    This is one of my favorite arrangements from Geoff. It is uniquely beautiful. I keep thinking he changed it to 6/8 time, the driving beat just keeps it moving, and the syncopation is chef's kiss good!

    Their parents must be so proud, to produce such talented quadruplets!

      These are not quadruplets! This is ONE man who does all the parts and green screens them in with himself.

    I've always felt that the minor key of the song gave it a darker feeling no mattter how it was performed. But what I loved about Geoff's version is that is simultaneously darker than any version I'd heard before, but also more joyous with those bright Piccardy Thirds resolving each verse. That's the bit that's likely throwing you off; the structure of the rest of the song isn't all that unexpected. Well, the driving beat is... that was also pure Geoff, who does love to give a song a good drive. This is one of my favorite of his arrangements; no matter how much good music he makes, I keep coming back to the gorgeous harmonies, and the richness of his voice, and the overall triumphant feeling of the piece.

    Kathy told us that Jack's Lament was the perfect excuse for Geoff to go to Home Depot to buy more pumpkins and Halloween decorations. It's his favorite holiday. Kathey dressed Geoff for this one and I think Layne did the set at Patty Cake. Eli came in the day before to do all the lighting ques. Geoffs' newest cover for Christmas is Blue Christmas. VoicePlay also has a new Christmas song. Jingle Bell Rock/ Mean Girls.

    Geoff's version reminds me of a joyous battle march.
    It's almost as if the angels are going to war and telling us that Joy is our best weapon.

    I love the way Geoff arranged this because it breathes new life into something we've heard so many times that we tune it out. Now, we listen with fresh ears.

    I think of this version as more powerful, more impassioned, not darker. It is probably my favorite Christmas cover (non-humorous variety) that Geoff has done.

    His low voice doesn't have to be melancholy :) Geoff has said that he always felt that this song needed more of a beat. He was a professional carol singer at one time, along with his wife Kathy. Geoff always makes a song his own.

    Great reaction- thanks! Both Voice Play and solo Geoff have just released their Christmas covers this year and both are very humorous (not dark) always very entertaining and full of surprises each time(They have a fun loving side and sense of humor similar to their good friends from Home Free that you have not seen yet). I think you would really enjoy Voice Play's past Christmas covers of "The Chipmunk Song" ( fun!) and "Mission Impossible/Jingle Bells" mashup (brilliant, includes J None Rap solo, and won them an award!).

    Just goes to show that music means different things to everyone who hears it. I don't get a "dark" feeling from this song at all, but Geoff changed the rhythm of the song completely that I'm used to hearing, and made it fun to listen to again!

    worth noticing that the Nightmare before Christmas medleys were all arranged by Layne back before Geoff opened his own channel.... it looks to me like they share the title for "king" of Halloween. That said - I think this is the best EVER cover of this song. I LOVE it.

  • @Wildecat10
    @Wildecat10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Layne is actually the biggest fan of Halloween and arranges most of their Halloween content. Geoff tends to lean more toward Christmas.
    Might I suggest Mele Kalikimaka from Geoff’s channel and for Voiceplay What Do You Get A Wookie For Christmas?

  • @Me-pt8sv
    @Me-pt8sv ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It's actually in 6/8 and what Geoff is doing here is subdividing it into 3/8 and 2/8 (2 groups of 3 beats with "downbeats" on 1 and 4, giving more of a "normal" feel and then 3 groups of 2 beats, with "downbeats" on 1, 3, and 5, giving more of a what you called 3/4 feel)
    Edit: It's also iambic, meaning the second syllable is stronger than the first, such as in the word "return"

    Awesome arrangement! I love the richness of Geoff’s voice but he certainly put an interesting twist on this song. Almost a dirge but the 3/4 time kept it from going all the way.

    Geoff's newest release, Carol of the Bells makes a great companion piece to this. It has been described as "A Christmas Battle Song", "Carol of the Bass", "Thunder of the Bells" and "sung by a dragon choir". Guaranteed to blast away the overly-sweet superficial cheer that's marketed our way a lot of the time.

    Chris, Geoff takes us through the five stages of grief in his covers. I have reached acceptance that I'm not worthy...and I'm ok with that.

    I've always seen this song as a bit 'minor key'. With an almost medieval sound to it. What surprised me more was that "JOY" change to major in the first few lines. I see this as a much more joyful rendition than usual.

    Just subscribed looking forward to more of your VoicePlay/Geoff Castellucci reactions. My favorites (if I absolutely had to choose) would be Dream On, Rich Man/Girl, Little Mermaid, We don't talk about Bruno, and from Geoff... Shenendoah, Sixteen Tons, Way Down, Headless Horseman and Monster Mash. Kind of hard to decide between them.
    VoicePlay tries to put out a new cover each month, and so does Geoff.

    I've never liked this song, but I'd mostly heard the mall versions. Then I heard Geoff's version and Annie Lennox's take on it. Completely opposite and give such new interpretations of the music. You would really enjoy some of Geoff's more humorous songs - 'Way Down' took him 80 tries to hit the low note, and it's the first time he names his clones.
