I actually like the 6th doctor’s outfit. It’s so iconically batshit, with this weird mad hatter vibe about it. An eccentric look for probably the most eccentric doctor
If they’d restricted it to yellow and red + white plaid for the shirt it could have worked much better but unlike most I think that a ‘louder than life’ wardrobe perfectly suited the louder than life version of the ‘80’s Doctor. I think Baker’s idea of ‘black velvet’ was totally wrong for his confident and very alien interpretation of the Doctor.
Yeah, it's a key aspect of good ol Sixie that he would wear something like that and still absolutely expect everyone he meets him to take him completely seriously
I love the Sixth Doctor's costume and the fact the designer made it to show what it SHOULDN'T be is just the cherry on top. also your 80's look is gorgeous
The reason Davison wore different shoes is because the boots where from Bakers personal wardrobe if I remember correctly. So Bake just kind of walked out with the boots and after that they realised the boots where gone and they had to improvise.
I wouldn’t say they had to improvise. Those socks and shoes were the original pieces of costume that June designed for the costume, it’s just that Tom Baker hated them, so he just started coming in with his boots.
@@BronyDanProductions Fiona Cumming said in the DVD commentary that the continuity error was down to the script mentioning shoes rather boots so no one thought to check.
@@chicagocinematic1995 that's true because that scene was shot as part of the story Tom was still part of, but for castravalva he wasn't so the boost were not available one has to assume.
36:48 Imagine if he'd gotten his preferred black outfit and The Mysterious Planet chapter of Trial of a Time Lord was properly lit to fit the gothic farce the writers intended, instead of the bright and over-lit London Underground and outside shots.
The part about when the 4th Doctor regenerates into the 5th Doctor and his boots change it shoes, there is an out universe explaination. Those boots actually belonged to Tom Baker.
@@astralarmadillo Yeah the shoes and tall socks were the original intention and was even used in the first serial of season 18, the Leisure Hive, but after that Tom switched to the boots
@@Steven_AndreyechenHe actually wore them in three stories that season! Leisure Hive, like you mentioned, but also Meglos and State of Decay, at which point they realised it wasn't the best look and brought back the boots. I'm kinda hoping with how eccentric Ncuti's style is, we might get a revival of tall boots like those someday
Great video! I found the stuff about Hartnell and Troughton's costumes being influenced by contemporary fashion super interesting. I hope you do more Doctor Who costuming videos!
this is a really intresting video essay so far. i've been burned by low quality video essays about dr who before, since everyone with a camera and an opinion thinks they can make one . but nah this one is actually pretty good. actual well researched information and production history, not just *repeat generic opinions without any substaniation and add already well known info* you get across the fandom. good job
Well this might be the best introduction to classic doctor who outfits! This is the kind of video I've been wanting for the longest time and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Peters wearing the shoes in Castrovalva because when Tom left they lost the boots. They apparently just hoped no one would notice, which worked at the time but not so much now. (No idea where I heard this so i guess just take my word for it)
Great video; thank you so much for sharing! As a mod, historian and Whovian, I really enjoyed this. I'd also be super interested in seeing your thoughts on the various companion outfits throughout the years.
i love your analysis videos so much, especially as someone who is watching the classic series at the moment and loves when creators go beyond just new who in their analysis!! also side note: your eye makeup suits you so so well
the outfits of the show are only outshined by the outfits you ware in the video. Dragon ball Z cosplay next perhaps???? curious who you think would win in a fight. The doctor or Future trunks. i believe this deserves another 2 hour video essay. as it takes that long to let people know all the ways goku would beat them both
This is a fantastic video, really good job. I am now silently awaiting a potential part 2 as i would love to hear you analyse each of the Revival doctors looks. A part of me also hopes you take a look at the non traditional doctors (such as shalk or curse of fatal death) but another, more reasonable part is aware how much more work that wiuld be
I have all of my volume sliders and knobs turned up to max but I still can't make out a word said in this video. Thank you for having this properly subtitled instead of auto-captioned.
