    "Philip was vice president of Citibank, specialising in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions.
    At age 34, he was rated by Australian Business Magazine in their Top 40 Australian head-hunted executives. At age 40, he witnessed cruelty on such a colossal scale that it affected him profoundly. He decided to give away everything he owned with warm hands, and die broke. 'And so far, we are right on budget,' he jokes.
    Today he devotes his life to children, animals, the environment, the terminally ill, the homeless and the arts. He supports over 500 humanitarian projects in over 40 countries with schools, orphanages, shelters, sanctuaries, clinics, and scholarships.
    In 2005 he received the Order of Australia. In 2007 he was Australian of the Year, Victoria. The Australia Day Council said of him, 'Essentially a private man, Philip Wollen seeks no personal publicity but is not afraid to step into the limelight for a just cause.' "

    After watching this speech two years ago when I was 17 I decided to go vegan. I sent Philip Wolen a letter and he so graciously replied to me. He was a former CEO of City Bank credit card company then he retired and donated his entire fortune towards saving animals. Truly my hero.

      1. Caution and careful measures, will bring great treasures.
      2. Caution and careful measures, will bring great riches.
      Not surprisingly, many more people agreed with the first statement :)

      Amazing speech. Almost brought tears to my eyes too.
      I'm 34, I'm a meat-eater and I'd like to become a vegetarian, mostly for ethical reason, but... I'm afraid of my body weight loss.
      I'm very slim and I don't want to lose any weight. Gaining each 1 kilogram of weight is really tough task for me. It takes me about one year :-)
      I eat bacon, steaks, cakes, lot of sweets, bananas, milk, eggs, and I am still very slim. I don't smoke and don't drink alcohol. However, I eat relatively small amounts of food every time. If I switch to vegetarian (or even vegan) diet, I would have to eat much bigger servings, which may be a problem for me. Moreover, I work physically (in warehouse) and I need a food with high concentration of energy (nothing beats meat here) and also a food that keeps my stomach filled for at least 3 hours as I can't go for break every 1-2 hours. I'm going to buy a new blender this week and start to make fruit and vegetable smoothies. Any advices how to become a vegetarian and not lose weight? Or even better, how to gain weight on vege diet. Thanks!

      I get plenty of calories on a vegan diet because I eat lots of beans and rice and potatoes and pasta...I add vegan butter, olive oil..I make garlic toast every day to go with my meals..I could go on but I am not the one to listen to..search online..there are tons of ideas and ways to keep weight..lose weight..gain weight on a vegan diet..and ethics is my first reason always for being vegan.I am no raw vegan, but I do eat a lot of fruit...an avocado can really make you feel full..and some hommus..ect,ect,ect

      Our bodies are dependent upon glucose for energy, the preferred source of fuel, which is from carbohydrates. Our brains can ONLY be fueled by glucose. Make sure you have enough healthy fats and you'll be fine. Since you've been used to eating animal products every day, it's best to transition and give your body time to adapt, to be healthy. Healthy fats are in nuts, seeds, and avocados. For the most recent and comprehensive information about nutrition, visit www.NutritionFacts.org

      Caroline ASMR Actually not "name one desease that is caused by a vegan diet". That one made me laugh the hardest. Sugar is a 100% vegan product, wich causes diabetes. And also, pointing a finger at all people who eat grassfedbeef for slapping the tear-stained face off a hungry child just doesn't make sense at all. This clip is probably effective propaganda and a nice tearjerker for vegans, but needless to say factually incorrect. And that's a shame, because you can never trust a guy like this to try to tell the truth objectively, wich can be pointed out by listening to him for only ten minutes.

