Beautiful Bible, but should we not be recommending the Orthodox Study Bible for an English Translation for our Orthodox brethern? That bible you have there isn't even the correct Old Testament Canon. The Orthodox Study Bible is stunning too and has beautful Icons and explanations of major doctrines throughout.
I'd agree with Bojan here that it's not bad to have a good translation (OSB) but also a beautiful translation. The KJV might be translated to favor some Protestant teachings and its canon is different, but its language is beautiful.
@@tharos Yes I am trying to be reasonable, so I'll admit that the New Testament in the OSB is just the NKJV anyway, but the Old Testament is the Septuagint which is what Christ and the Apostles mostly quoted. So it is important that the OSB be our primary English Bible and not Protestant bibles based on the masoretic text with a smaller canon.
@@xpictos777 The reality is that, to understand any translation of the bible, you need to have multiple, and you should probably work on Greek, and if you're lucky Hebrew. Fine theological points are almost never settled by looking at a particular translation, but by appeals to historical continuity and reconstructions of the original Greek anyways. So, who cares. Have a hundred Bibles and use em all. Leaving out parts of the canon is also not that harmful--it leaves things out but doesn't put in a condemnation of them. I like the OSB, but really don't use it much, because I find the ESV paired with an interlinear to give me the most clear and simple readings. And when I don't understand something, a translation isn't gonna settle it--historical research will.

There is the “Orthodox Study Bible” which uses the NKJV as it base and adds/alters from the Septuagint were the Masoretic text is incomplete or incorrect.
It's difficult to find the full Greek Bible in English, and the translations I found were just the Septuagint w/o the New Testament. Incidentally, I've noticed that a lot of the new Catholic Bibles are now Protestant translations w/ the deutercanonical books added. I thought this was odd. Any thoughts on this?
I think it is also a strength when speaking to Protestants. We are not affraid of "their bible" because we gave them the bible in the first place. We're not like JW or Mormons where we have to push our own translations to support our dogmas. The Church came before the bible and so we are not affraid of any text.

I used to own about 10 Bibles on more and my mother was helping me pack to move years ago and she asked to me what are you doing collecting Bibles?! Now I just have one and I want the beautiful one as well the one I have is my grandmother's. My evil grandmother!

Yeah, man. There is study bible called Studijska Biblija translated by Dr. Lujo Bakotic. It is out of print and you can only find it at sites like kupindo.com It does not have all the orthodox books, but it's the only study bible I have found in serbian. Cheers mate!
Beautiful yes, but if you want an English version written in beautiful old English, I think the Douay Reims 1582 (as tidied up by bishop Challoner 1750s) is far superior. It keeps the traditional Septuagint numbering of the Psalms and does not have the Protestant 'heresies' of deliberately mistranslating 'full of grace' to 'highly favoured' in Luke 1:28 or the somewhat 'prosperity Gospel' rendering of psalm 143 (144) that all the Protestants use and which bears no resemblance to any of the ancient texts. There may even be a case of anti-Catholic prejudice amongst the Orthodox for ignoring the Douay Reims, in the same way that much of the calendar nonsense is simply anti-Catholic prejudice. Also, if I read either my Serbian or Romanian language Orthodox bibles, the Douay comes closer than other English versions to what they are saying when I need help translating, which is very often!
The DR is a translation of the Vulgate. (Full disclosure, when I was baptized Catholic in my 20s, I took St Jerome for my patron.) Therefore, while psalm numbering remains the same, and I personally love the DR, a lot of Orthodox (Full disclosure, I was chrismated into the EOC in my 40s, I think my Chrism Patron should be obvious) look askance at it because it is not a direct translation from Greek to English, insisting that it drifts more into translational error. I dont know any Orthodox who oppose it because it is Catholic. It is, after all, an English translation of a Latin translation made by a deeply loved and respected Orthodox Saint.

The Bible includes footnotes that are helpful for people to understand the text. There's also the Revised Standard Version, which is also popular because it's available with the full Orthodox canon. It's basically an update of the King James Version. Look for the "Oxford Annotated Bible" with the Revised Standard Version ( *not* the _New_ Revised Standard Version). I ordered one at an online thrift store for about $10. Besides those two, the normal New King James Version and the English Standard Version are decent. Edit: Also, if you're willing to buy two different books, I would reccomend buying the "Lexham English Septuagint" for the Old Testament, and the "Eastern/Greek Orthodox Bible" for the New Testament.
