      True. My PC is a decent spec, i7 5930k, gtx 980ti, 16gb 2400, etc. It copes fine with the huge 4K files my drones create... until I add transitions or fx; then things slow down considerably until shadow files are ready.

      G'day Maliek. Cheers for your reply. Thought you might be interested in some info on this tutorial.....My PC was custom built about 5 months ago to the highest standard I could afford for Video Editing/Gaming, with an Intel Quad Core i7 - 7700K Processor, high end NVIDIA graphics & sound cards, and beefy PSU. I use it for Motor Racing/Flight Simulators and HD video editing, and it's always been fantastic at handling these resource intensive tasks. I use PowerDirector 16 and there was never any issue editing & rendering HD video from Motorcycling video footage recorded on my previous budget priced HD Action Cam. Was recently able to upgrade to a previously unaffordable GoPro, when I found a family who bought a Hero 5 Black a year ago, never used it, and sold it to me for less than half price....Score! So I was somewhat shocked the 1st time I tried to edit footage from my GoPro, particularly when I used default cam settings 1st time out, recording at 1080p/30fps. I hadn't even tried recording in 2.7K or 4K yet, and the preview was SO slow, jerky, and out of sync with the audio that editing was virtually impossible, despite easily editing HD video recorded at 1080p on my previous cam. The weirdest part is that the videos preview perfectly when added to the timeline on their own?! As soon as you add anything to the project like another audio track, or even just a Title Effect, the preview stops working. Still not sure exactly why this occurs. My hardware should be up to it, and always was before. Same goes for PowerDirector. Went for a short ride a few days ago recording in 2.7K/60fps this time. Editing resulted in the same issues, with everything working fine as long as the GoPro clips were the only thing in the timeline. Technically I could produce a basic video, but any attempt at adding anything to the timeline like titles, secondary audio, or anything else, would make editing impossible in the usual sense. I was able to add titles and an audio track by estimation without being able to preview. PowerDirector would then function perfectly normally in "produce" mode, rendering the final product in whatever format/codec/resolution I chose, being MP4, H.264, 1080p/30fps on the first GoPro video, and subsequently 2.7K/60fps. Following your instructions in this tutorial, last night I tried your method to solve the preview issues. My only divergence was using AVC (Any Video Converter) rather than Handbrake, as it's an excellent virtually identical software already installed on my PC I've used for ages, and I can replicate your results exactly. Having created cloned files of my 2.7K clips in 720p/24fps, and proceeding as per the tutorial including changing PowerDirector settings to suit, adding the lower res files to the timeline made no difference whatsoever!? I tried closing PowerDirector and re-producing numerous 720p x264 clones of one of the 2.7K clips in 30 and various other frame rates, and lowered Bitrates, then trying it in PowerDirector after each attempt, with no change. Even playing about with the PwrDir settings, changing the preview quality & hardware acceleration in an attempt to use less resources made no difference. Having inexplicably had no luck with the method in this tutorial, as everything I know suggests it HAS to work, or at least show SOME improvement, I capitulated in confused exhaustion at around 2am and halfheartedly, with most of my attention directed at the TV behind me, reopened PwrDir, imported one of the 2.7K GoPro clips, changed the settings, placing the timeline frame rate at 60fps, disabling shadow files, setting preview quality to "High Preview Resolution", and under Hardware Acceleration, disabling the "Enable OpenCL technology to speed up video effect preview/render" function, and engaging the "Enable hardware decoding" function. The final act was to manually delete temporary files to free up a little memory. I then added a 2.7K file to the timeline, added a title, and hit play expecting the preview to malfunction as usual, when.......the bastard started working exactly as it should!?!!? As my mind imploded, to verify whether it was really working, I added 2 more 2.7K clips to the timeline, and even imported a music video, added it to track 2 with only audio enabled for a soundtrack and mixed it into this short little 5 minute test project.....and the maggot kept working perfectly. Apparently solving these issues on my PC is less about technical knowledge & logical process in pursuit of predictable outcomes, than it is about succeeding with counter intuitive sorcery where logic & reason could not to achieve the desired result! 🤣
      Looking forward to watching more of your tutorials on aspects of PwrDir 16 I haven't learnt yet.
      Sorry for the long message. 🤬 Regards from Down Under!😎 👍

      Tom FlaTTop interesting. Glad you figured it out. Sometimes trial and error works better than our tried and true solutions. Thanks for sharing the outcome.

