Drayton Digistat SCR easy repair with a capacitor, also same for Iflo or British Gas marked units

  • The aim of this video is to show you how easy it is to repair a faulty Drayton Digistat SCR unit.
    The most common fault is: you call for heat, you get a green light on your SCR, your SCR DOES NOT 'click', and your boiler does not fire up. This is a 99.9999% fixable with a simple capacitor change, saving you anything between £60 to £100's.
    The capacitor can throw other strange faults too, but the above is the classic fault, Drayton will tell you to buy a new unit. I can supply the capacitor to you for just a few quid delivered to your door.
    Your board may not look exactly the same as shown on my video but the capacitor is the same, Drayton have a few different PCB designs, but the capacitor circuit is the same.
    Look me up on eBay,
    www.ebay.co.uk...
    my username is Bearsy72 or search eBay for "Drayton SCR Part", this will take you to my listing.
    Thanks for viewing and I hope I can help you.
    ******* Have just worked out what the fault is if you have a DEAD SCR, If it has no lights on at all, or if it is making a strange constant clicking noise then go to my eBay page and drop me a message *******

    Great, useful and easy to follow video. My drayton digistat scr went dead. (no lights) As recommended on his video - I went to David’s eBay page and asked. He was quick to diagnose my faulty scr. I choose to have the repair service as I thought some of the components were very tiny to soldier. (while my scr was away for repair, I still had hot water and central heating working manually as a friend told me how to turn off/bypass the timer temporarily) David also mentions - he can tell you how to have your central heating working as a temporary measure, which I think is great. I had my scr repaired, delivered, fitted by myself and working in less then seven days. I thought the service David offers is excellent, honest and reliable. And his video helped me save some money. Thank you.

    It's early days but this seems to have worked a treat. Drayton told me on no account should I change the capacitors (they didn't even say it would ok if an electrician did it), they said I'd have to replace both receivers at a cost of £250. £240 saved in half an hour and I have two working receivers. Genius. Thank you so much.

    Hi David, great video, I bought the capacitor and took the circuit board to a computer repair shop who removed the old one a soldered on the new one, he didn't even charge me but I gave him a tenner. Worked a treat, the heating is on, the wife is happy and I am having a peaceful life once again. Many thanks...

    David Williams has just repaired my SCR receiver. He's very quick (sent Tuesday, back on Friday!). In my opinion, he is not charging enough to repair the fault I had, where the lights go completely dead, which is harder to fix than the one in the video. I paid more than he asked because it requires some very fiddly soldering of extremely small components. I could have probably done it when my eyesight was better, but getting the right components economically would have been a pain. Brilliant job.

    Thank you, an excellent video. I wasn't as skilled as you at getting in but it's a very old unit. the vacuum unit I had seemed too inefficient compared to yours but managed to swap them out having ordered your product. the double-sided sticky foam and solder was a nice touch. Now I get a click every time so far. I wish I'd found you earlier. I suspect I've paid for a new boiler because the engineer was convinced it was the PCB in the boiler. It was due but was hoping for another couple of years.

    I had a struggle getting the old capacitor out, but the rest was straight forward and I was thrilled when the heating fired up again. All for only £4 plus the cost of a soldering iron! I'm really grateful to you for saving me £100 or more. Keep up with the good work!

    • @xxxxbigdavexxxx
      @xxxxbigdavexxxx  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      here is a tip for you guys. If you don't have a solder sucker, then do as I say at the 2mins marker, cut the legs as close to the old capacitor as you can. The only thing holding the capacitor to the board is a double sided pad, a small flat blade under the cap should ease it off. Then ADD a little more solder to the joint of the old legs, then when the solder is hot and flowing still with the iron on the leg use a pair of pliers to gently pull the legs out one at at time, if you feel friction stop and ensure you are hot enough. Any problems message me. Dave

  • @iand2143
    @iand2143 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thankyou worked exactly as described. Removing the SCR from the wall plate was easy, just undo the two screws on the bottom and it lifts off. There are no wires etc to disconnect. Just be mindful the wall plate is still 'live' so turn the switch or power off. I needed to heat the old solder up a fair bit more than in the video to remove enough of it to clear the two holes so the new wires could push through. Other than that it all went well. Never soldered before and even with limited skills the video made it easy.

    Thank you. Got a cap of your ebay store, fitted it and my heating is working perfectly again. I measured the value of the cap I removed and it was about half the rated value. So it is not unexpected that it failed to work as the capacitor dropper circuit output would have been much lower than the design limit.

    Hey Adam, if all u r doing is removing the SCR then just isolating the SCR should be fine, however if u are playing around with the wires on the back plate of the SCR then I would say go to ur fuse board. When the SCR is off please ensure the back box is left safe, people in the past have taped up the open box to avoid any type of personal contact.

    By an amazing coincidence, I have my dis-assembled Drayton SCR in front of me. Exactly as you describe, the green light comes on but the relay isn't driven. It's a 24V relay but only getting about 8.8V across the coil. What led you to the 0.68u EMC cap? When I probe mine, I just see the 1Meg resistor across it - no leakage (at low voltage, anyway). I see about 13V on the electrolytic cap, which looks too low. I admit to hating circuits with non-isolated 240V nearby!

