  • 243 Winchester Federal PowerShok 100 grain PSP ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Compact with 20 inch barrel.
    Range gear: masonoutdoors.com
    Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

My son just took his first deer with this exact ammo. By far the most accurate and consistent in his rifle. Can’t remember where I read it, but someone reached out to federal and they said the blue box is the exact same as their non typical, it’s just packaged differently to appeal to different markets.

I have used this load for many years out of my Marlin XS-7 rifle. That rifle has a 22" barrel and synthetic stock, with a 3x9 Leupold scope. The ammo is deadly on deer, accurate, widely available and cheap. No need to spend more money on something else.

This stuff will certainly still do the job, just not a lot of room for iffy angles, I’ve used this same stuff and CoreLokt 100gr from this same model 70 compact to take several deer and with broadside shots tucked behind the shoulder blade it works just fine and exits on smallish east Texas deer, those all dropped or only went as far as a jolt of adrenaline would take them, that said I’ve taken some angling towards shots that didn’t exit, the deer still went down fairly quickly but little or no blood on some, one was in some thick woods and it went about 30 yards but it was surprisingly difficult to find, trails all which way and zero sign, had to grid search it and about tripped on the deer.

@@masonoutdoors_masonleather Agreed, my son shot a small buck with same rifle using a handloaded 90gr nosler ballistic tip. Hardly any blood trail, took us several hours grid searching to find it. No exit hole bullet came apart & fragmented. I'm glad we recovered the spiked buck as it was his first deer at age 12. Ended up being a memorable hunt because I tagged a nice 8pt also.

My wife just used this load on her first deer she’s ever killed. Performance was good, he was heart shot from about 50-60 yards and ran about 15-20 yards before toppling over. We did catch the bullet, it was stuck in a far side rib bone/inner layer of skin. It did expand well. the lead core was loosened from the jacket enough that we could pop the jacket off and back on the core. We washed it off, and made a necklace that incorporates the empty brass and the copper jacket as you could still stick the copper jacket back in the brass. A pretty cool souvenir for her. I’d say any 100 gr. Typical Soft point will do the job on a whitetail

I've been working my own loads in .243 for my old Ruger M77, but I use this exact ammo for general zeroing in/target practice because it's on the cheap and more available side.

I took my first deer with this exact load. 75 yards. Hit the heart and both lungs and ripped the heart in half and took a nasty chunk out of both lungs. Went all the way through, exit was about little over an inch squared. Ruined the exit side shoulder (my fault) and dropped dead. It’s effective for sure.

They sort of did the opposite. In other words, they used a different 100 grain soft point in this “243B” Power Shok load 3 or 4 years ago. I’ve taken a deer with the older version. Not sure if the older 100grain soft point was discontinued or what. A lot of their stuff comes from Speer, but I’m not sure if it all does.

**IMPORTANT TO NOTE** Federal changed the 100 grain soft point bullet in the blue box Power Shok ammo approximately 3 or 4 years ago, despite the Federal model number remaining 243B. I am 100% certain, as I own both versions. I have shot a deer broadside in the lungs with the older version. I have not shot a deer with the new soft point. Both versions are outstandingly accurate in four 243’s I own. One is a 77RL Hawkeye (20” bbl), and three 700’s (one is an RR from 2018 and the other two are RAR serials 2022 and 2023; these 700’s have a 24” bbl).
If someone used Federal Power Shok 243B’s, it would be helpful to know when they were purchased. The older blue boxes had a different design than the new one with the tent.
Great video AS ALWAYS, and keep up the excellent work! Love these tests!

  • @Eggomania86
    @Eggomania86 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think a lot of factories deliberately throttle down their ammunition. It's interesting, if you get a hold of military surplus or ammunition intended for Law enforcement the velocities are as advertised. I've actually tested this. I have a .308 BDL Remington 700. I fired Lake City m-80 ball, 7.62x51mm from it, I got the s the 2800 fps from a 147gr fmj. I also tested 5.56x45 from my CZ 527 M193 ball got 3200 fps. I compared it civilian hunting loads in .308 and .223 billed velocities were on average 100 to 250 fps slower than their military counterparts. Same with Law enforcement ammunition. If you want billed velocities start handloading. Also do the recommended barrel break in procedures that helps too. I believe there's a reason why this happens. One, military and law enforcement agencies needs require their ammunition to meet different specifications. Two, it needs to work, and it needs to go bang every time. With hunting ammunition, these things are not as important. There's a lot more inconsistency. They do this to cut cost as well. As we saw with some of your videos, hunting ammunition does have the tendency to fragment, especially cup and core bullets, even at these reduced velocities. Factories deliberately make jackets thinner for bullets as a cost cutting measure. I believe a thicker jacket can help with cup and core separation. That brings us up to another reason why factory ammunition is deliberately throttled down. The higher the velocities, the higher the likelihood these bullets won't perform. If you take a 30 - or 40 year old box of ammunition assuming it's stored properly, you do get pretty darn close to billed velocities. I had an old box of 150gr federal American eagle advertised velocities were again 2850 fps. I was getting anywhere from 2785fps to 2845fps. Do a test of 7.62x51mm M-80 ball you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm just sharing the results I got and my hypothesis on why modern factory ammunition is slower.

I prefer other calibers in the lower recoil range than this one ,but thats mainly because my shot distance is 125 yards or less and i can go lower velocity /bigger bullet . I found early on that my particular rifle likes 100grn bullets and despite it's antique status will drop a deer or large hog where they stand. Like the .250 (-3000) Savage the .243 does not, in my opinion at least, get the attention or credit they deserve because so many hunters have been programed to believe that if their rifles are not chambered in at least .270 or one of the more recent "wizz bang" cartridges they are under gunned in the hunting fields.

Purely speculation, but I have been seeing a lot of 6mm bullets from otherwise reliable product lines not handle game or gel test well. And this makes me wonder if it’s actually harder to manufacture lead core 6mm and smaller hunting dedicated bullets. Like I said, it’s just speculation.

The smaller something gets the harder it is to make, absolutely a viable conclusion

I humidity disagree. although weight retention not great, expansion ,penetration ideal for deer . better bullets to choose from, absolutely. but in proper perspective not a failure either. papa wishing you well 😊

I'm surprised how slow all the 243 rounds you have tested. Less than 1700 ft lbs is kind of pathetic. Barely a hair more powerful than 7.62x39

Unless you handload most factory ammo comes in well under the published velocity.

Published velocity isn't developed in real world firearms and barrel lengths. I would hope more and more people would come to understand this. Maybe if enough of the customer base would squawk and cry to the manufacturer, we'd get published data that is actually meaningful, rather than fairy tale status.

Federal blue box is trash for everything except 12 gauge. I had a few boxes of this stuff for 308 and 12 out of 20 rounds the bullet just fell out of the casings.

Never experienced anything like that with it across several calibers and hundreds of boxes. Anything can happen though.