Absolutely fantastic video, looking forward to part two! Btw the first doctor isn't wearing a frock coat, it's just a long double-breasted lounge jacket. Despite what a lot of sources say. And his trousers are houndstooth not tartan
Strongly recommend (World Distributors') DW annual from the early 80s which has a load about why they did Davison in cricket whites and has nicely reproduced artwork...
i hope its alright for me to say so, but in all this talk about outfits, i really love yours in the 80s run of costumes! One outfit that does get overlooked is the Seventh Doctor's 'New Adventures' outfit, often shown on the covers. Still with his hat, umbrella, and shoes, his shirt would vary between light blue or white, he took to wearing a red, green or beige tie, and his suit was more like a linen suit jacket and trousers, with a smiley 'Have a Nice Day' face badge on his left lapel, and sometimes the silk scarf would reemerge again. If you google 'Doctor Who New Adventures' and add the titles 'Sky Pirates', 'The Also People', and "Strange England" you can see how the outfit looks. Would be interesting to hear your opinions, and I hope you have a lovely day!
This might not be what you mean but IIRC Troughton's fur coat was a plot point in that Travers is supposed to mix up the Doctor's coat and the appearance of the Yeti...
Think William hartnel’s costume Did change when he regenerated into Troughton. As there was apparently a theory that the doctors costume was like his skin and changed body’s
First time I have seen a deep dive into the costuming for The Doctor and I love it. Though, I think the audio from the mic is about 20% of what it should be. It's pretty quiet on my end and I'm not sure if that's intentional
Very interesting video! I've looked up off bits about some of the costumes in the past (particularly Davison's, because 5 is my personal fave ^^) but I'd not looked completely in-depth like this. Hopefully you do manage to do the New Who/Newer Who Doctors!
Hi, Fellow Bioware/RPG fan and a Doctor Who fan (as well as costume design). You probably know this, but there is some VA crossover with Bioware's Dragon Age franchise (heavily recommend, if you like Mass Effect and Baldur’s Gate). From Doctor who, the actress who plays Tallulah plays Cassandra in the third game, and from Torchwood, Eve Myles (Gwen) plays a companion in the second game, and Gareth David-Lloyd is a major character in the 3rd. Not really relevant, but a fun fact. For Doctor costumes, 4's is the most iconic, of course, though I love the Victorian-ness of Eight. Six is one I flip back and forth on. It's ugly, but he pulls it off more than most.
A wonderful video - really enjoyed it👏💯 Re, the continuity error with Davison's shoes instead of boots in Castrovalva. Director Fiona Cumming put it down to the script - the script mentioned that the Doctor leaves one of his shoes as a marker point in the TARDIS - it didn't occur to them that he'd been wearing boots. Also designer Colin Lavers's original ideas for the 5th Doctor's look were a bigger deviation for the established period look. He thought combat trousers, converse boots and a fighter pilot jacket over a cricket jumper.
Wow loving the background, you definitely need to make a dragon ball z video next, given that it features so promently on the wall I assume you must know all about it 😁😁
The boots went missing hence the shoes magically appearing and I'm fairly sure it was rumoured that tom may have nicked them but don't quote me on that. also I just wanna say question marks on collars rule!
The designers of who were always influenced by current fashion. Seeing young designers using fashion choices from the past current fad for 80’s and getting them wrong. The 6th Doctor suit choice was a flash for a moment. But contemporary designers had held it up as an 80’s classic is laughably
Great video lots of new things and definitely makes me excited for the future of the show with the increased costuming for 15's seasons. Have to say 6 has an absolutely terrible costume and the blue rendition is a far superior variant, although that yellow redesign you showed is growing on me :)
Totally irrelevant, but last year I went on a couple of dates with a girl who looked exactly like you except she had black curly hair but she also loved Doctor Who. So watching this video was informative but also slightly weird