      The term "VEGAN" refers to the philosophy of avoiding undue harm to any animal life, as far as practical, whilst "vegetarian" is merely someone who consumes a plant-based diet.
      Therefore, veganism is NOT a diet but a moral or ethical position against animal exploitation of any kind. 🌱

      They need to wake up from greed, from mass meat production that comes from factory farms! Not free from meat unless you make the animals go extinct. Ok don't eat meat. But people have for centuries. What started to make it all wrong was higher demand and greed. Then entered sadistic behavior along with brutality. Think about it. Kosher type farming, good farming was never about animal abuse. Ban factory farming and quit bashing people for eating good ethically produced, in other words, kosher meat. They're gonna start growing meat in labs by the way lol. Without even having the full animal. If that isn't freaky, I dunno what is. But that one isn't kosher and I'll never eat it unless I was starving...maybe we should start eating crickets instead? 🤢

      Mark Walton, actually most of what this man says is factually incorrect. "name one desease that is caused by a vegan diet".

    • @ninjahale_14
      @ninjahale_14 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Richard Touw sugar isn’t the cause of diabetes. Fat builds up in arteries e.g. cholesterol from animal products. Sugar isn’t great don’t get me wrong, it has excess calories that we don’t need but fat in our bodies is what causes heart disease. My dad reversed his type 2 diabetes by following a plant based diet. Our doctor said that his diet worked too well and now he’s off of all of his medicine!

    This talk was the turning point for me. My son is already vegan, and my father became a vegetarian later in life. As a retired man I have been thinking a lot more about my spiritual place in the world, and I can't see how animal terror and gratuitous ecological destruction can continue to have a place in it. From now on I will no longer buy industrially-produced meat, and when our freezer is empty I will no longer cook it, and as far as possible I will no longer eat it. This will not be a burden for me, it will be a liberation. We should tread as lightly as possible on the Earth, and learn that loving kindness to all living beings is the true panacea to our general malaise of fear and anxiety, and our consequent compulsive compensatory addictive behaviours of grasping at the material world and of seeking solace in distorted personal relationships. Thank you.

      Kae, you should be careful of treating mere words as "powerful", because power exists only in the form of internalized transcendent experience. It is a very long way indeed to go from the words to the experience. Realising a unity of consciousness between ourselves and our fellow creatures of other orders simply does not require one to be ideologically vegetarian, let alone vegan. The unification of consciousness, even between ourselves and plants, operates at a level far deeper than ideology, far deeper than rationally mediated intention, very much deeper than words.

    In this incredibly powerful speech I am bewildered as to why Philip Wollen who is a vegan promotes vegetarianism when there is as much suffering in glass of milk as there is in a steak? To promote anything less than veganism is promoting animal exploitation. We must all of us be vegan and the message must always be crystal clear: veganism is the moral baseline.

    • @kindnessproduction3362
      @kindnessproduction3362 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kate - Philip Wollen was only given 10 minutes to speak. He did not have time to talk about milk, hunting, leather, circuses, vivisection etc . . . although he could have discussed these issues in great depth. For your information, in respect of your question on milk, this is what he was frequently asked on his lecture series around Australia:
      "What made you decide to do what you do?"
      This was his response:
      “There was no single seminal event, just a gradual realization that I had experienced a paradigm shift in my thinking.
      There was a time when I used to joke that the only thing that will change a man is if he:
      a) finds religion or
      b) Has a full frontal lobotomy.
      Nowadays I say it is when he discovers his character.
      If there ever was a Damascene event in my case, then it would be the time I visited a large industrial conglomerate in the course of my professional work as a merchant banker. I inspected one of their subsidiaries - which turned out to be a slaughterhouse.
      It was the most terrifying experience of my life and it affected me profoundly. I made the most important decision of my life that morning.
      To become a vegetarian; to leave my career; and become an advocate for social justice.
      But I was not yet a vegan. I simply didn’t know enough to know better.
      I thought that dairy was the bucolic, peaceful image of green pastures and crystal streams, rolling hills and the poetry of Wordsworth and Shelley. Little did I know that behind the dairy walls was a cruel industrial juggernaut, a vile gulag of despair?
      I discovered that milk was meat in liquid form.
      During a business trip to India I saw a milkman dragging and whipping a cow. She had been badly injured in an accident with a lorry. To get her to move, he was threw chili powder in her eyes, and shoved sharp objects into her anus. He had a chain around her neck and forced her to walk with a broken leg and severe injuries to her spine. Beside her walked her scrawny, starving and terrified calf, ribs protruding and her skinny legs trembling.
      At the slaughterhouse gate, he unchained her.
      But before he did so, the bastard milked her.
      If that sight does not change the heart of a man, nothing will.”

