Today, I watched the amazing acapella group ‪@Thevoiceplay‬ for the first time and they blew me away! It always amazes me how a group like this can cover the whole frequency space with just their voices and make a song sound so full and dynamic! I cannot wait to hear more of their stuff! Hope you enjoy and thanks for stopping by! #reaction #reactionvideo #voiceplay #voiceplayreaction #music #musicproduction #acapella

Although they prerecord the audio for their videos, this one impressed Disney so much they invited VoicePlay to come perform this live for an event. Their cover of Metallica's 'Nothing Else Matters' also scored them an invitation to perform live with the band Chicago a few months ago. I've seen people accuse them of autotuning the hell out of their vocals, but they use only minimal pitch correction. (I didn't realize until I became a fan of these guys that modern audiences are so accustomed to everything being autotuned that anyone who's trained to sing consistently on-key sounds fake to them. It's so sad!)

VoicePlay are phenomenal, and they always give their own creative spin to both the arrangements and the videos they produce. They are 100% independent, and do 95% of the work on all their projects, only subbing out things like makeup, steadycam and the final mix engineering. They perform anything and everything, from barbershop Disney tunes to classic rock covers, from sea shanties to classical compositions, from R&B to electronica, and anything else that catches their attention. I highly recommend their covers of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters", the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby", AJR's "Bang!" and "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Edvard Grieg. Or really anything else that catches you attention; VoicePlay doesn't put out bad music, so find something that intrigues you and check it out. These guys will always surprise you.

To answer your question- it's a produced music video. They do somewhat sing during filming, but it is along to a click track, and the final audio is a separate part.
As covered in another comment, the arrangement, recording, video concept, production, and editing is all them. They have earned the nickname "Theater Kids of A Capella" for a reason. Their creativity knows only one bound- the limitation of time. They put out one "large scale" video per month. (On exceptionally rare occasions they may only put out short form in a month.)
Anything by them, or from Geoff's solo work, is worth the while. They are absolute creative geniuses.

Rather than just a click track, VoicePlay (and virtually every other music video performer that isn't being recorded live in front of an audience) are lip-synching/singing along with a final edited studio mix of the song. By singing along, they make sure that the video accurately reflects the mouth, throat, tongue (yes, that happens!), breathing, etc. what happened when they originally performed their parts individually.

You are about to have so much FUN! VP's work goes from humor like this - to wild, chaotic humor like their newest drop, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, to epic drama to sensitive ballads. Three that are very different and show different sides of them are: Hoist the Colors,Tennessee Whiskey and Dream On. One of my personal favorites is their recent, jaw-dropping cover of Creep. All of the members of VoicePlay have crazy ranges, and they don't play in their own lane, which makes it possible for them to write arrangements where the singers wind around each other differently than is typical. And yes, they do all of their own arrangements, videos, lighting, video editing - all of the main pieces. Sometimes they bring in someone for special makeup or costumes, but mostly they make the creative decisions themselves (and frequently build and dress the sets, too).

If you want to try vocal power & expertise, two beautiful wall of sound videos include their cover of Metallica's 'Nothing Else Matters' and Miracle of Sound's 'Valhalla Calling.' For emotion that pulls hard on the heart, their covers of 'I Can't Make You Love Me' and 'Creep' are among my favorites. There are so many more of so many genres. I've become a devoted fan just based on how incredibly brilliant they are.

Oh you are in for one big rabbithole.! They cover so many styles in their own wonderful way. With the current lineup Geoff (you need headphones with a good bass) , Layne (beatboxer king), Cesar (will make you laugh and cry in equal measure) and Eli(rock god among many other talents) they always pull in a guest or sometimes two. Quite often it's J None who used to be in the group before joining the Navy so keep that in mind if you watch older stuff by them. They (along with Geoff's wife Kathy) do all the production themselves apart from the steady cam, final mixing and makeup when it's very complicated, which it often is !
If you think Geoff was low in this one just wait. Dragonborn comes (from Skyrim) starts with him literally sounding like a dragon and Valahala Calling has him doing an insane long held 2depths of the earth2 note.. Hellfire (another Disney but much darker) has him as lead singer.
Then you have fully "instrimental " pieces like Halo (from the game) and Hall of the Mountain King. Creep which has Cesar in a leading role will make you cry. Then there is the post apocalyptic styled tracks including most recently Seven Nation Army. They have covered Metallica's Nothing Else matters or for silly try Drunken sailor or the most recent the Lion sleeps tonight ! and don't forget to block out some time at Halloween as they really go to town then. They give everyone screen time in different ways and they are all have huge ranges and flexibility.
Oh and then there is Geoff and his "brothers" on his own channel, try the two songs from the Hobbit, Over the misty mountain cold and I see fire . This last one he really looks and sounds like four different people.

