  • 2004 Subaru Forester xt automatic transmission clunks every time I put in reverse or drive, I just change the transmission mount I didn’t make any difference, could that be the rear differential bushings?

When I went to les schwab, the guy said the cv axel is POSSIBLY the issue. He took the car for a test drive and felt the sudden jerk into reverse from parking. When he came back he said the car clanks in reverse as I already knew. He seemed like he never seen that before. Afterwards, he said the cv axel definitely needs to be replaced and that it might fix that issue. Will try to find this comment again when I get the $ to fix it and see if that is the fix to the clank problem.

I will not disappoint. Every part of me thinks that it's the trans but there's a small part of me that hopes it is the axel. Mine is an AWD 01 outback. It seems like this issue happens to AWD so hopefully I found the fix. I'll be back here with answers in about 3 hours

Well. It still slams gears. Not as loud or as hard, so replacing those cv axles DEFINITELY HELPED but they didn't completely fix the issue. Car drives so much more smooth, doesn't shake or any of the other crazy issues. It's hard to know if the reverse is fixed or not but I can say the overall car drives worlds different. Feels like a completely different car. They said the cv axles couldn't be any more messed up. They were bone dry and just completely in the crapper. For me, it is such a small movement when it changes gears that I would say it feels right next to good. Some time I will have to go get a transmission fluid exchange and have a specialist take a look even though I was told the trans is brand new. You do need a Subaru mechanic to deal with anything that has to do with the transmission because it is AWD and because of the brand for whatever reason. If you want to test the waters, do it yourself after extensive research into what to be careful of.

I have a 42k mile 2014 Dodge Dart it vibrates ALOT! And today it made a weird sound when i put it in reverse it was really weird and just standing there parked it sounded like a rattling sound that came and go but it stopped but as soon as i backed up it sounded even louder. I’m not sure what it can be but im scared it might be the transmission or deferential… It drives good, shakes alot, its automatic but it changes gears well… But also sometimes when i slow down to 8-9mph and let the brake go it does a jumping movement back and forth while slowly moving straight. I changed only 2 of the engine mounts i stills need the transmission one. Changed control arms, bushing, everything u can imagine in the front end cause it was fucked now it has this sound… Its really driving me crazy cause I’ve spent 2k+ already and it still has tiny details like this one.

That kind of sound doesn't just happen because of a vehicle being old. This is a very specific issue. I guarantee that if most cars made this type of noise as a natural occurance due to age there would be no 12 year old vehicles on the road.

I had a similar issue with my `00 Tahoe months back. Real bad vibration coming from the front. I broke a cardinal rule and started blindly replacing parts. Sway bar bushings, rotors and even U-joints. Nothing solved it. One day on my way to work my Tahoe was vibrating so bad I thought my entire front end was going to fall apart. After I got home I jacked the Tahoe up and started checking everything again. I finally spun the rear tires and heard the worst sound coming from the rear differential.
The noise sounds like marble or walnuts was loose in the rear diff.
I popped the rear diff cover only to be met with a silver gear oil. The spider and side gears disintegrated. All the vibration was being translated from the rear to the front. Not saying this could be your issue but depending on how old your avalanche is and if you never been in the rear diff, now would be a good time to check the gears if you can't find the source of your vibration issue and at least get some fresh fluid in there as preventive maintenance.
Also you can still check for warped rotors, out of round tires and U-joints for the vibrations and the U-joints for the clunking.
