Real reason the arms are held backwards when a character in anime is running incredibly fast! Running animation at impossible speeds can be achieved with 2-4 drawings, commonly used by directors like Tex Avery or Hanna-Barbera in Western animation. But that speed does not allow enough time for the arms to move in tandem and still be visually readable to the viewer. This is also true for small characters like Jerry Mouse whose shorter limbs had to move at faster speeds. So to fix this, they would animate the arms held outstretched in front of the character. Same principle is being applied here with arms held backwards. Also keeps limbs away from the face for important acting moments or dialogue. This has been your bonus fact! :)
There's another reason for moving one's arms while running; the muscle groups that swing the arms are connected to the ones that expand and contract the rib cage while breathing. This in turn means moving the arms increases the amount of air taken in while running. Anime characters don't breath. Not animating the arms saves hours of animation time per second of finished animation. Man hours spent animating a run cycle is expensive, thus why they save as many frames of animation as possible for a run cycle by drawing this type of run cycle instead of a traditional one.
even if they did would it matter? in naruto atleast, they make massive steps. The amount of distance you run is less to do with your number of steps and more to do with the force you put onto the ground per step. Chakra is the only thing that makes this possible. If you look at the way they run, it makes perfect sense. Minimum steps for naruto and goku, and sonic's running is more like a wheel than steps, he is just a unicycle race car... so yea aerodynamics is the only thing that really matters here.
i dont see how not animating the arms saves a significant amount of time. a run cycle is repeated. it wont take very many frames to complete one cycle then repeat it. i think cost and animation time is a poor argument. its just lazy some scenes in naruto dont even animate the limbs much when they jump tree branch to tree branch. and yes i've done animation before.
I know it was filler, but that one arc where they had to guard a runner on his super important race explains it too. Ninjas have special training that makes them superhuman and run fast. The runner guy doesn't have any secret ninja training, so he runs the same way as normal people do. I believe there's even a line where mention how surprising it is for this guy to be running so fast without being a ninja.
No actually you're wrong he was actually faster than the ninjas since he had trained for pure speed rather than combat speed and he did the naruto run as well. Everyone in the naruto universe can tap into chakra to do superhuman feats, ninjas just have the best training for its use.
I think this running method will be more common on Venus, as the atmosphere is 96 times denser there, so drag is a significant factor even at normal running speeds.

I'm kinda curious at what running speed/wind speed Naruto running would start being better. But I guess there's not really a formula for how much energy you need doing either one
Not exactly. You become a "smaller target" if the projectile is moving in a perfect straight line from the front. On the other hand, not only are you an easier target from the side and above, you're also closer to the front, which will also make you easier to hit.
I mean, you’re still the same size, and like the other dude said that just increases your dimensions from other angles, gg if someone has the high ground cause your back is a whole lot flatter.
@@pepe2veces now I'm just picturing if the Naruto run was the superman run this entire time. And placing all those moments They Naruto run doing the super man run
I always though the logic behind the Naruto run being faster/more efficient was the nearly horizontal posture. The arms serving much like we think tails helped the larger bipedal dinosaurs when running, by providing balance. But the main thing being the posture and the forward leaning of the body, so that instead of being a "run" (which I defined as forward motion driven almost entirely by the limbs of the person running) it was more of a controlled forward fall. That way gravity does most of the work for you as far as momentum, and your own legs function like attitude thrusters on Sci-Fi space shuttles, providing direction without even needing to do much in the way of forward thrust.
Ive seen someone interviewing a former ninja in japan and one of thos questions where if this kind of run is effective or not. He answered that it indeed is. (Ik no one asked)
Mohandas Jung they kept the hands tucked into there stomach or most the time at there sides, but it wasn’t a very fast run. It was actually much slower ,almost more like a jog, but it let them be quite while saving stamina on long distance “runs” through the night.
A story I saw on Japanese TV about the history of the “Naurto Run” was that the position was to conserve energy and was not for speed. The position was to get the center of gravity forward so the falling sensation of gravity helps pull the runner instead of just using the legs alone to generate the movement. Most people fail at doing the Naurto run because they don’t get to the balance point to get the efficiency benefit. It’s not just your body you get in front of your feet, but your hips slightly in front of your feet too. Kind of like stumbling where the feet are trying to keep up with the body falling forward. Again, it wasn’t for speed, but to conserve energy, according to the report.