Great reaction. As with most music videos by any group the music is prerecorded separately in a studio, if you want to hear what VP sounds like live try some of their "ACA Top 10" videos those are almost all one shots except Video games and Movie themes. Since they have been uploading content for about 12 years there is a huge catalog to chose from in almost any genre, In those you'll also see older members that have moved on to other projects. Their Disney medleys are amazing but their rock, theater, game themes and even goofy videos are stunning. Their minis/shorts are a treasure trove of stunning 1 minute gems. Even if the video is full of shenanigans the music is always stellar.

Always excited to see someone find VoicePlay. I have yet to find one of their songs that isn't amazing, you really can't go wrong with any of them. That said, some of my personal favorites are Valhalla Calling, Oogie Boogie's Song, In the Air Tonight, and Drunken Sailor.
They record the music before hand, then lip-sync to the recording for the video shoots. (They don't use the audio from the footage we see, which is why it is lip-syncing.)
I don't see other comments saying it, but most of their big videos are filmed at Patty Cake, a production studio co-owned by the beatboxer Layne and a former VP member.
They bring in specialists for things like camera work and occasional make-up/costumes, as well as the final audio mix being sent to a sound engineer (I am told it is the same one used by Penatonix and Home Free as well). Outside of those, they do everything themselves or with the help of friends and family, like how their production manager is Kathy, wife of their bass singer Geoff.

There are currently four permanent members of VoicePlay so they add a guest to make their five part harmonies. And all have a wide range, Geoff's being the largest at five octaves. He's the bass in VoicePlay who has his own channel of low bass covers. He is one of the main arrangers of their covers too, the other being Layne, the vocal percussionist, with Eli doing some too. Eli is the little bald guy who is also in charge of lighting and backgrounds. These videos are studio productions, being pre-recorded,, as all studio videos are now, though they do sing along during filming. They can, however, sing just as well live, although obviously they wouldn't have the same visual appearance live.

  • @janetdw
    @janetdw 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

They each pre-record in their own home studios and then the person who did the arrangement does the initial mix. To me I would think that would be harder than if they recorded it all together.
If you go through their back catalog, you can see their ACA top tens which are recorded live to see that yes, they really do sing that well all together. They are perfectionists and will work on it until it’s right.
The bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, and the beatboxer, Layne Stein are original members of the group which did their first recorded album in 1997 right out of high school. At that time they used the group name 4:2:Five because they had 4 to 5 members as they were still evolving.
They’ve had the most changes in the baritone slot. The beatboxer was the original baritone and was replaced by Tony Wakim from 2010 to 2017. He is now Layne’s business partner at the production studio where this was filmed. Around that same time, Eli Jacobsen, the bald tenor, also joined the group. When Tony left to cofound PattyCake Productions J None came in and worked with them until 2021 when he was recruited by the Navy to sing with them. He still appears as often as he can as a semi guest artist. That slot was filled by Cesar Delarosa who was the character with the umbrella. In 2021, another member, Earl who was their high tenor left for personal reasons and that space is still open. Since they aren’t touring these days they fill that slot with a variety of guest artists, many of whom return over and over again. They always list everyone involved in the production in their credits at the end.
They are by far my favorite a cappella group, partly because they cover so many genres and partly because a lot of their things are done a little more theatrically.
Subscribing in hopes that you will cover more of them. In addition since you seem to like the deep bass notes you really should check out Geoff’s personal channel which he started when Covid stopped them from touring.

