  • First Ice Ontario Fishing GIANT Splake Trout 2023-2024
    In the newest episode of The Average Joes Fishing Show, your buddies Brendan and Lyle ventured into the Mountains of the Ottawa Valley in search of some early first ice. After lake option 1 didn't pan out, option 2 was where the lads headed. Once the grueling climb to the lake was complete, the setup began and the fish were very cooperative. Between 7am-12pm, 18 fish were welcomed to the top of the ice. The trip was highlighted by a beautiful holdover Male Splake that was 24"x13" in size. (A little over 5lbs). It was a beautiful day to get out and scratch that first ice itch we have all been feeling now that the cold weather is here and the fluffy white stuff is starting to accumulate on the ground. I know splake have the forked tail and brookies have a square tail, but I thought splake did not have the blue halo around the red spots. That beauty you caught had the blue halos and the forked tail. Splookie?

    • @TheAverageJoesFishingShow
      @TheAverageJoesFishingShow  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Splake will still have blue halos when they’re coloured up like he was in the spawning phase, but they’re not the “True” blue halos Brookies have. They’re nowhere near as prominent or brightly coloured. I actually posted a video discussing the differences in the two after all the comments I got regarding this subject. If you’d like, check it out! I discuss this subject extensively 😁

      @TheAverageJoesFishingShow nice! I tried it twice last year but there was so much slush on the ice I couldn't set up where I wanted to. Our lakes have 5-7" of clear ice now. We have hardly any snow! Very rare for NW Ontario.

    Wow, those are some nice looking Splake, such a beautiful fish! My in-laws live in the Ottawa Valley, so definitely have to get out and try this season. Just wondering, if you guys have any tips on what stocked lakes to try? I see some lakes are stocked every year, and some every other year. I also see some are stocked more heavily with more than 1,000 per year, and some are stocked with less than 1,000 per year. Does stocking quantity and how often the lake is stocked matter? Thanks!

    • @TheAverageJoesFishingShow
      @TheAverageJoesFishingShow  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Great Questions Adrian! We don’t name drop lakes, we believe that if you recognize it from the video, then all the power to you to fish it. The internet is a dangerous place for wrecking lakes if the names are shared.
      That being said, in my experience it really depends on what you’re looking for from a trip experience…
      If you want a fun day with lots of bites and numbers of fish, go to a lake stocked this year. Like in this video. That’s a good way to ensure more quantity. You still will have a chance at holdover fish, but odds are lower you’ll get them because small fish will be biting most of the time.
      If you’re looking for bigger sized fish, go to a lake stocked the year before. This will ensure any fish are holdovers and will be a year bigger. That way you know every bite will be a decent fish.
      If you’re looking for giants, go to lakes that the regular fishermen wouldn’t venture into. Target lakes hard to access, and with lower stocking numbers… I say low stocking numbers because a lot of times these lakes get overlooked and neglected. People see one lake with 3000 fish stocked every other year, and a smaller lake beside it stocked with 300 every year. 95% of guys will fish the lake stocked with 3000, because they think it ups their odds. They’re not wrong, but they’re also normally happy with any fish, and aren’t targeting the really big ones exclusively.
      Generally lakes stocked heavier, are bigger and also get more fishing pressure. Stay away from the people and you’ll find more fish!
      Hope this helps bud and hopefully you subscribed and will share our content with your friends! We appreciate the comment!
