This movie has been slept on for decades. Definitely deserves wider recognition outside of being a cult classic. The dark humour, the infinitely quotable dialogue, the performances from the leading ladies, hell even Bruce Willis is actually "acting" here and isn't playing Bruce Willis or a McClane knockoff. An absolute gem!
I’d even argue that it’s significant for commenting on what society does to women. They might’ve actually been genuine friends in another context but because of pressure of society and specifically the pressure of conforming to traditional standards of what is considered beautiful they’ve both been driven to do incredibly unhealthy things, both physically and mentally. They’ve been driven to hate each other out of competition for mens and society at large’s attention. They’ve literally been driven to kill. I’d say the “potion” is a metaphor for plastic surgery and at the end of the movie when their bodies have decayed and they’ve spent decades painting each other they no longer look human and represents that point where women have so much plastic surgery that they do not look like themselves anymore. I look at someone like Madonna and I feel sad. She claims she doesn’t care about what people think and will do what she wants, but I see someone who cares immensely what other people think. She desires so much to remain relevant and remain young and remain todays standard for ideal feminine beauty that she’s drastically altered her appearance to the point that she no longer resembles who she used to be. If she truly didn’t care about others opinions and was truly not affected by society’s demands for beauty she wouldn’t have had any work done. This movie is an important cautionary tale, that shows what happens when society and men specifically destroy women, their self esteem, and pit them against each other.

My favorite movie ever! Know word for word. I remember being 7 years old, going to the store and seeing this on a shelf on VHS. I had no clue what the movie was, but the cover made my 7 year old weird brain go, “omg, she has a hole in her stomach and she’s still alive! sooo cool.” Little did I know it would become my favorite movie and I watched it hundreds of times. Nothing compares. It brings me comfort lol
This movie reminds me of my grandfather. Back when I was a kid in elementary school, I saw this movie on TV. Not full but just some scenes including this scene. Because it was late night and I had to sleep. Since English isn't our primary language, I asked him what the meaning of the title is. I also ask any words in English I saw on TV. Then he explained it all to me. Among other grandchildren, I was the curious one. Thankfully he was a teacher so it wasn't a big problem. And then he passed away when I was in 4th grade. Sometimes I missed him. I want to meet him in my dream. I had so much stories to tell about. Sorry for long comment.
Even though, Ernest and Madeline aren't a happily married couple anymore. After they saw Helen come out of the fountain and darted away. He still had his arm around her in a protective way. That's just Bruce's instincts!
I can honestly see Shout Factory! releasing it later this year for the 30th anniversary since they're already doing strong 4K releases for the first couple of "Child's Play" sequels and "Cat People", plus they already did a solid release of this six years ago.