So the real question becomes, at what velocity do the two methods of running intercept? In other words, how fast would somebody have to be going for the nauruto run to become beneficial?
Did you watch the video? He literally gave the equation and an example. You can pretty much google example of speeds or at least the limit a human can theoretically run enough for the drag force to matter. Give or take 40-50% of Fd , substitute, get V. Spoiler alert: it doesn't matter since human cant reach that speed enough. You can wear a tight suit however you want it still wont be beneficial even when running like naruto. You're question is pretty much like a grade school book asking how fast a Mitsubishi car has to go for aerodynamics, drag, etc would matter and be beneficial lmao
Thrust is only necessary for ACCELERATION. But once you're at top speed, momentum takes over and energy is better spent on breathing and longevity. This is why sprinters start the race leaning forward, to give themselves more of a drastic angle from which to push off. But as they reach their top speed, they move upright so that they are running ALONG the ground with the least resistance and the least energy put into thrust as possible. So at supersonic speeds, you can completely disregard drag force, because if they manage to create enough friction to propel themselves at that speed they are literally going to dig DOWN into the ground if they lean forward. I don't care how much thrust they gain by reducing their drag coefficient; the friggin-planet-made-of-dirt-and-rock-and-friggin-trees-and-crap coefficient is higher.
kid Rock Lee at the 5th gate was supersonic 7th gate guy and 6th gate Lee are barely matching the speed of Madara while Naruto and Sasuke are easily able to keep up
We’ve known this for years. Do a theory about the low gravity of the naruto verse that allows people to stay in the air for literally minutes at a time
if he put his arms back and ran, he would probably fall to the ground, given that one of the reasons that people run like a normal human is balance, lida would probably fall flat on his face
Is no one going to talk about the OBVIOUS overlook in this theory? The fastest person in the Naruto universe was using his arms to run in this very video. 5:50
the point is to run fast enough make your hand be in air like that people try putting their hands back purposefully , that's why they get tired , ninjas are superhuman and they can run fast enough for this , thus making this run more effective this was what i thought
Recommended Theory: In Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) episode 3, Kamado Tanjiro could split a large stone just by using a single katana. Is that possible?
i think if this were to be a theory, he would calculate how strong tanjiro is and using that as a feat of strength rather than how possible it would be to actually split the rock
Depends on how sharp the sword is, how strong the sword is (shatter or not type strong), the type of rock and (as the commenter above me said) how strong Kamado Tanjiro is

after this video came out and I watched it, young me was convinced that naruto run is the best run in existence, so a few days after I watched this I actually did the naruto run one time. I was outside with one of my cousins doing tiktok at the time, and some boys were playing with a ball, playing soccer or something not quite far away, after a while one of them accidentally kicked their ball too far and then one of the boys chased it, trying to catch up to it, but my favorite dumbest cat was in the way, and young me took that personally or just thought that he attacked my cat or something so I emmidiately ran after him, ✨naruto run style✨, usually I'm not the fastest runner around, but somehow, even though he was running beside me, I was running slightly faster than him somehow, eventually he got back to his buddies so I stopped before I could hit them, and that's the end of my story, I'm pretty this just proves or at least gives more evidence to matpat's theory. As a student mechanical engineer who just finished fluid mechanics, I would like to state that I understood everything about the drag force calculations.
This was a thing I was thinking about when I was a kid. I was really loving that Cars movie and when I saw the Naruto run I thought about running like that to be fast. But then I saw the way they ran, they sometimes even teleported (not even talking about Substitution Jutsu), I was like: "Maybe they are like Lightning McQueen" . After all those videos about the run made my idea wrong after all these years you confirmed it for me. Nice knowing that.

The intro: you can wear a mask for a few darn months

the Naruto run is the best run if you want to be made fun of in school, unfortunately.
Sniff

At least Sonic has a reason for running like that, in his speeds it would be impossible to even be able to have control over your arms.
I'm also real confused how Naruto made that running style popular when Sonic had been doing first for years....
I’m pretty sure Sonic invented the run too, with the Super Peel Out in Sonic CD.
@@jamalhartley5863 ikr. He stoled my style
kid Rock Lee at the 5th gate was supersonic 7th gate guy and 6th gate Lee are barely matching the speed of Madara while Naruto and Sasuke are easily able to keep up
Your mistake is forgetting that Mat doesn't respect Sonic, so the character that actually popularized that type of run is relegated to a mere mention.