The heating and hot water will be working fine and all of a sudden , the program seems to switch over and works in the opposite mode. ie the water will come on when it should be off and goes off when I override it to come on. I have to turn it off at the mains and leave it half hour to reset it . Would that have anything to do with the capacitor ?

  • @TariqKhwaja
    @TariqKhwaja 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    A note of warning that echoes Jim's below: despite being quite a handy DIYer usually, I had trouble getting the old capacitor out and, in trying to burn out the old solder, ended up burning part of the connection on the circuit board. I then had to get this repaired by a local computer repair shop.
    I say this to warn you to take care with the circuit board. But Dave's service and advice has been excellent and, despite my problems, I now have the heating working again for £12 instead of the £180 it cost me this time last year (why these things fail so often is another matter).

    • @xxxxbigdavexxxx
      @xxxxbigdavexxxx  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here are a few tips for you guys,
      1) It might be easier to cut the legs of the old faulty capacitor next to the body of the capacitor, this way the only thing holding that leg in will be the solder on that leg, the capacitor is stuck to the PCB so this gives it another point of contact, work on one leg at a time.
      2) This will sound silly but sometimes it is easier to ADD some solder to the joint, this way you can ensure the joint is hot enough and the soldering is flowing, it helps the existing solder melt thus helping you get the old leg(s) out.
      3) Don't force it, it should come out without too much force, it is not coming out make sure the solder is hot enough and is flowing.
      Good luck and enjoy your warm house once again

    I have intermittent issues. But now it fails more than it works. The usual fix was to remove the batteries from the stat for a few seconds and put them back in again. This usually worked but it doesn't anymore. How do I test the unit? The stat also does not seem to be reading the correct temperature. I'm sure that it is reading low.

    • @TheMutherfunkstar

      I wired a "hard wired" thermostat into position. Black & grey wires in my boiler COM - N/O terminals or wires 3&5 to the thermostat while I waited for the spare part. 240v are on these contacts so be careful. You could probably use a light switch using these contacts but it won't be controlled.

The same prob has popped up again, green light- no hot water. Tried re-syncing just in case and that seems OK. Anyway, have ordered another capacitor. My question is, if that doesn't work this time round, do you sell the complete unit? Because if I have to buy one, I'd rather buy from a person like you who is so helpful.

    Well I fitted the capacitor, fairly straightforward, I am now able to start the boiler with the override button but try as I might I cannot get the Digistat rfi to handshake with the scr, red light on, also with the boiler on, only the radiator next to the boiler gets warm and nor that warm either, all other rads stone cold, so it looks like more of a problem alas.

    My digitstat SCR doesn't seem to be receiving a signal- Red light continuously on. When I press the over-ride button nothing happens, no clicks or anything. Batteries ok in sender unit (only a few weeks old), tried moving it closer to SCR- nothing happened, tried resetting learn-mode- again nothing happened. Is this a faulty capacitor in the SCR, or a faulty sender unit?

    Hi David. I've looked for you on eBay but can't find you.
    I've got a problem with my Drayton digistat scr and I was looking at your repair video.
    My fault is that the heating has failed to come on so I've looked at the Drayton system. I've reset power to it as described in Drayton's instructions and when I return power no lights come on. If I press button 2 then no lights come on. If I press button 1 then the alarm light comes on. Nothing I do will make the boiler fire. But it will fire to heat the tap water in the tank.
    Does this fault sound like it would be cured by your repair kit? And if so, how long would it take to get to me?

    • @xxxxbigdavexxxx
      @xxxxbigdavexxxx  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kit Hi Kit, yes the capacitors can fail in one of 2 ways, either they will straight fail and the heating will not come on even though it is showing a green light, or they can become intermittent and will occasionally fail, if it were my receiver I would deffo change the capacitor, it's a known weak spot in the circuit design and a very good place to start. Hope this helps. Dave

      not had much to do with the sender units, they are normally bullet proof, think you can pick up cheap ones on ebay, any drayton digitstat should be okay, you will just need to pair it up with your receiver when you get it, your could have a dirty zebra strip on the back of the LCD or it could be a LCD on the way out, if it is a 2 drawer / 4 AA battery type unit, make sure the battery contacts are good and clean and tight, these older 2 drawer units can be a bit picking when it comes to the terminals, good luck, bell me if you need more help

      'Generally' if you hear the click then I would say the receiver is doing it's job, it sounds like it could be a boiler fault, you could bypass the receiver to confirm this but that would mean moving a wire on the back plate, before any wires are touched YOU MUST ENSURE THE POWER IS OFF TO BOTH the boiler and the receiver, I will say that again!!! Power OFF to BOTH devices before touching the wiring!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Dave, thank you for the great video. I have permanent red light on my scr. Is it still to do with faulty capacitor ?

    • @xxxxbigdavexxxx
      @xxxxbigdavexxxx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, So a solid constant red light means loss of sync between the room stat and SRC receiver, the room stats are pretty bullet proof and very very rarely fail in this way.Things to check, are the batteries ok in the room stat, also have you tried the re-syncing process, this process should be on the Drayton website, its all about holding down buttons and closing draws on room statsIf you have tried / checked the above then it's time to look at the SCR receiver, the capacitor can cause sync issues, it is definitely a good place to start, I am not saying it will fix all units with this type of fault but have seen it cause this fault.You could photo graph the PCB and send it to me, only need to see the rubber button side of the board, look me up on eBay and send me the photo I might be able to pick something upDave
