In this video we’re going to do a ballistics gel test and review of the following hunting ammunition fired from the following test rifle:
    - 223 Remington Federal PowerShok 64 grain Soft Point
    - CZ 527 Carbine chambered in 223 Remington with an 18.5 inch barrel (safe to fire 5.56x45 per CZ)
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

Yes, I use the 55gr. SP Power Shok both in .223 and .22-250 sometimes for deer. I don't use the 64gr. Don't ever overlook the loads billed for varmints. As we have seen they will surprise you and like you said may perform better than those billed as deer loads. I mostly use hand load SPs for the best accuracy but these Power Shoks are plenty accurate. Yes it has performed well with lots of different game. I was not surprised by this load since I have used it.

I’ve been using these for years. They used to only be $10-12 a box . They make a great hunting/defense round or if you are looking for a barrier blind round that still performs after hitting an intermediate barrier. I’ve heard ppl claim federal uses the 64 grain gold dot bullet in this load. Idk if they do but it definitely acts like a Speer gold dot

Your barrel is exactly 18.5" according to CZ discontinued model data.

I think the only difference is the box. I believe if I'm not mistaken, the 64 gr only had 1 product number. Great video 👍

I noticed the antlers on the box as well,64 grain with good shot placement,I think this should put a deer down pretty well

I use these 55grain soft point and double tap 62 grain BTHP for home defense.

It looks more like a home defense round. Great video!

The first rounds I picked were Winchester Powermax 64 gr because they were listed as deer rounds and they were bonded to retain weight. Thinking an in and out hole bled better. The out hole is the thing a home defense round wants to avoid. And with barrier considerations. I also chose 64 gr Speer Gold Dot. Neither seem to be manufactured any longer. I have not shot anything with either.

Love the .223 ammo tests. Been looking for a good starter deer round for my 8 and 9year Olds. They are small and recoil is a factor. Want to get them used to it before going up in caliber. Thanks as always. Great info.
6.5 PRC tests sometime? Just bought a 24inch xrp thumbhole for hunting and would love to see how they perform.

Thanks for these videos ! Have you tried the Winchester 64g Power Point? I'll check out your leather. Really enjoyed the PPU 55 SP the other day. Privi also makes a 75g HPBT that is the angel of death on whitetails. If you have a fast-twist barrel, you should try it. I buy Privi bullets in bulk and handload and find all their bullets to be excellent across many calibers. I find most their factory loads to be satisfactory, but like all factory ammo always underpowered and doesn't take advantage of the bullet's potential.

So this is the same as federal TRU 233 64gr. Targetsportsusa has it for 15$ a box rn

I suspect that the lower velocity is due to the shorter barrel of your rifle… I assume the test barrel at the factory is longer.

Check the manufacturers load or catalog number on the box. If they are loading 2 different 64 grain bullets the number will be different.

Do people actually hunt deer with 16 inch .223s? I've never seen it. The 18.5 inch Mini-14 was the most common back in the 90s. Now I see mostly 20 inch ARs.

It's a long bullet so the question is if it is accurate given your rifle's twist. If it is, then this has the penetration to be a deer load.

Same bullet but they changed the recommendation and box art. Makes sense they dropped the deer hunting marketing most of the states that allow 223 Remington for deer don't have many restrictions and hunters usually have a decent grasp of its limitations and use it despite so many people recommending against it. Meanwhile most of the country were it is illegal to use 223 for large game it's not usually illegal to use it for varmints so the marketing change I think is mostly to appeal to a larger demographic. But this would make a great deer or hog load from what I'm seeing regardless.

My simple rule is 1,000 ft-lbs at 200 Yd with a sectional density of .22 or better. This is because I respect my quarry. I wonder why .223 is not legal for big game in many jurisdictions…hmmm. This guy’s a cowboy. Yahoo.

@@bekkerbosbeer3453 …and here, poachers shoot deer with 22LR quite effectively. Just saying as a sportsman I completely disapprove.
The largest bear in Canada was killed with a 22 by a native woman. But I am not going to make a TH-cam recommending bear hunts with a 22.

223 is not a deer round very unethical
