  • I've been asked who I'd cast as The Doctor a bunch of times over the years so here are 5 answers.
    Some links to amazing talents.

    The 5 Doctors (in case I've mangled any names) are: Alexander Siddig, Keith Lee-Castle, Louisa Harland, Ramon Tikaram and Sarah Swire.

    Refreshing to see this kind of list when I’m inundated over the web elsewhere with list of famous actors to give Doctor Who “star power”. Not to knock any actor who can get the role, but they don’t have to be hollywood tier to be good.

      A perfect example of that sort of attitude would be someone about to go intona tirade of the Doctor being a coward that hasbt got the stomach to make the tough decisions, and the Doctor just grabs the persons gun slash blaster.and shoots them just to shut them.up and the Doctor never checks if the blaster is even set for stun. Or someone would.say 'good thing it was set on stun' and the Doctor would reply 'Mores the pity'.

      When it comes to his wardrobe I just imagine wearing his Baudelaire costume from SNL.

    I have three choices;
    Obscure Actor: Lisa Dwyer Hogg who was in a Live Production
    called People, Places and Things and I thought she'd be perfect casting as a
    Doctor, who's very distant from those around her and would distract them with
    nonsense. Openly Comedic with a dark side.
    More Well Known: Charlotte Riley from Peaky Blinders, a calmer
    and more sophisticated Doctor.
    Stunt Casting: Rose Matafeo, not known for acting, and
    incredibly unlikely, but has a very Doctor-ish personality.

    Late comment, but I've always liked the idea of Peter Wingfield being the Doctor. Yes, him being Methos is a big part of it, but I think he could do a good version. Basically Nine mixed with Eleven and a bit of Twelve. Grumpy, even generally resigned, but still looks for the good and the humorous in the universe. He's madman with a box and just rolls with it. He can't save everyone and he knows it, but he still does what he can.

  • @docdave15
    @docdave15 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know I've already commented on here but I just want to say again, these choices are brilliant.
    Also, I wanted to add, if I could pick an actor to play the Doctor, I would choose James Nesbitt. I've seen his work in the Moffat penned series Jekyll and I've seen clips of his in the Martin Sheen film The Way. All of those moments indicate he could play a very crazy Tom Baker-style Doctor (maybe even crazier).
    And yes, I've seen him in The Hobbit trilogy. While he didn't a chance to shine like he could've of, there were some Doctor-ish moments with him. In particular, a deleted scene from BotFA where he lets Bilbo slip away from the mountain.

  • @deraltetrekkie6088
    @deraltetrekkie6088 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I would so love to see Amanda Tapping (Sam Carter / Helen Magnus) as an incarnation of the Doctor. In Stargate, she has proven, that she can do the technobabble (and kick some serious ass) and as Helen Magnus, she has proven, that she can do that, while playing a now relatively immortal woman. So, hand her the keys to the TARDIS, already. ^^
    While were on Stargate - David Hewlett (Doctor Meredith Rodney McKay) would be an excellent eccentric Doctor. I mean, look him playing Rodney over on Atlantis with that *knowledge* that he is wayy more competent than the rest. His closest counterpart in Who would be 6. So imagine a guy, resembling Quentin Tarantino, playing Six - that's Rodney for you.
    Whom I could also imagine as the Doctor would be Angel Coulby, Katie McGrath or Gwendoline Christie.
    And born-in-chicago-German-Actor Walter Sittler would be a good Doctor, too. In the tv-comedy "Nikola", he played Doctor Robert Schmidt, a brilliant orthopedist in the Rheintal-Hospital, who unfortunately knows, that he is brilliant and that all the women would fall over backwards in order to date him. He has this "You're good"-"I know"-attitude in this role and that could be used for the Doctor.
    And since I watched "Fantastic beasts and where to find them" I cannot help, but think "Hey, that's a doctor Who audition-tape accidentally turned into a movie" - so, yeah, Eddy Redmane could be an excellent doctor, too. Same goes of course for Emma Watson - a) because she's a great actress and B) just to piss on those idiots, who would be calling this a SJW-Stunt-Call. Let those Volldeppen (idiots) think that and then let Emma Watsons acting wipe the floor with them.
    John Steed, god bless his soul, would have been a perfect Doctor, too - same goes for Dame Diana Rigg.
    And one person, I'd at least want to see auditioning or as a one-off-doctor: Sir baldy - a.k.a. Sir Patrick Stewart.
    German actor Christoph M. Ohrt could play a good doctor - or, if TPTB over on the BBC are that adamant, that only british actors and actresses could play the doctor - he would be a delight to see as the Master. See, Christoph M. Ohrt can play the nice, the confident and the friendly guy, then suddenly turn around, look at you with this bewildered eyes and play some sort of serial killer.
    Plus: Walter Sittler - when not eligible to play the Doctor - could be a great Master or other timelord.
    But fortunately, we still have time, since Jodie Whittaker is hopefully not leaving the role, soon, despite what some idiots, who are going all "Buuuuhhhh, she's a baaaad doctor"" are vomiting in the internet.
    I watched season 11 and thought: "Know what - she's good. Give her good material to work with, then she'll be stellar."

