      “Only 100 billion people have ever lived. 7 billion people live today and yet we torture and kill 2 billion of sentient living beings every week. 10 thousand entire species are wiped out every year because of the actions of one and we are now facing the 6th mass extinction in cosmological history. If any other organism did this a biologist would call him a virus. It is a crime against humanity of unimaginable proportions.” Phillip Wollen

    I have been a vegan for 22 years and was a vegetarian since birth. My father became a vegetarian in 1937. My health improved a lot when I went vegan. I am nearly 60 now and feel great. I am very active and can out run, bike, and hike all my meat eating relatives. At this point high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis have riddled all of these meat eating relatives. A lot of them are 20 to 30 years younger than my self. The biggest evidence is my wife who is a mirror image twin. She is thin active and still full of life and healthy. Her twin looks 20 years older than her and is suffering terrible from most of the malady’s listed above. They are genetically identical. The only real difference in their lives is their diets. And the difference is very dramatic.

      2. It is about the mass consumption that is totally off nowadays. If you only eat animals when you really need to, because of health or because you live somewhere you can only get animals, that is perfectly fine. Most of the people dont follow that. In fact they eat so much animals, it affects their health negativley on the back of other living creatures suffering. Plus it damages our Planet. The Balance is totally off, That is the issue!

      the problem is that these animals are not natural. Mankind has genetically modified the domesticated animals to suit their needs. I read that they are experimenting on pigs not to modify them to be born blind and deaf. It all needs to stop. Let's keep spreading the word and make everyone aware of these atrocities. Of course, there are going to be some good ole boys and girls who will never be compassionate or have empathy, but most people are not aware that pigs are killed in gas chambers, or the baby male chicks killed on their first and only day of life, and dairy cows who suffer being forcibly impregnated and having their babies taken away over and over again.

I feel like these arguments belong in a primary school playground. I'm pretty sure it was around that time I learned that microbes do not not possess central nervous systems and lack the ability to experience pain and suffering. How unfortunate that they brought so many weak arguments to an intellectual debate.

      @WaynoTV 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree it is a specious argument. But, that is all they have - other than the fact they just like to do something, in this case eat meat. So damn the other arguments. Other than the enjoying the taste of the food there really are no other compelling arguments and I am leery of Fiona Chambers' arguments about "saving the species" by eating them, particularly since the pro side largely rejected those claims.

    • @annettesicari
      @annettesicari 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Wayne Fitzpatrick It's as if Fiona doesn't realise that we have always shared the planet with other species before we started breeding them for mass human consumption. They're called 'wild animals' or 'native animals'. Someone needs to tell her about them. And if we weren't making space for animal farming and to plant crops to feed them, we would have MORE of them. It's hard not to be a bit condescending towards the opposition team when they insist on not seeing what's right under their nose. It's like Philip Wollen said: It's hard to make someone see the truth when their paycheck relies on them NOT seeing it.

    Dear vegetarians, The more you learn about animal agriculture (not to mention all the other issues where animals are exploited eg entertainment), you will find that a vegetarian lifestyle actually does not agree with your ethics. This was my case, as I understood that the slaughter of beef cow/bull, was no different to the slaughter of a bobby calf, or to the slaughter of day old male chicks in the eggs industry. Hopefully you are on your way to seeing the full picture (trust me you will always be learning) and go vegan. Its easy once you train your mind to always ALWAYS remember the lives that WILL be lost (as you eating an animal product is you saying to the industry "I will pay you to kill for me!". Now, (after less than year of veganism) I will never go back; because eating or contributing to cruelty is completely unacceptable or excusable. Vegan is the most peaceful lifestyle in existence, give it go.

