Im so thankful for the years of great content Mat has given us. So proud of the way he has represented folks from North East Ohio over the years.
Frieza didn't know how much time it would take for the planet to explode, he just threw out some random number of minutes to put the pressure on Goku. If he really wanted to, there would've been nothing stopping him from blowing up the planet for real then and there with a second energy blast (or retreat into outer space), but he chose not to because his ego wouldn't allow it. When he made the 5-minute bluff, he still had his 100% power form to resort to to put up a better fight against Goku. He was probably banking on beating Goku with his full power form and then getting out before the planet would explode, instead of getting caught in the blast in mid-battle.
It's probably already been mentioned but the Tournament of Power was meant to be about 48 minutes, but it spanned a few dozen episodes in DB Super as well. Basically, how time is said to elapse in the series is obviously not equivalent to how fast or slow time would pass for us in real life.
That one DM I knew that insisted that talking, even whispering, completely breaks any stealth roll and you must roll again after talking. Man was that an unpleasant event.
Actually, the tournament of power can have multiple episodes being played simultaneously and it does roughly line up with the 48 minute time frame given. Any discrepancies can usually be explained by the fact that, by the time the tournament of power starts, Goku is able to move at quintillions of times the speed of light without even needing to transform at all. So what we see is, as that Seththeprogrammer clip said, slowed down for viewing. It’s even incorporated into the show with the god pad that Zeno uses during the tournament that allows him to watch it like a video and slow down or speed up the playback and rewind/ fast forward it. After all, the whole thing was ultimately set up just to entertain Zeno.
I think a lot of the fights shown were all happening at roughly the same time. I watched a youtube edit of the tournament of power with all the fights happening in real time and it was roughly just about 48 minutes in length.
Wasn't it dirty when cell was clashing with gohan he vegeta shots a ki blast in cells back as he's clashing thats no honor and i thought warriors had honor
So, Frieza saying it takes 5 minutes is just him causing enough mental stress to Goku to force him to try to mess up? That's a really good strategy actually! You essentially regain momentum from your mistake by explaining the enemy has almost no time before losing to you anyway.
Nah it was only 5 minutes. Five Human minutes. These guys are moving at faster than light speeds so what they can do within five minutes is just so much more
@@crazeay3800 But don't forget the 35 minutes of talking no character in the series has been shown to speak anywhere near fast enough to fit all the fighting even at light speeds with all that talking, so while they may be fighting a light speeds that doesn't change that it took longer then 5 minutes for the planet to explode.
I think its hilarious how in that 5 minutes, Goku still let Frieza power up to near 100%, gave him energy out of pity and still needed to find Frieza's ship
Or thinking. Jesus, anime characters think entire scientific papers as 5 minutes pass around them. There are exceptions like Legoshi from Beastarts though.
This is probably the most logical and well rationalized concept for this heavily berated scene from DBZ. Everyone makes fun of how long that fight got dragged out for. Deep diving into Frieza's character and fighting history even goes an incredibly long way toward proving this idea. I really can't find any faults with it and so this is now my reasoning as well for explaining the incontinuity of what was said in the anime. Other previous reasons I used was that everything was happening faster than the show was portraying (as mentioned in the episode) or that different beings and races had different measurements for time. But even those were just a stretch to put logic to something that just didn't make sense. So thank you for this very well laid out analysis that truly does explain everything in a nice neat package. Awesome job MatPat
exactly but what the heck lol? i thought everyone got this. they were obviously moving at light speeds or faster than light speeds at most. how did people think this was a mistake
Also don't forget that toriyama was heavily influenced and inspired by ancient Chinese history and buddhism, so this theory is actually quite reasonable.
Where I don't agree with Matpat, is that Goku tells Freeza (while he's powering up to 100%) that he (Freeza) must really want to try out that ultimate form of his against the Super Saiyan, otherwise he would have just thrown another death ball into the crater he'd made into Namek. Freeza smirks at that and keep powering up. The frost demon indeed miscalculated when he threw the first death ball, but that could have been rectified immediately; instead, he decides to take on Son Goku in his "big muscles" form, that he and Frost try on again during the Tournament of Power.
I like the DBZA explanation. Frieza doesn't know what a minute is. Why would he? He's an alien that can destroy anyone he's ever met if he wants so what he says sorta goes. It is a mad king situation, no one challenges him so he thinks he knows everything.
If Frieza doesn’t know what a minute is, then how would he even know to say 5 minutes 🤡 why wouldn't he just say something like "the planet will explode soon" the fact the he specifically chose to say five minutes means he obviously knows what it is
I always liked to think Frieza intentionally decided not to blow up namek instantaneously due to acceptepting Goku's challenge but wanted it inevitably destroyed Incase he failed