      Eddie Redmayne as Newt Schamander is pretty much The Doctor in a world of magic. His outfit is very Doctorish... Down to the scarf. He even carries around something that is bigger in the inside than on the outside. And even the way he wields his wand shows he would very a dab hand with a sonic screwdriver.

    Rather cold but ultimately kindhearted with a constant dry wit.
    Keeps his companions around because he fears his morality would slip if he had nobody to act as an external conscience.
    He has his whimsical moments but is often quite quiet, would often respond to an villain's boasts with a glare rather than a speech.
    Would have some ability of hypnosis in the vain of McCoy's "you like guns" speech
    Oh, and his distinguishing item of clothing would be a beret.

    You should always assume terrible writing is afoot since that is basically staple of new who since 09.
    Gomez Capaldi would have worked in either configuration i think (either being doctor or Master) i felt their interplay was highlight of Capaldi era, in no small part because of how well they played off each other.
    Siddig "Bashir" as Doctor yeah i see what author of the video means and i would like that one aswell.
    i would maybe think of Noel Fielding or maybe even Chris Barrie - they seemed fairly interesting as actors and would do great as doctor.
    Back in 80s i would probably be rooting for Eric Idle or Michael Palin (in place of the 5th doctor). Keep it just as brief but let the talent shine through.

    Kind of going for a dirty look like Troughton but more inspired by auto-mechanics and steam engineers. Imagine him wearing grease and oil stained overalls with a handkerchief around the neck sometimes and an overcoat so he can have one thing that makes him Doctor-ish.
    I would play him like everything he see's is just mundane and sees saving the universe more like a blue-collar job, the only times he shows excitement is when he takes his companions to someplace they've never seen before.

    Your other choices I haven't come to know yet in any way, but you bring up some good points, sounds like they would be fun.
    As for me, I want to emphasize that which makes the Doctor stand out as an interesting and memorable character in BBC's pantheon: otherworldly, five steps ahead of all/most other characters, intellectually curious, running from the past and the mistakes therein. My picks for who can pull this off effectively: Tilda Swinton (for obvious reasons), Rupert Grint (underrated as hell, can be an effective sage under the disguise of a clown, dismantling tyrants right under their noses), James McAvoy (he can pull off the right mixture of aloof and caring that would keep his Doctor grounded), Susanna Thompson (Iron Lady with velvet gloves, a poised, charming elegance of deceptive strength and cunning) and Iwan Rheon (my go-to pick for cold, calculating, perhaps callous, figures; could alternatively make for a great low-key Master)

      Gotham's pretty good, honestly. It's not perfect, but it's casting is usually spot on, including Alexander Siddig as Ra's al Ghul (he isn't introduced until Season 3), but also other actors like Cameron Monaghan (Jerome Valeska, Joker stand in since Joker was unavailable for legal reasons), Corey Michael Smith (Riddler), Sean Pertwee (Alfred), and more. It gets a bit camp at times and not everything is done right, but I still think it's great