      @GrowlyCubNZ 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kate FitzGibbon It's not the baseline. Plants are living creatures too and you farm them and hybridise them into unnatural forms to suit your purposes. On a spiritual level, eating a plant is still a form of murder. You just decided to be God and judge that one form of life is of greater value than another because you are more closely related to animals and can relate to their forms of distress. I bet you don't bat a blinkered eye when you tear a carrot out of the ground and chomp on it alive.... despite the fact that if left alone the carrot would continue to live and sprout.. potatoes and other vegetables too... I bet you likewise don't offer much sympathy to insects who don't show signs of distress that you can relate to. You Vegans are all bloody self-righteous fucking hypocrites, the lot of you. Get down off your high horse.

    • @katefitzgibbon3711
      @katefitzgibbon3711 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      GrowlyCubNZ Plants do not have a nervous system so they do not feel pain as do sentient beings. Also if you really believe that eating plants is a form of murder then this is yet another reason to be vegan as animals eat loads of plants before you eat them so the amount of plant killing is way higher. I do care about insects and avoid killing as far as is possible. Are you really telling me that you are as distressed about a carrot death as a person death because if so I don't believe you and if this is true why are you advocating all these extra plant deaths by eating the animal which has to eat the plants first? I think you are the self righteous one: your self thinks it is right to cause unnecessary pain to other sentient beings. Vegans don't.

    • @GrowlyCubNZ
      @GrowlyCubNZ 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kate FitzGibbon No one will convince a psycho vegan like you. You are religious extremists plain and simple. You cannot be reasoned with, you are dogmatic and irrational and self righteous. Moral crusaders, hell bent on making the planet a better place in your vision.. except cropping which you rely on heavily for your food is neither natural nor good for the planet, and if everyone becomes totally reliant on plant foods for nutrition as you would like, then we become easily controlled, as companies like Monsanto move more and more towards copyrighting and patenting their seeds and forcing consumers to eat them without their knowing. Diversity is what keeps all species going.. not inbreeding. You would have us turn from omnivores into herbivores which is not a clever survival strategy, and that is before we even get into the whole debate about what humans are really designed to eat. If you want to 'save the planet' and drive us to extinction, go for it, but do it on your own or in a little village somewhere. The majority of the humans on this planet are happy eating meat and that's the way it's going to stay I'm afraid Kate.

    • @GrowlyCubNZ
      @GrowlyCubNZ 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kate FitzGibbon The animals will still eat the plants regardless of whether we go on to eat the animals or not. So eating the plants would see us competing for food with some animals... if we all suddenly stopped eating meat and drinking milk cows would likely be reduced to a handful of curiosities trapped in zoo's because farmers would have zero incentive anymore to breed them. Have you actually thought any of the consequences of your fantasy ideology through?
      No chicken or eggs on the menu? Ok, so we'll not farm any chickens and instead I'll grow vegetables where the hen houses used to be. The world populations of these animals would dwindle rapidly. Without serving a use for us, they would become a nuisance. And farm land which cows use is still home to grass, earthworms, a whole bunch of other insect and plant life.. without cows to add to their lifecycles some would perish.. and with machines and harvesters churning up the earth and croppers loading the soil with fertilisers and pesticides, the land is actually worse off than if cattle were upon it. And what about irrigation? Where will the extra water come from? We need a greater length of piping to irrigate crops than to get water to animals... so more plastic tubes filling the earth... and so on....
      There are consequences for every action. And in your idealism you just haven't really thought any of them through. You listened to other idealists who have told you it would make the world better to stop eating meat.. you believed it.. and never stopped to think about the boring nuts and bolts questions of changing from animal farms to cropping. That makes you self-righteous... having blind faith in what you've been told and never questioning or challenging it or thinking for yourself.
      And on a spiritual level yes, all creatures have a life force and sentience and if you cause stress to animals, plants feel it. It's scientifically proven. The reverse is also likely true. When a plant is suffering I do notice it myself, though you likely don't because you kill so many of them to feed yourself, your flora lust takes over and blinds you to a plants suffering. It doesn't need a central nervous system to feel pain and respond to that. But aside from that.. you need to think more about the effect increasing cropping would do to our ecosystems and the Earth cos what they are already doing is rather devastating and unsustainable.

