Kotkin is an interesting writer but he has to make the great leap. He's saying the Democratic Party has been taken over by antidemocratic progressives, yet he can't vote Republican. For certain types of New York Jewish liberals voting Republican is like losing a limb. But for the good of the polity, and his own self-respect and consistency, he has to make that self amputation.
In the late 1950s when Eisenhower made his, "Military Industrial Complex," speech, it was the Republicans in power. The central bankers, through their agents, the British Crown, or their agents, the Jesuits, infiltrate every organization, are highly capitalized, and shout the rhetoric of the group they joined the loudest, and are tasked with gaining leadership.

Thank you for posting this. For the past month I have been reflecting on the past 2 years. This interview brings great clarity to the questions I have been asking myself. Would love to listen to these men chat with Jordan Peterson.
In about 1982, I was taking an Anatomy and Physiology course at a community college in Oakland, CA, as a prerequisite for nursing school. The instructor - Urion Gallin-Galler- told our class that he did not give any student less than a grade of C, if they earned a D or F, they would still get a C grade. I was absolutely flabbergasted! So this actually started at least 40 years ago where a student who got a D or F in ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY (of all things) would/could still be admitted to nursing school. Excuse me, but am I crazy for expecting any medical professional to have a good understanding of the human body?!? Educational standards have consistently been lowered since then and appear to have gone completely off the rails.
This gentleman made a good point that there is a alliance between the over educated and under educated. I wonder if he knows he's part of that alliance.
RE: buying a house in the regions for a 'fraction' of city houses - even they are way overpriced compared with city houses 10 years ago, and there are no jobs out there.
I live in a region, during covid house prices have risen by a third, houses are selling for $50 000 above asking price. Most of the buyers live in Melbourne.
John, Australians have mostly been willing to go along with giving up some freedoms to suppress Covid as you say but why should they from now on when the vulnerable have been able to get vaxxed? And if not ready right now, we need a date when the restrictions WILL be lifted and people should take care of themselves. btw I am old and very vulnerable but I don't want that responsibility imposed on others.
@@robynhefferan9561 Right. And I think that the bulk of vaccines has gone to where the most money is. Good example: the poor state of Mississippi in my country sort of fell by the wayside.

