Yes ! - This is actually an interesting debating point. I cast metal and have always worn high industrial boots. On the rare occasion a globule of molten metal has dropped onto my boot, it's once or twice dropped through one of the lace holes, burned through my sock and proceeded to burn its way into the top of my foot. Unlacing and removing the boot has been impossible to achieve in the few seconds required to save my foot. Compare this with bare feet, or wearing a sandal. A nearby bucket of cold water can see you plunge you foot into it resulting in virtually no damage whatever being suffered. I've never even possessed any sandals to perform an experiment, but to me, it demonstrates that the answer isn't totally clear-cut. Of course, my boots have steel toe-caps so the issue of dropping something heavy onto my foot isn't going to be solved by wearing sandals !