      Layla Flame Layla, I'm so happy to say that I'm finally, after 8 years of vegetarianism, making the lifestyle switch to veganism. While I will never disagree with the fact that the world's vegetarian population isn't making a huge difference by saving millions of lives each year, it's true in saying that many many dairy farms are factory farms themselves (as just one example). I may wish that I had made this choice sooner, but I will never regret my 8 years spent not supporting the meat industry! Bravo to all who are making any kind of a difference! I believe that those who make ethical and compassionate changes in their lives will only continue to grow and spread their ethics and compassion. They're insecure and desperately want to be liked and to fit in with their moronic colleagues or friends or family or all three. They are so afraid to be shunned or.be called a vegan and made fun of and pressured to be meat eaters to the point of suicide. These are weak pathetic insecure peolle who care so much what others think of them that they can never Be vegan because otherwise they would not be "normal". They would even get suicidal and kill themselves if they were made fun of for being vegan that's how sad and pathetic and insecure they are. Their "confident" excuses for eating meat is compete bs and nothing but a facade covering the truth. If you think I'm wrong tell me I'm wrong. But deep down you know I completely nailed it. The whole "I like the meat taste" is really a very weak argument and not the main reason..they eat meat covered with so much marinade or sauce or other plant based flavors or spices that the meat taste is basically not even there. Plus you could replace the meat with something else that absorbs the same flavors and spices and it would taste and feel the same. So it all boils down to their pathetic insecurity. It is healthier and better for humans to eat vegan...our digestive system and bodies thrive better off it. And it is NOT just about choice because it involves the lives of living sentient beings, it is no longer a personal choice at that point. There are zero diseases caused by a vegan diet, but multitudes caused by meat and dairy consumption. And there are no happy animals killed for meat.. they all go to the same slaughterhouses and "free range" simply means not packed together in crates, to be labeled "free range" animals only have to be allowed to be outside for less than one hour. And if you wouldn't send your cat or dog to a slaughterhouse then ask yourself why you think it is ok to send pigs and cows.

      You obviously don’t know what humane means

    • @fromeveryting29
      @fromeveryting29 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Humane refers to "taking the interest of the other into account", essentially. That means, if someone is in a lot of pain, you might kill them as painlessly as you can. That even goes for humans, in some countries. There is not a single animal ever in a slaughterhouse whose interest is taken into account. Those animals want out, want to live, want companionship and safety.
      If we were to slaughter them as "humanely" as possible, in effect disregarding their interest to live, it would mean carefully administering a drug until death, petting them and calming them in the process. We know that is about exactly the opposite of what happens.
      They are pushed and stung forward in blood-smelling and loud rooms. Screams are heard, and finally, some person comes along and either cuts their throat as they twist and scream in panic, or they are shot in the head, gassed, hung upside down and beheaded, ground or suffocated.
      NO, ZERO, consideration is taken to the interest of these animals. They are mere products that happen to move and make sounds. They "produce" for us. They are "harvested".
      Humanity (at least the west) is at the doorstep of the next step in moral progress. During all of history, the project of "civilization" has moved away from "nature". That is what civilization is. As we all know, nature is brutal. In nature, it's all about self-preservation, also at the expense of others. Animals who live in nature have terrible deaths and sometimes lives. Our own lives looked like that, in the past.
      But given our intellectual development and ingenuity, we have gradually created systems that remove more and more individuals from the brutal fates of nature. Instead of letting children die of natural diseases, we develop medicine to treat them. Instead of freezing to death during winters, we build houses and electrical systems to shelter ourselves. We develop vets to treat the animals we identify the most with, and have laws to stop at least some of the worst abuse to animals we could conceive of.
      We develop more and more sophisticated systems of care to help the most un-productive and vulnerable humans in society, all because we care for their suffering.
      The next step for humanity is to realize that human>animal is a faulty and detrimental dichotomy. Everyone with the capacity to suffer should be granted moral consideration. Humans ARE animals. Everyone who have interests, and a capacity to have those interest unjustifiably discarded in pursuit of some superficial pursuit, have as much moral worth as any other.
      On top of these facts, there are the environmental and global health arguments, and veganism is pretty much undeniably the only, and most important, moral cause one can ever support.

I don't claim we should eat meat but to be fair looking at other apes is not an example of where we came from, you have to look at our common ancestors, I think it is more likely humans diets are largely based on geography. If you were in the fertile crescent your diet would be drastically different than those in the arctic circle. What is most fortunate is that we are omnivorous so even if we ate meat in our past there are no complications in not eating it in the future.