Keep voting for the left Joel, I guess the water isn't hot enough just yet for you to jump out. Be sure to not get boiled.
I discovered Kotkin was a fraud a while back. I listened in to see if he's changed or maybe I read him wong.Nope. He talks like a conservative but then tells us he's never voted for a Republican. That's his MO. He's still is talking white supremicist crap. He will never give Trump the credit for anything. And Trump accomplised alot.
I suspect that he just wants to be sure he makes the world safe for his daughter; he doesn’t care about others. I totally agree he should stop thinking he can be elite. His daughter might be but will probably be ashamed of him even if he doesn’t support MAGA. President Trump is not an awful human being.
I’m asked quite regularly where and how to find all these books for my personal library, my response is, from watching shows such as these. I will be purchasing a copy of this book from Mr.Kotkin.
It is rare to hear a college professor articulate so much reason, logic and common sense. 14:48 he is correct regarding the level of educational attainment, median income, family orientation and work ethic of Asian-Americans.
Re History John and Joel - instinct tells me that like the U.K., History is not a compulsory subject in Australia and the US. As Joel says, a knowledge of history keeps you humble.
"[Trump] didn't realise he wasn't in the bar in Queens talking to his friends" Joel fails to realise that Trump was talking to the people, directly, in their language. That this doesn't meet with Joel's approval says more about Joel than it does about the people or Trump. reality->perception->delusion->batShitCrazy Unlike Joel, 'the people' live between the reality and perception states. Reality is the teacher that smacks you in the face constantly. In this world, nice language is superficial, harsh truth is appreciated.
Absolutely. Trump , De Santos, etc ahead of the curve - the progressives have been using the ‘niceness’ of conservatives to push their agenda fir years
That was the one area that really disappointed me. Trump could have said things better; however, he was often misquoted or quotes were taken out of context. He wasn’t sending out dog whistles or coded messages. Also he did not organize the “attacks” on the capital. There were a lot of suspicious characters and actions involved in those activities.
19:10 these type of people you describe, I saw one today at a press conference, called Scott Morrision, telling us what freedoms the State will take from us, what actions will be mandated by the State, and how those freedoms will be returned to us as privileges.
At minute mark 20:00 it's called toll roads. We'll make driving a car so expensive we think we'll force you to give it up coz of the $$ required to drive it from A to B.
It was interesting to see the clarity of thought in what Mr Kotkin had to say, but his off-the-cuff slams against Trump are jarring. Just as one example, the charges of dog whistles, white supremacy and racism against Trump takes a fully blindered intellect to swallow. Trump won many awards from Black orgs before running for office. Trump was beloved in Black popular culture (as one example, many Rap songs celebrate Trump’s persona and success). As President, Trump pursued many policies to help the Black community. And, though indirect, the pro-America US econ policy gave a lot of Blacks good jobs and sharply increased prospects. Yet, starting from day-1 of the Trump Admin, the media repeated continuously a Big Lie of Trump hatred of Blacks. If repetition of propaganda is enough to cloud Mr Kotkin’s judgment, well, I’ll say no more. To consider Trump a paragon, sure, it’s a bit much. Not to see that he is an immense force in the correct direction calls your intellectual creds into question …. in my opinion.
Dr. Kotkin never said why he thinks that in his words "Trump is an awful human being". To label someone this way, one has to provide some evidence. Crude talk doesn't make you an awful human being.
I found him quite humorous ,but very accurate ,but crying wolf about something he voted for his whole life ,and still voting for i imagine,is as worthless as tits on a fence post.
I think that many intellectuals understand at an emotional level that they must denounce Donald Trump and populism in order to be taken seriously by their own circles. I was enjoying this interview until hearing the anti-Trump platitudes. Nevertheless, it’s worth listening to his other ideas. The topic brings back memories of the works of Marc Bloch that we read in college.
Mr. Anderson, many US citizens will not bend to diktat. I see this ending in the Balkanization of the US in a similar method as to what happened after the financial collapse of the USSR. States are separating. There is a movement in eastern Oregon to join Idaho. They are putting this on the ballot and letting people vote on the matter. This is the proper approach, let people choose! But there are many people that will not comply, will not submit, will not continue to pay taxes to a government which does not represent them and which abuses them. There is a rallying cry for us, the quote from Ayn Rand, "Who is John Galt?" Indeed.
Re: the NYT and "where the h**l was the editor" -- watch a recent interview with Bari Weiss, if you want a straightforward explanation and case study of what happened there.
At 50:45 Joel talks about a complete lack of trust in the institutions. RIGHT ON THE TARGET. At 51:40 John nails it when he says there has to be a bit of HUMILITY from these "elites" and THAT is why there is no trust in the institutions; because they have no humility and any dissenting voice is shut down. Logic, reason, and critical thinking, are foreign concepts to these people. "When you cut out a persons tongue, you are not proving that what they have to say is wrong You are merely proving that you FEAR WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY."
The Only Way back to our true Home is thru a relationship with Jesus. If you don’t have that, you are still in love with the world and are still of it and all of its snares. All the “isms” are about separation and not from a place of love. Ecc 4:1 So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had NO comforter. Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me YE can do NOTHING.
"they want national policies, they want top down policies, and they don't want the hoi polloi to get in the way" -- IOW, they want Soviet style central planning. Command and control!
This is the worst elites in world history. The entire point of elites, or at least aristocracy (and monarchy) is to represent and imbue onto society values that the plebs see as important. Its to actually have elites with skin in the game. America's elites have absolutely zero skin in the game because they're so delusional, they don't even think they're elite. Its an inversion of reality, one look at the average actor in Hollywood says it all. To them, especially the Boomers, there will forever be some "evil" right wing they're trying to fight. I heard recently journalist Michael Tracey tell of his experience going to a Juneteenth event hosted by Chuck Schumer's office where only 50 people showed up, in NYC, and he pointed out how bizarre it was that during Schumer speaking, he was telling the mainly black audience of 50 people in a public park, that they're going to "fight the power". The compounding delusions of grandeur in America never fail to shock me.
Great discussion. More of this please. I will follow Joel Kotkin's work more closely going forward. He seems to have some common sense to temper his ample intellect.
So WHY is Donald Trump an awful person? WHAT has he done that is so bad? Maybe you dont like his personality, but in fact he is known as kind and caring - despite there might be rough parts of his personality. When you say he is awful you really ought to explain yourself. Too many people get away with saying that. Prove it. What he DID for America is what counts.
@Cori's Closet Do a little work - if you're actually interested. There's a long list of incredible things Trumps has done for individuals great and small. But I doubt you care, because it's easier to hate and scream racist. Just because the media and lifers in the bureaucracy (who he was threatening to) wrote books doesn't mean they were true. Trump loves this country and despised those who were trying to destroy it - like the people you vote for.
Yes, proof is what I can see. I saw numbers accelerate for good in the country I love affecting people that I love. Talk is way too cheap. You can say he is anything you want, but analytical thinkers see the numbers and laugh at your words.
@@neilpollicino80 Trump's children seem to be well adjusted adults that truly care about him. I'm not saying that is because of is parenting, but if he was really as bad as the media claims then his children would have distanced themselves from him.

