In Living Color was unlike anything else on tv at the time. Every cast member was hilarious and they managed to create very iconic characters. We watched every Sunday night and Monday at school all the kids would quite the show and retell the skits. It was a great time 😊
I was just out of high school when this came out, and I had many friends, all races, genders, all sorts of backgrounds. We were an eclectic bunch. We watched this show without prejudice. No one got their feelings hurt or felt it was racial or inappropriate. We could all laugh and enjoy the comedy and still love one another without race or sexual orientation be brought up or made to feel something was bad. It was nothing like now where all people do is point out where we should see injustices and are lead to feel bad about it. Im so glad I came up during the 80's and 90's where itvwas relaxed and being woke wasnt constantly being pushed on us. I can't speak for everyone because everyone wasn't above and beyond woke like me and my friends. But in my circle, day and bubble we just accepted everything with love and understanding. Laugh!!! Enjoy the humor. Just be a good person and accept people and be above issues that are oppressive when they don't have to be.
I was in the Navy in Jacksonville Fl. and living in the barracks. The lounge was packed every week when "In Living Color" aired. They made fun of everyone and it was hilarious. Sad that a show like this could never be made today as someone would get their feelings hurt. Amazing writing, casting (watch any episode with 'Wanda'), the Fly Girls (an unknown Jennifer Lopez was a dancer), an unknown Jim Carey, etc.
lol, In Living Color was the HOTTEST thing on tv at it's time. Everyone watched it,.... Black, White, Latino, Asian, gay, straight, male, female, old, and young,... it didn't matter. It was groundbreaking, and I loved it.
In living color was comedic genius then and now. The entire cast where amazing on the show. This was some of the greatest TV ever made. If you didn’t watch this show and Def Comedy Jams back then you didn’t appreciate comedy or comedians that set the paths for so many others.
I was in HS in the 90s and people were quoting this sketch giving 2 snaps in Z formation. The joke is they hate any movie with "woman" in the title, or that feature women over men.
This show was just GREAT and AMAZING comedy! They wrote their own stuff and made their own characters! Pushed the limits of the network but people just laughed and didn't get upset! Was the best time! None of these shows would air today which is sad... Peoples "feels" have ruined comedy! Wish someday we can go back to laughing again! Great reactions as always!
You might actually like the Die Hard franchise. I'm not a huge action film guy, but lil' Bruce Willis never disappoints. Although, I prefer Fifth Element, because I'm a geek, and Leeloo was adorable. "Big baada boom!" 🥰
The show poked fun at everything. It was art imitating life. No one took the show seriously. I'm glad you're reacting to this. Damian Wayne and David Allen Grier are brilliant actors/ comedians, in my opinion. The snap variations get me every time.
This was my dad's favorite show when I was a kid, and thankfully my parents allowed me to watch it. Damon Wayans was a superstar back then. People talk about Jim Carrey and Jaime Foxx being on the show, but at the time, Damon was definitely the biggest name.
Keenen Ivory Wayans created, wrote and starred Like the cast of SNL wrote theirs, the cast on this probably wrote David Alan Grier, Damon Wayans wrote these together.Damon said "Drop the soap I'll get it"
“Touch me in the morning and just walk away” are actually lyrics to a song. I believe it’s one of Diana Ross’s songs. there are three die hard movies I love this show it’s so funny and especially the skit. One of my favorites is homey, D clown. His tag was Homey Don’t Play That. And he hits people with s sock filled with with other socks or something.
pretty sure he said "drop the soap I'll get it" in a male prison . . . Idea when a sketch names a movie you never heard of might look it up they are making references to well known movies..
You need to watch some entire episodes of In Living Color.. it launched sooo many people into super stardom…Jamie Fox,Jim Carrey even JLo was one of the Fly Girls, the dance troupe on the show… great characters,Homey the Clown,Fire Marshall Bill,The homeless guy,Wanda the ugly woman….