      alex burnside "name one desease that is caused by a vegan diet".

      Richard Touw your comment is pretty hilarious aswell actually sugar does not cause diabetes. The cause of diabetes is cells being blocked up by saturated fat so the insulin can’t get in to the cell to do its job when you eat sugar your blood sugar levels rise and body produces more insulin because it can’t get in to cell so try’s to force its way in but the cell is clogged by the fat so you are wrong so much so that a plant based diet can actually REVERSE diabetes. Iv attached a video that shows a few different doctors explaining this. there is plenty of information out there about how this has been scientifically proven so your comment is pretty stupid. Do some research before commenting on things like this consuming animal products is linked to 14 of 15 of our top killers the only one it’s not linked to is accidents. And as for the world hunger grains fed to animals in the west 80% of those grains come from third world country’s so like I said do some research your obviously not educated on the subject that’s why it makes no sense to you. th-cam.com/video/uSc7OfJUHr0/w-d-xo.html

      alex burnside Haha, vegans also get diabetes, sorry. This video is a joke. Like I said. Effective propaganda. Take the having to shoot someone to start a cemmetery comment for example, what a joke. If you listen closely, the whole talk is filled with examples like that. And yes I am actually wel educated on this topic. Please be aware that the video is an emotional talk, because people respond better to emotion than to facts. Like I said, it is factualy incorrect.

      Adam Quirke Only 3% of the earths water is drinkable, do you know what percentage goes to animal livestock? We will go extinct if people do not wake up to this madness.
      Do you know what percent of people die every year from avoidable diseases caused by eating animal protein?
      Time to do some research.

    • @globetrix
      @globetrix 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Adam Quirke OMG Adam, do you think that if people would stop eating meat (which wouldn't happen overnight, surprise, surprise), they would still keep breeding 90 million chicken? Did you have economics at school?
      And has water got to do with it? Countries are on the verge of going to war over drinking water with each other. We are running out of drinking water, and fast. And we keep giving it to the animals, just because the majority of people are too weak and selfish to give up meat. Still don't see the connection?

    • @amanda-vn1sd
      @amanda-vn1sd 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      both adam and why don't you look it up yourself. i think you may learn some things of interest.
      livestock are destroying our earth and peoples health that eat them.
      It is time to stop closing your eyes and making excuses... wake up and learn the truth.

    • @amanda-vn1sd
      @amanda-vn1sd 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the meat and dairy industry is based on supply and demand like all corporations, if people were no longer buying they would stop over breeding.
      Rats? Please at least look up the number one cause of death in western world, heart disease. look it up and also how many die. It now has become an epidemic in Asian countries where it was once unheard of before they started eating meat, look at Japan and China ( before meat and dairy then after). this illogical madness is spreading and ruining everything for the sake of a few peoples greed and an ignorant population. In this day and age with access to so much information ignorance is a choice. Ignorance is not bliss, it is causing people and this earth (which we rely on for survival) much unnecessary suffering, damage and death.