I will say that Goku using Frieza's inability to sense ki against him is one of my favorite moments. When he blows up a dust cloud to make Frieza dodge up into his attack it's pretty smart.
goku's actually really smart, its just he's more fighting smart rather than book smart like bulma. He's a master martial artist who can adapt on the fly and trick his opponents, such as when he tricked cell into believing he was going to fire down, only to use instant transmission and blow up cell from underneath where his guard would be at its lowest.
Fun fact, Freiza’s race are powerful to the point where the forms they use are actually to nerf themselves so that they don’t accidentally destroy planets and what not
I should point out that Frieza's 5 minutes line does occur in the original manga in Chapter 126: The End of Namek?, so it is manga accurate information (unlike OVER 9000 which is actually OVER 8000 in the original manga & Japanese dub)! Also, Frieza was aware of the Super Saiyan God legend in addition to Super Saiyan, according to Goku's Dragon Ball Minus retconned origins which were later adapted into DBS: Broly!
A Dragonball Z theory? YES PLEASE. And this is actually a really interesting interpretation of why Frieza says 5 minutes. He truly is a very good fighter/tactician and would plant seeds of doubt after having a plan possibly uncovered. And despite all the flack the Frieza v Goku fight gets, it really is one of the best dragonball fights for both the moves and techniques used as well as how long it lasts for. It feels like a war and it's mostly just 2 guys fighting.
I thought this was going to be a video about relativity and how Frieza, a being who regularly travels between planets at what must be incredible speeds, would experience time in a significantly different way and thus have a problem estimating durations since he doesn't tend to stay in one place very long.

It’s just because the original Z anime had super slow pacing, having to animate a 20 minute episode for each 12 page chapter. If you read the manga it’s much more believable.
In the games it's suggested by a few characters, specifically by cooler (yes I know both of those things, arent, cannon) that Frieza was subconsciously scared that he would die in the explosion, which makes a lot of sense, he was facing his greatest fear, the reason he truly eradicated an entire race that served him very well, the only power he had ever feared from another mortal
He was scared and he did hold back with Namek. We saw him instantly destroy Planet Vegeta and Planet Earth with an attack. When the planet doesn’t blow, he claims he _pulled the reigns a bit too hard on that one._ Reigns, as in what we use to control animals. As in, he pulled back on the power too much.
@@captainbadassitude1845 Yep. And when you consider that he effortlessly blew up Planet Vegeta in his first form, the fact that he couldn't make Namek explode in his final form (even with it's density) must mean he held back a MAJOR amount of power. @@DLxxx remember, planet vegeta has 10x the gravity of earth and frieza managed to blow it up with a finger in his first form from outside its atmosphere, and his first form roughly 240x weaker than his final form. If first form frieza could blow up planet vegeta with a finger from outerspace, final form frieza could've easily blown up namek without sacrificing any power if he really wanted to.

There is an explanation for that one. Look up the 48 minutes of tournament of power and it is very close to the actual 48

Even simpler: Five minutes was an estimate, not a guarantee.
Don't forget that the tournament of power was 48 minutes and lasted 34 episodes.
Bro that's 14 hours
Tbf, it covered multiple fights happening at the same time. So maybe 48 mins is roughly right. Also, I think it covered some backstories
@@herrdoktornapy6835 its exactly right the gods exactly sevt the time up its all just happening at the speed of light

So, Frieza saying it takes 5 minutes is just him causing enough mental stress to Goku to force him to try to mess up? That's a really good strategy actually! You essentially regain momentum from your mistake by explaining the enemy has almost no time before losing to you anyway.

This actually made me gain more of an appreciation for Frieza as a villain.
Nah man, the anime just caught up to the manga, so Toei had to draw out the arc. And that's a fact.
I thought everyone should get used to anime time already since JOJO has been a big thing for a while.
exactly but what the heck lol? i thought everyone got this. they were obviously moving at light speeds or faster than light speeds at most. how did people think this was a mistake

To be fair - Goku's power passed both 8 and 9 thousand before they broke the scouters.

If first form frieza could blow up planet vegeta with a finger from outerspace, final form frieza could've easily blown up namek without sacrificing any power if he really wanted to.

Oda: write that down. WRITE THAT DOWN!
ngl, the anime kinda drags out the fights.
That's why the manga is always better!
That makes so much more sense. This way their dialogue doesn’t sound like a bunch of irritated chipmunks in real time. That idea kinda bothered me.

Tournament of Power Frieza: *excuse you?*
Dying reset his intelligence score XD
He did big brain frost
Ummm do you not remember when Frieza’s dumbass almost got himself killed by Toppo’s hakai? Or when he threw the energy ball at Toppo only for Toppo to body him into unconsciousness?
What about when Frieza sneak attacked Jiren while all Goku and Vegeta were hurt? Then he charges Jiren with Gold form and gets yeeted away like a fly?
Frieza didn’t get any smarter in the ToP
@M Billa “fIrSt oF aLl” your argument has no standing. How about you provide back up to your claims instead of just repeating what was already said?
@M Billa thanks for proving my point: “Frieza didn’t get any smarter during the ToP”
I actually really like your ideas here. The only wrench I'd throw at it, is if it's correct, I think Goku would have had said something to Frieza along the lines of "boy this sure is a long 5 minutes". Cause he did poke at him a bit in that fight.