I was in HS in the early 90s, which was also during the first Gulf War. My brother got ahold of recordings of a pirate radio show with comedy songs about the enemy to bolster our military's morale. In the breaks between songs they had soundbites from TV shows, and I remember 3 soundbites from Men on Film. "Don't tempt my tummy with the taste of Nut's & Honey", "Pilot to copilot we goin down in flames", & "Two snaps, a twist, & a kiss" were all used. So yeah, it was well known. In Living Color had quite a few popular skits, Homey D Clown, Fire Marshall Bill, Head Detective, Wanda, Miss Jenkins, etc. It also launched the careers of Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Damon Wayans, David Alan Grier, Tommy Davidson, & Jennifer Lopez (she was one of the Fly Girls that did dance routines into the commercial breaks).
Darling. Why did they hate Pretty Woman? Just check the title lol. They hated any female-centered chick flick! As I've said before, these sketches worked because, stereotypical as it was, it was celebratory... not derogatory. This probably wouldn't fly today because certain groups would be calling to boycott the network for "promoting gay stuff"
I think this sketch wouldn't fly because it would simply offend more people. On the one hand you'd have the people you mentioned who'd say that this was gay indoctrination because any gay characters existing is evil and especially bad if they are proud and charismatic. On the other hand you'd have people who don't like stereotypes (even really obviously absurd ones like these) being perpetuated (these are the typical PC folks and they definitely existed in the 90s.) And then you'd have people arguing that these stereotypes are only okay if done by actual gay actors and writers (these are the "stay in your lane" folks.) Then you'd have the people arguing that no gay character (comedic or otherwise) should be played by a cis het person. While I understand that many LGBT actors have historically been ignored in exchange for cis het actors playing LGBT roles, this is one where I think some well meaning people can take it too far. At some point we have to loosen up and also recall that acting itself requires becoming something you aren't. Let's make sure our casting pools are more diverse but people should be allowed to play characters that don't match their demographics, especially with something lighthearted like this.
That drop the soap comment refers to the old saying Don't drop the soap ,when you're in prison. If you bend over to get it some man is going to get you! (I put that as nicely as I could could)
No worries Britt, as a Gen X I haven't seen Ghost, Die Hard, etc. Catching up on a lot of things I didn't have time for when I was younger. I did watch In Living Color every week, and I died laughing 😂 There was no extreme sensitivity to the content, I was funny and I laughed. I enjoyed watching so many of the cast become talents of their own in later years.
If you want to know how the reception was for this show, just listen to the audience. There was no laugh track, and the audience was live. We loved every minute of this show. I haven't seen anyone react to this, but on In Living Color Kim Wayans did a character pretty frequently call Benita Butrell where she was in different situations where she talked to the camera and would acknowledge people she knew in her neighborhood at the same time. She would also defend a little old lady in the neighborhood called Ms. Jenkins. She was on the show dozens of times and hilarious every time. Check in out.
This was a massively popular show. Nobody cares about Arnold’s life then or now. Comedy and satire is a necessary relief from life struggles. It seems many people who are constantly offended are attention seekers
Lol, there was a commercial in the 90's for the cereal Nuts N Honey. The humor in it is when the one spouse saw them eating it they asked, what you eating. They would say the name of the cereal, but the other spouse thought they said nothing honey. Then they would be like, ok, whatever, if you don't want to tell me.
This show pushed more boundaries than snl but everyone just laughed accepted it and the next day you repeated the jokes with everyone. When they did the dirty dozens skits the next day was filled with yo momma battles
In Living Color was a blast too watch, had me in stitches from beginning to end, all the crazy characters were fun too watch. That was fun comedy, not much of that today unfortunately.
Its deeper than that. For decades there have been rumors that Arnold S. is bisexual. That when he came to the US he was kept by the publisher of the top BB magazine the 3:40
Always loved their skits. Did you see “ the massage therapist “ and the dating game from in living color? It’s hilarious. People didn’t get offended back then. The skits are online.
Britt, in case you haven't noticed these two tended to hate movies about or starring females. Hence them hating 'Betsy's Wedding' and 'Pretty Woman'. I never figured out why though. 🤔🤔😋😋
This segment used to crack me up. It still does! A good "drop the soap" joke is out of bounds now? The "Die Hard" franchise was Bruce Willis, and that first movie is the best Christmas movie of all time.