    An older Robert Sheehan could be an amazing burn out Doctor. I would've loved to see Hugh Laurie as a very reserved Master or Jeremy Irons as the most scenery-chewing Master ever. Rhys Ifans would also be an interesting Doctor. Jason Isaacs could be one hell of stoic Doctor or despicable Master. Ian Mcshane could be a 7th like Doctor, being dark and plotting. A lot of people say Idris Elba could be a cool Doctor... but for me, over everyone I mentioned earlier, I would pick Ruth Wilson, his Luther co-star (That also includes Paul Mcgann, who I adore, 8th Doctor is my Doctor). She was sooooo damn good in Luther, she could either play a really detached Doctor or a playfully evil Master, without going overboard. I really hate manic Masters, they need some degree of refinement and poise, they can chew scenery, but they don't need to foam out the mouth.

    Very nice, very intriguing choices. Siddig had been in my eyeline for the role for a long time, and I've seen Tikaram and would absolutely buy him in the role. Swire just from those clips looks like a great 'Doctor' performer - but I'm not sure how I'd feel about a Doctor with a non-British Isles accent.
    I completely agree with actors with less broad ranges giving generally better 'Doctor's - which isn't always their fault. For me Capaldi's Doctor became very disappointing because it felt like there was no connectivity between the sociopath grump of s8 (who I loved), the s9 brooding punk rocker and the s10 Tom Baker-variant, which I put down to Moffat and the writers realising he could play anything and so giving him anything (and by the end making him more generically 'the Doctor' rather than a specific '12th Doctor'). Matt Smith, meanwhile, performed brilliantly as a very specific Doctor, so everyone wrote for his Doctor, and he delivered consistently.

    These aren't exactly 100% certain choices, but let me know what you think Diamanda:
    1. Jack Davenport, a.k.a. James Norrington from the Disney's Pirates films, Talented Mr. Ripley, and Agent Lancelot of Kingsman.
    2. Jodie Comer of 'Killing Eve' fame, and most recently, Rise of Skywalker and Free Guy.
    3. Tom Felton, a.k.a. Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter and season 3 CW's The Flash.
    4. Riz Ahmed, of 'Rogue One', 'Nightcrawler', and 'Venom' fame.
    5. Jessica Henwick, a.k.a. Colleen Wing from Iron Fist and Nymeria Sand from GOT.

      @@DiamandaHagan That's true. Also I haven't seen Jodie Comer in anything outside of Killing Eve, but her performance as Oksana Astankova is both badass and hilarious, and she has great chemistry with Sandra Oh's Eve Polastri. If Comer never gets chosen to play the Doctor, she'd do a great job playing the Master. Not to knock Sacha Dhawan of course.

      @@DiamandaHagan Another choice I was considering for the Doctor, considering the Doctor said he's never been "ginger" would've been Rupert Grint. He is underrated compared to his fellow cast stars, Radcliffe and Watson from Harry Potter, and he has been shown to play the dramatic role as well as comic relief. Still, when it comes to the Doctor, I'd put Felton over Grint. Also, what do you think about Kris Marshall as another option? Or how about the Phelps twins?

    What *I've* always been interested in is a female-presenting Doctor who takes her cues more from Three, both in personality and dress sense. Don't get me wrong; I can understand, from a social responsibility angle, why it was important not to have the very first female Doctor be some kind of glamour goddess. But Pertwee proved way back in 1970 The Doctor isn't averse to being a bit of a clothes-horse, and I'd be interested to see something like that applied to a female-presenting body, with a return to the old velvet jackets and such as well as incorporating more feminine fashion than Three was allowed to do on screen. Combine that with a personality that's equal parts charming and jaw-droppingly arrogant, and we can really put the "Lady" in "Time Lady". I don't have a specific actress in mind, but I have a vague mental image of curly black hair and very striking eyes.