Sneaked in announcement a few days ago which is VERY worrying imo is that Lloyds Bank intend to start buying residential property... upto 50k houses. The UK build about 150 to 200k houses a year. This will drive up prices more and prevent an overdue correction imo
Many have seen this coming way, way before. From Oswald Spengler's "The Decline of the West" in 1918 to James Burnham's remarkable works "The Machiavellians" (1943), "Suicide of the West" and "The Managerial Revolution" (1941), to Howe & Strauss "The Fourth Turning" in the 90s, to Peter Turchin more recently, it all runs in cycles. This is the end of a much, much longer cycle, Kotkin isn't wrong about the return to medieval times, however, zoom out & perhaps America's constitution was built for this very outcome. A collapsing empire needs something to fall back on, or else it will end up with a split between Western & Eastern Rome, and degenerate into feudal warlords in the Western half for 1,000 more years. Except that the founding fathers came up with the solution in advance. Just adhere to its origins and the promise of America can be restored.
The realignment at 21:44 has been going on steadily since WWII, as documented by Thomas Piketty in his 2018 paper, "Brahmin Left vs Merchant Right: Rising Inequality & the Changing Structure of Political Conflict (Evidence from France, Britain and the US, 1948-2017)". He studied election results and surveys in these countries and saw similar trends in all three.

The current conservative parties are just as bad. All they conserve are leftist social policies. To resist becoming fodder to the future feudal overlords we need a complete return to traditionalism.
A fundamental problem is that all the candidates are heavily funded by corporate oligarchs. We need citizens' organizations that can raise large sums of money from a large swath of individual small donors and thus fund individual candidates without recourse to the big money donors.
@@michaels4255 as long as big business funds politicians then politicians work for... big business. The idea of democracy is that they work for their constituents, NOT the few ‘owners’ of course. A US Politician recently retired and said when he shaved every morning he asked himself ‘what are ten things I can do for my donors today’. Thus democracy is not functioning while big business is allowed to fund politicians (as can be seen as ‘the working man’ has suffered steadily reducing income for decades). So I don’t think we should try and compete with the oligarchs funding, it needs to be stopped. Step two: they have to pay some tax like the rest of us (because funnily enough they have designed the system so that they alone don’t pay any).
Very interesting discussion. I disagree with many of the political positions advanced by Joel Kotkin but he has some very worthwhile points to make. But comments like, "My great hope for Biden....." are misguided. There is little hope of anything good coming out of the Biden/Harris Administration.
Great conversation and while I agree with much of what is said in this interview, Trump was never called a racist until he became president and made enemies of both the legacy news media and many politicians. Abrasive? Yes. Racist? No.
As a populist politician, Trump panders to racists, religious bigots and anyone who can vote, to gain supporters but is he racist or religious? Probably not. That sort of issue doesn't interest him, because he is totally obsessed with gaining personal power and wealth for himself, so he and Trump Inc. can be above the law and able to make as much money as they possibly can from any immoral, unethical, crooked/criminal activity he wants to pursue. His most defining characteristic is that he seems to place no limit on how far he is willing to go, legal or illegal, to get money for himself.

