  • Peter Whittle takes #SWYSI to Brighton to interview legendary columnist and author Julie Burchill, described by the Observer as "outrageously outspoken" and "usually offensive". Julie discusses her remarkable -- and remarkably controversial -- life and career, as well as her excellent new book: "Welcome to the Woke Trials: How #Identity Killed Progressive Politics".

I still hold my own political and social beliefs but I am pleased to see that our current struggles are transcendent of class, politics and background. Being the same age as Julie birchill I share that feeling of gratitude that I was born at a good time and now too long in the tooth to be bothered by today’s nonsense. As for the younger generations, they will have to suck it up or do what we did in the past and rebel against the worst excesses of ‘the establishment’ just as we did! I suspect most are too lazy / complacent to fight for their freedom of thought and conscience

What self righteous nonsense. Don't you see young people protesting? extinction rebellion comes to mind. But no, your generation don't like that.
Isn't it funny, young people are expressing freedom of thought and conscience, you call it woke and dismiss it because you don't like it.
You can say you rebelled, but your generation have become the problem. Freedom of movement, free university education, actually affordable house prices. You had all these and yet your generation have taken those opportunities away from younger people. Do you know what it's like to have to volunteer for a year to even get a job in your chosen profession? People need to rack up tens of thousands of pounds worth of debt to just get a degree or masters that your generation then denigrate and dismiss. You pulled the ladder up after yourselves and you don't like that the world has changed, leaving you behind. So spare us this self congratulating crap. What did you actually achieve?

My cousin is in his late twenties is very woke and still living with his parents. He began transitioning to female and has been treating his parents so badly that they are going to move out of their own house as they don’t want to ask him to leave. It has nothing to do with his transition, they have accepted it, but they don’t have the exact attitude and lingo that his online ‘friends’ tell him they’re supposed to, so he harangues them constantly. It’s really shocking and saddening as they are such good people and they’re afraid to say anything. So he now has a four bedroom house to himself for free. Shameful.

Incredibly honest person whose columns I have enjoyed from time to time. I like that she highlighted the notion that the woke mob are by and large silly (I would add priviliged) people who are steered by the sinister. However I have yet to be enlightened as to who are the sinister and what are they trying to achieve by this control of the population?
The methods are there to be seen e.g. control of the language, fragmentation of the population by constantly referring to the subject of race relations, sexual orientation, climate change, Brexit etc etc.
There is no doubt that we are becoming a nation of two different types of people the woke and the non woke and there could be some conflict in the future.

In the US, a sizable number, perhaps approaching a majority, of the “non-woke” are well-armed, so any real physical conflict between the “woke” and “unwoke” would be over very quickly.
On the other hand, those well-armed “non-woke” persons also tend to have libertarian “live and let live” and “rugged individualism” values, so they do not unite as willingly with one another nor press their rhetoric upon the whole of culture as stridently as the Wokies do.
If it weren’t for the inherent threat of armed revolt the Second Amendment was designed to perpetually maintain as a check against naked tyranny, America would already be lost.

@@lydiamalone1859 Exactly. How could she miss this? Expertise is diffuse amongst individuals and individuals need to have as much autonomy as natural rights (self-ownership, property rights) allow.
Nationalizing everything IS controlling people. It’s forcing them to work for the government (their betters), at gunpoint, under the assumption that the government experts can use the fruits of their labor better than they can. It’s also the tyranny of the majority (when this model exists in a democracy) and it devolves into a Victocracy (rule by the “gibs”) as we’re now seeing in the west. I like her but nationalizing everything is a horrible idea and will always result in totalitarian control for the benefit of those at the top and their buddies.

The movement hasn't changed at all. It's a myth that somehow it _was_ good and now isn't. Just because the complaints they had in the beginning had more legitimacy because society couldn't quite keep up with technological / social changes, doesn't mean they were somehow nice people - they weren't. They were ideological bigots projecting onto men and history their own prejudices. It's important to not confuse what were called at the time 'women's libbers' with feminists - though there was a lot of crossover, one group wanted social / legal change for women in certain areas, the other was an ideology (sometimes called 'Marxism in a dress'). Most of the former got on with their lives when changes were made, the latter couldn't get on with their lives, because the ideology _was_ their lives. It's a religion, and the zealots have always been steering the ship.
