle of Angostura orange bitters along with a tiny absinthe bottle today, I already have an aromatic bitters in my bar cabinet. It really improves almost any drink. I sometimes even add it to non-alcoholic drinks as well just to add some bite.
I've been a bit hesitant to buy the orange bitters, because I often think that a lot of things with orange in it like orange chocolate; the orange becomes too dominant, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's a nice balanced fresh orange aroma and it's not so intense that it's hard to control.
(Btw I'm not payed to say this, I'm just a happy customer)
Congrats on the sponsor that must be so cool for you!
As your first Old Fashioned video is my favorite cocktail, and your history of old fashioned was so awesome, this is a complete win
"Arithmetic" and " Fashionably late spices" were my tasting notes of the week.
I'm going to see if I can come up with an absinthe old fashioned. Wish me luck.
Selling out in style. Gotta love it. You guys deserve all the sponsorship you can get.
Best Old Fashioned I've ever had was made with Plantation Pineapple Rum, brown sugar with Peychauds, and Orange Bitters, garnished with a dried slice of orange. Fan-bloody-tastic.
I love the way you make the orange peel "express," in the camera close-ups!!
Angostura will be happy to know I just bought those two today because of your videos... amusingly before watching this one.
Oaxacan old fashioned is a treasure that deserves the hype. Would love a deep dive on mezcal/mexican regional spirits.
You sir are a delight. This has helped my Saturday workday go by that much faster.
Also, watching you shave those ice cubes in slow motion is SUPER satisfying. LoL!!!
Not a whisky fan at all, so this new try with Pesco sounds delish! Thanks for making something delish! ....again! Wait... Rum. NOW we are talking!
That second drink with the rum looks phenomenal!! Thanks for sharing!
Rum OFs WIN! Try it if you haven't yet. 👍
Hi from Trinidad! Great video - on your Rum OF, we can tend to go pretty traditional with the ingredients, especially since we have wonderful King Oranges that pair so well with the Angostura Orange Bitters (I use 3 splashes of Bitter and 1-2 splashes of orange bitters). I would try the Angostura 1787 because of the Gros Michel afternotes, or a sweeter rum like El Dorado 15 yo from Guyana or the Angostura Single Barrel if you want to stay Trini! Keep 'em coming. Cheers.
You've inspired me Greg. Time to hit the journal to come up with a recipe!
My riff on an old fashioned- 2 oz Laird's Bonded 100% Apple Brandy, 3 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters, 1 fat teaspoon of homemade grenadine, stirred over ice and garnished with a lemon twist. I call it a Gnarly Old Jack. It's *like* an old fashioned, but objectively better in every way. Dare you to try it.
your love for these drinks and there history is very intoxicating..
Recently I've been drinking a weird version that morphed out of my love of tequila old fashioned. Espanita Añejo, angostura orange, & homemade lime simple syrup. I pour into a short glass and garnish with a lime round if I have company. Sometimes if I want it extra refreshing I'll add extra simple and top with club soda.
It usually comes out a little later than it should, but still delicious.
Going wild with the close up shots, absolutely glorious !!!
You're right about your rum old fashioned recipe btw-- it's exactly how we make ours at Cazabon Cocktail bar in Trinidad
I love that this drinks pretty much starts with a Tesseract. Well done.
Old fashioned week. A great excuse to load up! Thank you for your work.
Holy cow that rum old fashioned! Just made one with Appleton Rare and it is amazing, thank you for the recipe!
Made a rum old fashioned the other day with aged rum from Haiti and it was pretty good!

My rum old-fashioned, is two barspoons sugar and 3/4 quarters of a lime muddled, then three dashes of angostura, then add the ice cube and top with 2oz of 151, then stirred and garnished with orange peel
I'm to young to drink but I love watching these videos
Big fan of Old Fashioneds. Big fan of this surprise video to brighten up my Saturday. And I'll say it--your watch this video: I'm a fan.
I tried an old fashioned highball today, which is basically an OF but lengthened in a highball glass with club soda. Kinda interesting if you get tired of bourbon or scotch and soda only in the highball for summer.
The rum old fashioned made to the “T” smells like hot garbage, but so refreshing and amazing! Thank you sir!
I once did an Old Fashioned with just plain ole Costco Spiced Rum, Angostura bitters and a blood orange and it just did something that worked. I need to revisit it and really try and improve it but something with the spiced rum and blood orange really worked. I need to mad scientist this idea for a bit. Yeah Blood Oranges, don’t forget em.
The Rum Old Fashioned is now my go-to holiday cocktail. Haven't even tasted it yet, already certain. Cheers!
Can I just say.. your watch collection is amazing! Love that Monaco!
Oh God.. That Rum Old Fashioned looks awesome!! Perfect timing of this video being posted.. Saturday night here in India. Gonna try this! Cheers :)
Going to need a gif of that ice cube spinning in that empty glass. Beautiful shot.
(Also going to need that slow and comfortable screw against a wall, Greg.)
Man there's something so satisfying about the closeup of him shaving the ice cube.
The Vida mezcal is actually made with Espadin and not Azul, but however nice to see you making an agave spirit Old Fashioned. I'd love to see more agave spirit based drinks in the future :)
Dude congratulations on the angostura sponsorship. That’s huge!