“A few months” haha funny
We’ve known this for years.
Do a theory about the low gravity of the naruto verse that allows people to stay in the air for literally minutes at a time
If you have enough strength and rate of force development to run nearly the speed of sound then you can just kick the air to stay airborne.
They move so fast that it looks like they are flying
"You can wear a mask for a few darn months"
The weebs Naruto ran here as soon as they heard.
I can confirm that this is exactly what I did
i just finished a season and got the notif haha
My guy that is you
What is that supposed to mean?
Yes, you are correct
Tenya Ida from MHA is a car in human form, and should probably start Naruto running
InDeEd
He should
Dude I never thought of that. He was born just for that
if he put his arms back and ran, he would probably fall to the ground, given that one of the reasons that people run like a normal human is balance, lida would probably fall flat on his face
Yep
"You can wear a mask for a few months."
More like "you can wear a mask for 20 minutes occasionally for a few months."
Or never leave your house and never wear a mask
I wear mine more than 10 hours a day, every day and have done so for 4 months so far. Yeah, i can wear a mask for a few months, absolutely.
Where I live, wearing masks is mandatory in public places. Specifically since today
Is no one going to talk about the OBVIOUS overlook in this theory? The fastest person in the Naruto universe was using his arms to run in this very video.
5:50
the point is to run fast enough make your hand be in air like that
people try putting their hands back purposefully , that's why they get tired ,
ninjas are superhuman and they can run fast enough for this , thus making this run more effective
this was what i thought

In Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) episode 3, Kamado Tanjiro could split a large stone just by using a single katana. Is that possible?
i think if this were to be a theory, he would calculate how strong tanjiro is and using that as a feat of strength rather than how possible it would be to actually split the rock
Depends on how sharp the sword is, how strong the sword is (shatter or not type strong), the type of rock and (as the commenter above me said) how strong Kamado Tanjiro is
Stupid weebs, just kidding anime epic BUT anime pfps are cringey af it looks so dumb
Ask austin about it
Depends on what type of stone it is and if he hit it directly on a fault or crack.

@@SA80TAGE This virus is called SARS-CoV2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), nicknamed CoViD19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) and is a coronavirus, named for the shape of the individual viruses resembling the corona of the sun. You could say that coronaviruses have been around for a while but not SARS-COV2; doing so would be like saying that ebola has existed for a long time because filamentous viruses have been around basically forever. This is a case of getting the media name, coronavirus, confused with the name describing the shape of this type of virus, also coronavirus.

came here so i could find a comment like this and post it to r/youngpeopleyoutube thanks for le karma
after this video came out and I watched it, young me was convinced that naruto run is the best run in existence, so a few days after I watched this I actually did the naruto run one time.

Karen: *I have a confession to make*
What do you have to confess, you anti-vaxx goomba?
Matpat can you do a video on the optimal way to jump without facing as much pressure, drag, and also whats the optimal jumping height
I remember someone did an experiment at a con with this
They found that if you aren’t really good at running ie are not athletic then yes the run works, but if you are an actual runner then the run is less effective.
I remember that video too :) 1:53 the third guy here was the person who made the video
Steven Xiao knew other people had to have seen it
It was really interesting to see how those people ran, that and buff psyduck.

There is an interview on Asian Boss with a former ninja trainee from Japan. He explained that this run is actually the way he learned to run as a ninja. You fall forward to save more energy instead of pushing yourself to the front. The arms are not so important if I remember correctly.
Yeah from what i saw his hands are just slightly behind him
Actually most of the time his hand holds his sword and the other holds the waist
“You can where a mask for a few darn months” 10 months later mask restrictions are slowly lifting.
As a student mechanical engineer who just finished fluid mechanics, I would like to state that I understood everything about the drag force calculations.
Good job!
I understanded that too except for the coefficent part, even if I'm just at the third year of IT and I have 5 (equivalent to an E) in Physics XD
In one of the episodes Naruto runs so fast that it dislocated his shoulder and Hinata had to gentle fist it back.