The Dictatorship of the Proletariat was never a democracy in terms of social democracy or democratic socialism . There never was that kind of transfer of power - the one person-one vote type that the maneuvers of politicos in many states of the US have instituted measures to try and nullify (by giving state legislatures the power to overrule election results.)
Joel needs to get over his Trump-phobia. He confuses personality with the basic civil values that matter. It's the very elite snobbery he says he's against.
So many white liberals are confused and disoriented by the new authoritarianism of their own people that they cannot see the future and blather on about Trump being a billionaire, etc. None of that has anything to do with his ability to identify with ordinary people, something the tech and wall street oligarchs will never understand. Trump is a messenger that the ruling class needed to destroy. But the problems and pressures are continuing to grow.

That has to do with student retention = keep the tuition fees coming in.

All these discussions are very interesting and intelligent. But what should we actually do in order to prevent this slide into the abyss ?
I thoroughly enjoyed this interview myself.
Exactly; we have a diagnosis of our social ills, but no course of treatment.
I’m asked quite regularly where and how to find all these books for my personal library, my response is, from watching shows such as these. I will be purchasing a copy of this book from Mr.Kotkin.

"[Trump] didn't realise he wasn't in the bar in Queens talking to his friends" Joel fails to realise that Trump was talking to the people, directly, in their language. That this doesn't meet with Joel's approval says more about Joel than it does about the people or Trump.

Unlike Joel, 'the people' live between the reality and perception states. Reality is the teacher that smacks you in the face constantly. In this world, nice language is superficial, harsh truth is appreciated.
Yep !
I love these guys who, though they now fall into the conservative area, won’t admit it; they cannot bare to give up the liberal label.

At 51:40 John nails it when he says there has to be a bit of HUMILITY from these "elites" and THAT is why there is no trust in the institutions; because they have no humility and any dissenting voice is shut down.

New ruling class? When were the elites not the ruling class? It's always been that way.

Trump is a sociopath. It’s an illness. His father made him that way. It’s very sad.
Yes, proof is what I can see. I saw numbers accelerate for good in the country I love affecting people that I love. Talk is way too cheap. You can say he is anything you want, but analytical thinkers see the numbers and laugh at your words.

Thank you.

Economically left, socially conservative. Like me.

The current conservative parties are just as bad. All they conserve are leftist social policies. To resist becoming fodder to the future feudal overlords we need a complete return to traditionalism.
Don’t hold your breath. Constitutionally incapable of departing his liberal orthodoxy or its bible, the NY Times.
The fallacy of Australian land is that there is a huge proportion of it is barely habitable, desert, rocks, dust and no water.

Great conversation and while I agree with much of what is said in this interview, Trump was never called a racist until he became president and made enemies of both the legacy news media and many politicians. Abrasive? Yes. Racist? No.
This is a totally accurate observation!
No when he was donating to the Democratic Party he was a successful businessman and they all wanted to rub elbows with him
As a populist politician, Trump panders to racists, religious bigots and anyone who can vote, to gain supporters but is he racist or religious? Probably not. That sort of issue doesn't interest him, because he is totally obsessed with gaining personal power and wealth for himself, so he and Trump Inc. can be above the law and able to make as much money as they possibly can from any immoral, unethical, crooked/criminal activity he wants to pursue. His most defining characteristic is that he seems to place no limit on how far he is willing to go, legal or illegal, to get money for himself.
“Racist” is just a modern way of saying “heretic”
that is completely false, he was called racist a lot when he questioned obama's birth certificate, which was long before he became president