Oh, back in my early 90s, I was a “wet behind the ears” young. 14yrs old. I had a strict upbringing too. I had to ask friends to record them on VHS so I could sneak in viewings at every chance. 😂 still makes me laugh. Thanks again for going down this rabbit hole! You are a blessing✌🏻
They wrote it, with contributions from the other cast, and half a dozen writers that wrote but were never seen on screen. Keenen wrote/produced. If I recall, Damon had the original idea for this and DAG loved the idea and they bounced ideas around until it became reality.
I have not seen this in ages! Thank you. Loved it! The Wayans wrote all this material! And outrage? Yeah, if the power was out and we missed it (my family used to watch this every week, and no one got offended. We laughed until it hurt!)
As people have said, there was nothing else like this show when it was on. Sure, there was SNL, but they weren’t doing the same thing. As to its reception…people laughed their asses off. It didn’t matter your race, everyone loved this show. People weren’t whiny crybabies looking for a reason to be offended. If you didn’t like something, you *gasp* changed the channel. Gen X didn’t expect everyone to cater to their feelings. Generally speaking, we were outright told “no one gives a damn about your feelings or anyone else’s.” We weren’t weak.
48 Hours was Eddie Murphy's first real movie (not a comedy special). He was a convict pulled out of prison to help track down a member of his old crew. Another 48 hours was the sequel. Die Hard isn't just a movie. It's still referenced in things today. It's shorthand for other movie plots. "This is Die Hard , but on a boat." It was also Alan Rickman's first movie, as well as one of the great debates of our time. Is it or is it not a Christmas Movie? As far as what was and wasn't allowed, if you're really curious about the history of it, start with the Hayes Code in movies that ran from the 1930's to the late 1960's. Basically, anything that even remotely alluded to biology was not allowed. Married couples had to sleep in separate beds, even if the actors were really husband and wife (I Love Lucy). They couldn't say "pregnant" on the air. Kisses couldn't last longer than 3 seconds, "infidelity" meant going out to dinner with someone not a spouse because that was as far as human interaction can go. Violating the code meant the movie would get blacklisted across the country. Then, in the late 1960's some studios decided to hell with the code, and a lot of theaters joined them. The code wend way and by the 1980's just about every movie had nudity in it whether it made sense or not. Studios kept pushing the line back until someone finally crossed it, then they'd start pushing it again. This kept going until around the mid-90's and a little into the 2000's with Family Guy. If you want to see where all these "irreverant" TV shows got their start, chekc out clips from All in the Family, and The Jeffersons. Both were hugely popular, and both would have a hard time gettnig past the gatekeepers today. They took pride in being offensive, but they did it for a reason, not just to be crude.
There were supposed to be 6 Die Hard movies but the six one was canceled. The fifth installment was released back in 2013. So no that I heard movies are not still being made.
I was in elementary school when this came out one of the girls in my class mom tried to get all the parents to stop us from watching it because she didn’t want her daughter hearing us talk about it
It was on fox network tv station that was trying to compete with abc, nbc, and cbs so most of the programs were edgy like this and married with children during that time period these were the two best shows on TV also during one skit Damons character turns straight
They hate any movies that star women And coming out of the closet refers to being gay Back then we just said the gay men were still hiding in the closet they need to come out
Any title they mention that has either mainly women or a female oriented title like "Pretty Woman,", they say 'hated it" ...because they prefer the male orienteers movies (for reasons you can probably already guess). 🙂
Every gay man loved this skit! There were gay bars that would show it and they would be packed. These two characters are a wonderful part of real gay culture - something the Neo-Marxists alphabet squad will never understand or appreciate because their too busy being ignorant. As a gay man I love each of their skits!! There was never any disrespect it was all respectful fun about cherishing our differences.
Die Hard is a series of movies starring Bruce Willis. There are 5 movies and the series is done. Mission Impossible is a Tom Cruise series. That series is still going. There are 7 movies so far with an 8th on the way.
You mentioned Die Hard, l have enjoyed that franchise alot. Some are better than others but Bruce Willis dry humor and action makes them worth watching.