    • @TomFlaTTop_BMW
      @TomFlaTTop_BMW 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, stumbled on it rather than figured it out. And that's my point....your tried and true solutions are based on sound reasoning & logical process that MUST work from a technical perspective that makes sense, rather than the unfathomable voodoo my PC prefers. How the hell does a LOWER resolution 720p shadow file/cloned copy give my PC an unsolvable total meltdown editing in PwrDir, when a 2.7K file works/previews perfectly with a few settings tweaks? If I suggested that 720p files were more resource intensive than files in 2.7K or 4K, you'd think I was smoking crack again! And how the hell do you seek solutions or improvements to processes that function so counter intuitively that any success you have can only be accidental? Just doesn't make sense. As an ex-Motor Mechanic/Mechanical Engineer, I'm used to diagnosing issues and applying correct theory & practice to implement logical solutions. Problems that require solutions from the school of Harry bloody Potter shouldn't apply to reality. 🤡🤮😂 Anyhow, cheers Maliek. Love your work. Thanks for your patience.

    • @PDU_Tutorials
      @PDU_Tutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom FlaTTop Yeah, I hear you. I was wondering how the heck what you did even worked. 😂🤣😂 I thought clearing out the cache/temporary files would help but that didn’t really make sense since you used so many different resolutions of the files (unless they all had the same file name). Well, as a current Process Engineer I definitely understand how relying on data and logical reasoning works but I’m also aware that on rare occasion there are outliers that lead to the solution as well. Whether you figured it out or stumbled upon the solution at least it’s working. 😀 Good convo.

    Hi - love your vids thanks. 4K is a challenge for all edit software. I'm not sure if there is any time or performance advantage of the lower res proxy files from PDR shadow files or going via more complicated handbrake file swap workflow in your vid. Also your Handbrake proxies were 720p (easier to edit) vs 1080p shadow files from PDR. If you had used 720p shadow files in PDR I assume the timeline edit/playback performance should be the same as the Handbrake 720p files. 720p proxies are fine for single screen users and the small playback window. I use two 24" HD 1080p monitors with the second for full screen timeline preview so a 1080p proxy is better. If I had a UHD/4K monitor I would like to see full 4K resolution playback for best quality editing and color correction so that is the ultimate goal - 4K editing with 4K playback/preview.
    The basic problem with 4K MP4 editing is the codec. H.264 is highly compressed to save storage space on cameras but is not an edit friendly codec. It has to be decompressed (decoded) to individual frames for timeline edit. 1080p HD H.264 MP4 files worked fine on the timeline for most of us in PDR but hit the limits of most consumer PCs. Each 4K frame contains 4X the data as HD so our PCs choked. Most decoding is done by the CPU which cannot keep up with the playback framerate causing stutter/freezing. The higher the framerate (25p vs 50p) and the more layers added (eg PIP) the tougher is becomes for any edit software to playback smoothly. PDR also has Intel iGPU support with Quicksync. Intel users with an i7-7700 or latest i7-8700 have integrated Iris graphics GPU (iGPU) which enables powerful 4K H.264 (AVC) and H.265 (HEVC) GPU decoding for the timeline and encoding for fast 4K encoding/render so it would be interesting to see if PDR16 (I'm still using PDR14) users can have true 4K editing with 4K preview using the PDR16 Intel iGPU support. The Intel Iris iGPU also supports HDR color now available on UHD TVs.
    4K H.265 (HEVC) camera codec is here (GoPros and DJI Drones). It produces higher quality at the same bitrate than H.264 at HALF THE FILE SIZE so will be the future for capture and delivery including 4K TV. Compression is much higher so H.265 needs 10X MORE CPU computing power than H.264 for timeline decoding!! For users considering a PC upgrade (like me) for 4K, Intel may represent a significant 4K H.264 and H.265 decoding/encoding (edit/delivery) performance over AMD which has no Iris GPU and possibly save the cost of buying an expensive Nvidia or AMD GPU card.
    Other edit software also now use "edit friendly" intermediate codecs as an alternative to lower res H.264 proxies which sacrifice quality. These codecs retain the full source quality at lower compression rates for easier editing. Once very expensive to license and reserved for professional studios, they are now free and include ProRes (Apple) DnX AVid), and Cineform (Grass Valley). Lower compression means much larger proxy file sizes (up to 10X) but they are temporary files enabling high quality editing/playback at high resolution. It would be nice to see PDR add an intermediate codec option to "Shadow File" proxies.

