    Every automatic car I've ever owned has done this and with my dad (RIP) being a mechanic and never complaining about it with his cars, I just figured it was normal but now I know why it's normal. Good video, thanks!

    Thank you for clarifying that the clunk is normal and it does not hurt the transmission I have a mercedes and it clunks when on incline or decline. I almost feel pain when I have to shift from P to Drive . Not now that I learned this is normal.

    I love when a mechanic tells people a "clunk" is normal. When it is in fact, not normal. Especially with non- new cars. 😒
    If you have a hard shift from park into reverse, as if there is abnormal tension in placing the gear shift into another position. You likely have an issue with your transmission, it could be low cost, or high cost issue. Clunks are not "normal". Things should move smoothly unless you're driving a race car that's got an extremely stiff clutch setup ect.

    That’s what I thought I was having happen to me in my Ram 1500. Sucks that my parking brake is seized at the moment though 😂. However, when I’m shifting from drive to reverse or vice versa (with my transmission being set up in a “P R N D” way) I hear a nasty clunk, and sometimes in reverse it goes as far as “jolting” the truck. Truck has 194563 miles and if I could do some preventative work to make the transmission last longer, obviously- I’d like that 😂

    I usually go into neutral first, then apply parking brake, then shift into park. I heard this lessens the ware on your transmission overtime but not 100% if it holds true. Still do it out of habit even on level surfaces lol

      I just keep my foot on the brake, pull the parking brake all the way, then shifted in the park. Then when you get back in your car and put it into reverse can you pull your parking brake after your shift into reverse

    well explained :) is the clunk more massive when shifting from P to R in an incline. rather than P to D. or it's the same depending how stiff the incline?? in my case first, i put my foot on the brake then, neutral the car rolls a bit. and then use the hand brake.

    • @crytech706
      @crytech706  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question, usally if that happens it's a lack of hydraulic prime, or it's engaged into gear literally right as you start on a cold start, cars engine is basically a vacuum pump and will run at a higher RPM on first start and not letting it calm down for 30 seconds or till it reaches a low RPM like 700 RPM it will engage softer, if not it's an internal problem but it would happen everytime you go into drive, if it's first start up then it's just the engine at a high RPM and trying to go lower RPM to soften the blow on engagement, sorry for the long explanation

    I have a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SE 2.5 and I just recently (like a month ago) got my "sealed system" transmission serviced which included a new filter and emptying the old transmission fluid and filling with new transmission fluid and now this just started happening to me. The clunk feels almost violent, it's very hard a very loud, and MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND THE LITTLE WRENCH THAT USUALLY ONLY COMES ON WHEN I NEED AN OIL CHANGE😭. I tried to hook an OBDII scanner up to it to read the codes and even though I see the check engine light on, it's not reading any codes. I did notice when I do what you suggested in your video it does help, but the check engine light is still on. Another thing I noticed is if I try to drive my vehicle after putting it into drive after the clunk it is very slow to move and almost feels like I have the parking brake on, at least until I get into like 3rd gear (it's an automatic) but as soon as stop at a light or slow down it's goes back to barely creeping along. The rpms don't rev up though which I find weird considering I almost have to floor it just to get it up to 10-15 mphs. Any suggestions? Sorry for the long description.