She makes a point when talking about women watching ANYTHING, on television. I've noticed that they'll think nothing of asking some mundane questions or making some unrelated statements during a TV show or movie BUT, when a commercial comes on . . . all lips are "zipped" and you can't pry their eyes away, especially if it's for cosmetics. GOD FORBID you choose that time to ASK THEM a question. . . . .
As a Gen Xer...this show was received well...we loved it and it was cutting edge.
Facts!!!!
In the 90’s this show wasn’t censored. That’ll tell you what you need to know.
In Living Color was unlike anything else on tv at the time. Every cast member was hilarious and they managed to create very iconic characters. We watched every Sunday night and Monday at school all the kids would quite the show and retell the skits. It was a great time 😊
no, the bangs and little boop of the hat are the best thing ever
In Living Color combined with Mad TV was extremely popular, and Die Hard is the best Christmas film ever made
It’s is a Christmas movie!! I second that emotion!
The Ben Stiller Show was also a good one on Fox.
All facts and married with children all amazing shows and that Monday in school reenacting the skit's 😂
I was just out of high school when this came out, and I had many friends, all races, genders, all sorts of backgrounds. We were an eclectic bunch. We watched this show without prejudice. We saw humor for humor in the 90s we were not as easily offended as we seem to be now.

They are no woman's gay best friend, let me tell you.
This show was just GREAT and AMAZING comedy! They wrote their own stuff and made their own characters! Pushed the limits of the network but people just laughed and didn't get upset! Living Color. A testament to when comedy was outrageously funny.
You might actually like the Die Hard franchise. I'm not a huge action film guy, but lil' Bruce Willis never disappoints. Although, I prefer Fifth Element, because I'm a geek, and Leeloo was adorable. "Big baada boom!" 🥰
Great skits of theirs to watch - Homey Don't Play That, and Jim Carry as Vanilla Ice.
"Touch Me In The Morning Then Just walk Away" is a song from Diana Ross called Touch Me In The Morning.
The reason why they always said, hated it, for women’s shows and movies, because they rather watch stuff about men.
This show is where Jim Carrey got his start.
The show poked fun at everything. It was art imitating life. No one took the show seriously. I'm glad you're reacting to this. Damian Wayne and David Allen Grier are brilliant actors/ comedians, in my opinion. The snap variations get me every time.
DAG much better. But yes, watched this show in real TV time
You were wondering how it went over In the 90's, we would just laugh at it, we were not a bunch of easily offended snowflakes.
No chit and Amen!
Exactly!!!
We would also point and laugh also if it pertained to anyone in the room 😄
Exactly
We didn't even think to ask if it was offensive or appropriate. We just knew it was funny
WATCHED EVERY WEEK,,COMIC GENIUS

Those little hats are called fascinators. They are to draw attention and are an accessory. It's all a stylthing that comes and goes.
That drop the soap comment refers to the old saying Don't drop the soap ,when you're in prison. If you bend over to get it some man is going to get you! (I put that as nicely as I could could)
7:37 You’ve got to see Die Hard. It’s the best Christmas movie ever. 👍🏼
Babe they're gay jokes In 48 hours and another 48 hours are Eddie Murphy movies
No worries Britt, as a Gen X I haven't seen Ghost, Die Hard, etc. Catching up on a lot of things I didn't have time for when I was younger. I did watch In Living Color every week, and I died laughing 😂 There was no extreme sensitivity to the content, I was funny and I laughed. I think the thought at the time was "we kid because we care". If any group is off limits to comedy, that puts them in an out group. It's "othering".
Yes, the comedians on this show, and on SNL, are coming up with most of the bits, and the writers clean them up.
Ahhh the good ole days, In Living Color, Mad TV, Married with Children etc, Love your reactions, your animated with an infectious smile
Gotta react to Men on cooking. Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Funniest of all of them.
If you want to know how the reception was for this show, just listen to the audience. There was no laugh track, and the audience was live. We loved every minute of this show. Damon wrote the entire skit improv from David.
It's the perfect for these to they knock it out the
Park all the time.