    • @PDU_Tutorials
      @PDU_Tutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      2:55 - Shadow files were 720p

  • @WiljanWiljan
    @WiljanWiljan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Maliek, again another great video! was wondering however when you create a proxy file through PD, can you temporarily switch the proxy off for a certain clip if you want to color correct it and you want to see the original 4K resolution? also if you don't use proxy file at all, but lower the video preview resolution to eg HD, is this basically the same? because what is the relation (or not) between creating a proxy file vs lowering the preview resolution in PD?

    • @PDU_Tutorials
      @PDU_Tutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't change one file temporarily. You can turn off shadow files for the entire project and turn it back on.
      Shadow files are not the same as changing the preview quality. Shadow files are actual files with lower bitrate, file size. & resolution that are on your PC. When editing the program uses the shadow files rather than your original files. When you produce the video the program uses the original files.
      Preview quality is simply changing the quality of the preview as you scrub the timeline or playback the video. You are still using the original files when editing.

    • @WiljanWiljan
      @WiljanWiljan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video of very useful information. Thank you for the tips on the 4K editing with shadow files. It really helps speed things up. Just one question: What are the procedures to Up-Scale 1920x1080/60p FHD to 4K UHD using PowerDirector?
    Reason I ask is, 1) you're the best resource for PowerDirector online, and 2) I'm experimenting with slow motion in 4K but don't have a camera that shoots 4K at 60fps. Thus, I use 1080 at 60fps, to create Slo-Motion. My goal is to up-scale the slowmotion 1080 clips to 4K video content. I already know how to get slow motion content using 24fps HD video format. But I'm not sure how to up-scale these files properly with PowerDirector. I've seen some techniques for other software and get the gist of what's going on. But is there a preferred way to up-scale the HD to 4K for optimal quality in Powerdirector? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Maliek, I have finally bought two 4K cameras and try to look at my files using Powerdirector and following your tuto, I look at the properties of my files and the format is 3840 X 2160 and not 4096 X 2302 as you show. I have two sony AX53 and AX 1000V and I remembered having set the recording to the max 4K.
    Did I miss something ? Thank you for your help.

      @PDU_Tutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your camera manufacturer can offer different types of resolution and "call it" 4K.
      4096 x 2304 is “real or true 4K” sometimes referred to as cinema 4K. 3840 x 2160 is UHD 4K.

    Got a question Commander. First! Thank you for some great tutorials. Now, I shoot in 4k using drones. I've tried shadow stuff, converting etc. I make sure the files are the converted ones & not original. Now, why, when I edit, no matter what I do, the 4k video still looks like crap? I run a Win 7 Pro with GeForce 50Ti. No SSD however.

    • @PDU_Tutorials
      @PDU_Tutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      PowerDirector University .....I just read my previous. I should've explained it better. No, not using original files. I've converted using P.D.'s system and two other converters. But when I enter the converted files (from any source including Power Director) & try to edit, they still look like crap....very edgy, aliased etc. Some guy told me it could be the camera (Typhoon Q500+ drone)...possible. Anyway, thanks for trying to help. I've saved many of your instructive videos for reference! I'll figure it out.

    3:26 that’s the part I don’t get. I have a beast of a laptop: dell inspiron 6gb Nvidia 1070 card 32gb of ram and latest i7. When I don’t have shadow files selected, it skips while trying to edit files; when I put it into shadow file mode I could literally drop down files and begin editing them immediately while they are still yellow status... it makes zero sense, but that’s what it’s doing. Maybe someday soon I’ll make a video about this strange phenomenon; cause I can’t get it to work properly any other way. I have the latest power Director suite.

    • @CaliforniaPhantom
      @CaliforniaPhantom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I contacted cyberlink (terrible customer service) and they responded via email only saying that “maybe my card isn’t compatible” or maybe my integrated graphics wants to work with power Director and dedicated card doesn’t kick in - but when I checked system function while rendering 4K files on it I see the dedicated graphics card show resources being used maybe upto 12%. It’s a really strange unexplainable phenomenon, but it works so I’m just going to back away slowly and continue plugging out movies.