    This is a wonderful video. I became a vegetarian 46 years ago, when I was 16, though I made the decision to do it when I was 4, the day I realised that cows became meat. I'm now 62. I've had a few vegan and vegetarian friends who are totally committed, and far more who will break the rules from time to time. To begin with, I saw the numbers going up, but it's become a way of life, and I just 'got on with it'. I didn't like the idea of facebook, so delayed joining up, but eventually did so last year. It was a sort of revelation, - I discovered how many of us are out there in the world. I am English, but live in Australia, I had come to the conclusion that most Australians are a bit too tough, insensitive about animals, a bit unthoughtful, (also somewhat uninformed) for very many to give up meat. Though I of course knew about Peter Singer, my feelings were that being such a new country, with difficult, tough, beginnings, & a long way from Europe, Australians were still, largely,stuck in survival mode. (At primary school, my son went to camp, and when he came home told me they'd watched cattle being debollocked, when I questioned the teachers about this, they didn't really understand what I was on about. So this video was somewhat of a revelation! I think the anti-meat speakers are all quite brilliant. I believe the reason for this is that they are all committed and very serious about it, - they are passionate, and have spent a lot of time thinking it through. The carnivores on the other hand, clearly haven't given serious thought to what they consume, - they are still in that mode of seeing other animals as commodities. My feelings are that to live with true integrity, you must consider life seriously, and act accordingly. I can't really laugh with these people who make a bit of a joke out of animals lives, & then use that as justification to keep killing. - Sort of 'look at me, I'm a joker, life's a joke so I can do what I want.' I don't take life seriously either, but I think you have an obligation to take OTHERS' lives seriously. It is NOT up to you to take other lives as a laugh.
    I hadn't heard of Phillip Wollen before, - what a wonderful human - (I've never come across men of the ilk of either he or Peter Singer in Australia, tell me, where do these types hide here? These three people are all magnificent speakers, but Phillip some how manages to get his feelings of heart-wrench at this barbarity across, in a way that I have never seen before, it's the way that I feel, our treatment of animals and sometimes other humans is soul-destroying. It makes a pointless travesty out of being alive.
    I'm sorry to keep going but this film is so exciting. If you contrast the anti carnivores with the meat eaters, the difference in character is, to my mind, astounding! The meat eaters seem a very wishy-washy uncertain lot, perhaps because they take their stance for granted, they see eating meat as something you just do, not something to bother questioning. Just another awful God-given-right to live at the expense of the misery of others.
    Anyway, after my nearly half century, of living unreliant upon death and cruelty, in the last year, I have seen a break-through. ALL people are questioning the origins of their diet. I've also noticed the resistors, who seem to be getting a little desperate, for the lack of any authentic argument. They cling desperately and stubbornly, to their hypocritical religions in some pathetic attempt to not have to change their ways. It is really easy now to have no part of cruelty. I spent many a long winter, trudging around in leaky boots, now there are heaps of alternatives, - leaky boots are a thing of the past. I am thrilled, to see so many people acting on their conscience, I used to hope it would happen in my lifetime, but until now, I was never really confident that it would. The world is at last proving that the greater majority do have empathy.

    It genuinely warms my heart to hear how much louder the audience cheered for the pro-health and compassion speakers than for the pro-meat speakers 🥰🌱 Go vegan 🥑 ❤️🐷

    The guy who yelled out at 1:38:04 while the point was being made that the destruction of the amazon is caused by soy farmers is right; it's almost all to feed cattle. It takes many thousands of pounds of food and water over a cow's lifetime before we can eat them. Wildlife is destroyed by farming. Farming crops can pollute heavily and use a lot of water. If you think that is an issue, then you should be all for reducing the billions of animals we feed billions, possibly trillions of pounds of grain and water each year. The vast majority of it all ends up excreeted, urinated, or exhaled out anyways. Great job to the "pro" team for their well-prepared arguments grounded in logic and compassion. It's sad that being vegan is seen by some as an extreme form of compassion. To me, not killing someone who doesn't want or need to die should be the bare minimum ethical value for all humans.

      Andrea Gonzalez. Delighted to meet another vegan. You are right. The opposition team was so deceitful and mean-spirited. They were soundly thrashed.

    In Jainism the underlying principle is to minimize violence. There are life forms from single sense to five senses. Animals and humans both have five senses and so are equal in the intensity of violence. Keep your own book of accounts. One is only responsible for the level of violence one commits. Be well what ever you do

    They still need to grow spiritually and intellectually, i feel sad for them...

    "I love eating meat">> "I love unnecessarily eating the sentient beings who trembled fearfully, was scared for their life, didn't want to die, but had to prepare for their throat to be slitted by us, insentient beings, who didn't give a single thought about what we're doing will cause excruxiating pain and suffering.