    Okay, I've tried to post this comment a couple of times and it hasn't worked. I think it might be too long, so I'm trying breaking it up into chunks as a thread. Here goes.
    If I might humbly propose one companion each for these Doctors?
    Siddig: Fairly ordinary young (seriously, more on the young side even by companion standards) woman whose main distinguishing feature is acting like an overcaffeinated theater kid. This is inspired by the idea that, since we’re working with a calmer, less silly Doctor, it can fall to the companion to provide the silliness. I’m aware that this could easily be overdone and become annoying, but if the right balance can be struck, she can bounce around being kooky and upbeat, and he can roll his eyes with fond irritation.

    • @ninaavins4887
      @ninaavins4887 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Castle: Jewish woman. Actually I’ve been mulling over the possibilities of a Jewish companion for some time now, and Castle was just the best fit of the Doctors you’ve described. See, we've had companions deal with historical prejudice before, but it's always been, like, right out in the open from the start. Martha, Bill, Ryan, Yaz-it’s not like they can keep people from knowing that they are what they are. But with a Jewish companion, you more have the option that maaaaybe people in the past wouldn't know they were Jewish if they didn't tell them.
      And from there, the sketch of an episode started to take shape. Have them land at whatever point in the past, and it's the same old pseudo-historical lark-do a little sight-seeing, soak in the atmosphere, meet the locals, discover the threat of the week, mess about dealing with it, it's all what should be a fairly light episode-only the whole time, the companion is...jumpy. Even before they encounter this week's danger. And she doesn't want to talk about why. And in an already-tense moment (right around the climax of the monster plot?) she finally explains to The Doctor why she’s so nervous being in this time period. And The Doctor had just plumb forgotten all about it. ("You humans and your endless sub-categories. How am I supposed to keep track?") Heck, this show loves English history so much: set the episode during years when the Edict Of Expulsion was in place, and when she explains, The Doctor's never heard of it.
      So, that would be one standout episode, and maybe if there’s a Christmas special during her run you could work a few jokes out of that. As to her personality outside her cultural background, I’m thinking somewhat sarcastic; the sort of person who stays in the background, observing, and likes to mask her panic with humor.

    • @ninaavins4887
      @ninaavins4887 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harland: Okay. Have an episode where one of the seeming oneshot characters is clearly extremely unhappy in her life and emotionally unstable, but is having to cover it up to placate her abusive family. Then, in the course of the adventure, it looks like she’s, like, been infected with the virus or whatever, and The Doctor tells her she only has about an hour to live. She takes the opportunity to let loose everything she’s bottled up for years, letting her family have it and just going off on everybody and life in general. Burns her bridges: her family will never accept her again after this. Then it turns out that while she was talking, The Doctor was messing around and managed to get the virus or whatever out of her, and now she’s not going to die after all. Oh crap. Out of pity, or amusement, or possibly even a little guilt, The Doctor offers to take her with her when she leaves. This girl makes Ace look well-adjusted and stable; issues and baggage out to here. As her tenure goes on, it gradually becomes clear that she’s essentially using traveling with The Doctor as a means of attempting suicide. The Doctor has to try and help her get over some of the worst of her psychological problems. Kind of like what Seven tried with Ace, though possibly with less manipulation. She may also be the first companion in ages to willingly settle on another planet, since she has so little to go back to on Earth.

    • @ninaavins4887
      @ninaavins4887 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tikaram: Basically an Elle Woods/Cher Horowitz type. If we want to spice her up and make her a little more interesting, we could have her be at some point in the past and use her for another companion idea I’ve been bouncing around of having a historical companion who spends part of their tenure unlearning a lot of unthinking prejudice. And honestly, a version from the modern day could do that as well. But in any case, she’s upper class, very pretty and feminine, smarter than a lot of people take her for, a little naive, a little bossy, but ultimately well meaning and empathetic.

    I like your choices, and agree with them, including Tilda Swinton. I was trying to find 10 women who could play the doctor if they were going to continue the female line and could think of only three, Emma Thompson, Kate Blanchett, and Tilda Swinton. Due to their presence, grace, film history, and despite being older, still quite beautiful, your females add to this.