This was a massively popular show. Nobody cares about Arnold’s life then or now. Comedy and satire is a necessary relief from life struggles. It seems many people who are constantly offended are attention seekers

Men on books. " Little women" .... Hated it. You've got a good channel Like your reaction And your calming voice.
2 snaps and a twist was a legendary quote that lived in the zeitgeist for years
They all put in that's why this show was so gr8
“Sweaty mens…”
This show pushed more boundaries than snl but everyone just laughed accepted it and the next day you repeated the jokes with everyone. When they did the dirty dozens skits the next day was filled with yo momma battles
They hated Pretty Woman because it wasn’t focused on attractive men.
In Living Color was a blast too watch, had me in stitches from beginning to end, all the crazy characters were fun too watch. That was fun comedy, not much of that today unfortunately.
Its deeper than that. For decades there have been rumors that Arnold S. is bisexual. That when he came to the US he was kept by the publisher of the top BB magazine the 3:40
We loved this show and the actors in everything they did❤
I recommend Mo Better Blues Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, and Samuel L Jackson are in the movie!
They were on channel 62 "public access"
This segment used to crack me up. It still does! A good "drop the soap" joke is out of bounds now? The "Die Hard" franchise was Bruce Willis, and that first movie is the best Christmas movie of all time.
Funniest comedy show ever. I couldn’t wait for this to come in every week. Please do more In Living color reacts. So much to pull from.
Die Hard, Tom Cruise Franchise.......oh lord. There are 5 movies total.
5:06 He says" Oooh Drop the soap, I'll get it!"

The Wayns Brothers wrote most of the sketches with alot of input from the other cast members in the early years of the show.
In Living Color was "Much Watch TV"
In living colour was such a amazing show.
I have not seen this in ages! Thank you.
Loved it!
The Wayans wrote all this material!
And outrage? Yeah, if the power was out and we missed it (my family used to watch this every week, and no one got offended. We laughed until it hurt!)
This show and MadTV were the best. We all loved them.
You never saw Another 48 Hrs! OMG!
5:05 He said, "Ooh, drop the soap, I'll get it." Not sure why soap was edited there as it isn't a curse word.
In Living Color, Arsenio Hall Show, Simpsons, Married With Children, Twin Peaks… great tv back then
As people have said, there was nothing else like this show when it was on. Sure, there was SNL, but they weren’t doing the same thing. As to its reception…people laughed their asses off. 48 Hours was the first movie I saw in a theater. I was 4, being babysat by my 16 and 17 year old uncles.
Fox was so great back then. The Simpsons, In Living Color, Married with Children...
I agree with you about movies. I can’t make a commitment to sit in one place for two hours. Life moves too fast to do that.
Men on fitness may have been one of their best versions.
There are two more of these to watch. Men on cooking, and Men on vacation.
There were supposed to be 6 Die Hard movies but the six one was canceled. The fifth installment was released back in 2013. So no that I heard movies are not still being made.
We loved In Living Color.

2:53 But accurate....especially the past 10 years or so.
Touch me on the morning and then just walk away…lyrics from Diana Ross song Touch Me In The Morning
We loved this show when it was on. You built your schedule around it
They hate any movies that star women And coming out of the closet refers to being gay Back then we just said the gay men were still hiding in the closet they need to come out
Well since it went on for more than 5 seasons,I’ll say it was received well .
"Touch Me in the Morning." The title of a 1970's Diana Ross song.
Die Hard is a top 10 all time movie that should be see by EVERYONE!!
'' Oh who dropped the soap , I'll get it ''
Any title they mention that has either mainly women or a female oriented title like "Pretty Woman,", they say 'hated it" ...because they prefer the male orienteers movies (for reasons you can probably already guess). 🙂
People weren't offended at everything back then how they are now, so it went over great. It was all jokes and sketch and people knew it and laughed.
@5:06 “Drop the Soap I Get it”
Every gay man loved this skit!
I would of killed to be a fly on the wall of the writers room of in living color, would of been wild.
I used to love these two.
Ohhhh this brought back so many memories!! I laughed so hard back in the day and laughed so hard this time.
GOD FORBID you choose that time to ASK THEM a question. . . . .
When it first came out it was so so funny!