They record the audio parts individually (in their respective homes since COVID), so I assume they must use a click track for the timing. Even when they do show mics in a video, they're props: the audio is all mixed before they shoot the video. (Pretty much all professional music videos are done that way, because it allows for the mix engineer to adjust the relative volume of all the parts to perfection. The major exception is, of course, concert footage, where the imperfections in the mix are mostly covered up by the noise of the crowd anyway.)

Whatever they’ve just released becomes my favorite for a while but I always return to hoist the colors for its perfect melting of theatricality drama and musical genius. It’s like the world shortest opera.

@@setonhillstudios VP are the "theater kids", PTX are the "popular kids", and HF are the "kids hanging out in the parking lot". All three are excellent, and each group has distinctly different approaches. I am partial to Home Free, but I have to admit that VP is excellent - just a different style than I prefer. And the newest 'group on the block' is The Bass Gang. There is so much fantastic a capella stuff in just those groups, you can be busy for months.

Regarding your questions/points about the sound engineering, and while they have performed this song live with microphones (and once before an audience of Disney employees, look up the video on YT), this performance is lip-synced video over an audio track that was previously recorded in-studio. Often they'll record each track in individual home studios, each one singing over previous tracks already recorded by other members, or metronome 'click tracks', and mixed later. As is most all professional music anywhere these days.

Great reaction! I subscribed! Welcome to the Voiceplay Rabbit Hole! You're going to have a blast! I hope you don't mind, but here are some unofficial (but important!) rules for listening to Geoff (the Bass, who has a solo channel) and Voiceplay! I just came up with them on my own, but after years of being a Voiceplaya, I've found they're necessary for optimal Voiceplay (and to a degree, Home Free as well) listening. You've already got #3 down, so kudos to you on that!
    The rules:
#1) VERY important! ALWAYS watch to the very end of the video, or at least a ways into the patrons scrolling. Often times it may LOOK like the video has ended, but there's an outro. Also, watching to the end lets you see their awesome cover art.
#2) Always leave the closed captions on. Geoff's wife Kathy (she helps with lots of their videos, and appears in some too! Such an amazing woman!) has hearing loss, so sometimes there will be little hidden gems in the CC.
#3) If you pause a video to speak, rewind it ten seconds before you start it again, to make sure you don't miss anything.
#4) Don't look away from the screen, or close your eyes for more than a second, because, again, you might miss a visual gag or clever moment.
#5) Don't go into their videos with expectations on what the song will be like, i.e., that it will be the same as the original. These guys put their own spin on things. The only thing to expect, generally, is to be blown away by their sheer talent.
#6) Unless you have a REALLY great speaker system with stereo sound, ALWAYS wear good headphones/earbuds with Voiceplay and Geoff. They do amazing little tricks you can only pick up with those hearing devices. Plus, some of Geoff's notes are so low you practically can't hear them without headphones.

      @DravenGal 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@nancyholter5646 Ah, I see. Yes, most of the rules do apply, though I think with Home Free they have more musical "blink and you'll miss it" moments than visual. Meaning, you have to listen even more carefully for the little gems in their songs. "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer," for example. "This Bud's for you!" With Voiceplay, being the Theater Kids that they are, there are more visual gags.

Absolutely ❤ Voiceplay...My favorite is their Little Mermaid Medley.
If you want to get a wonderful wall of sound accapella experience, check out Voctave!! They are the "orchestra" of accapella and Absolutely astounding. I would suggest starting with either the Disney Princess Medley which features the ladies on leads and the Disney Heroes and Villians medley which features the guys on lead. Totally different then voiceplay but an amazing experience.

I’ve seen them perform live. Layne, the beatboxer, can handle his job sans any click track.
All the videos are lip synced, otherwise the sound quality would suffer. That’s true for pretty much all music videos.

@@setonhillstudios Well, if you dig Disney and have seen Hunchback of Notre Dame, their cover of “Hell Fire” is Geoff focused. And you can find his solo cover of “Jack’s Lament” from Nightmare Before Christmas as well, which is not acapella. He does all the backing vocals as well.
His full name is Geoff Castellucci - but that solo channel is a whole new rabbit hole.

I thought they possibly had some condenser microphones (or shotgun mics) out of frame like movies do or a lot of vocal performances do to capture the ambience of the room. 🤷🏻‍♂️ They definitely sounded great though!
