    Dear Mrs. Harriet Tubman (Moses) You have been my spirit guide since the first time I saw your life story played by Ms. Cicely Tyson. I was 8yrs old. You were the definition of courage, honor and strength. You are who I always wanted to be. You are my bar I measure strength, determination, dignity, service, honor and God by. I remember as I watched your story night after night. It came on in 3parts. I was mystified by you, I remember thinking you must be a super hero. When you blacked out I thought maybe you were visiting heaven getting some more super strength. Or maybe God was telling you which way to go so you won't get caught. 40yrs later and I still look at you with a child's wonder and amazement. I still think of you as my spirit guide. I hope you see me and is proud of me. Just as I am so very proud of you. Maybe when I get to heaven you will be waiting for me. Maybe you will guide me to freedom the pearly gates. Maybe we will sip on coffee as I ask you a million questions, maybe you will tell of some of your adventures. Thank you for being the epitome of Courage, thank you for being my guardian angel. Thank you for being unwavering uncompromising in your stance for justice. Thank you Mrs. Harriet. I thank you deeply..

    Jeff you are incorrect! There are numerous documents to support that not only was the great Harriet Tubman an "Abductor," someone who actually went into slave territory to rescue enslaved Africans. But she was also, indeed, without question, a nurse, a cook, a spy and a scout for the Union Army.
    Specifically, as it relates to the "Cambahee River Raid" on June 2, 1863. She scouted the area ahead of the raid. Providing General Montgomery with valuable information about the "land mines" that were place in the water, to keep Union boats from passing through the area. She also provided a thorough scouting report on the plantations along the river as well.
    When the raid took place, SHE and a number of Colored troops went on land to rescue my ancestors! It is well documented in the newspapers of that day in bold headlines! Do the research! Outside of this, it is also well documented in Catherine Clinton's book "Harriet Tubman: Road To Freedom."
    Harriet Tubman was the first and only female to lead troops into battle during the Civil War (The Cambahee River Raid). And, just for the record, she was given a full military burial and is buried in a military cemetery...given full military honors! I rest my point!!

    • @boatin15
      @boatin15 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I suggest you learn the truth. Undocumented stories don't cut it. Show me primary sources that ever said she went into the interior. Show me where she "led" the troops. She played a vital role in the Department of the South, but not the story you are familiar with. Get the book Combahee River Raid and learn the real story.

      Harriet Tubman never received a military pension for her work w/ the Union as a spy...how she did receive a military pension was from her second husband, Nelson Davis, who was the 'official' veteran. She was barely paid $200 for her services while with the military.

    Very phenomenal woman.. She did alot of positive things alot of you haters wont never get to do... I applaud her for the work she did.. Its only obvious whatever she did made alot of African Americans lifes better then what it was... Nd she has documentaries, books as well as other things.. What do you have to look forward to other then being a hater and hating on a grown ass woman who help free some slaves...

      I learned about her when I was a teenager. I was the san Francisco public library and dropped a book by accident; when I picked it up her name was on the cover. It was a fascinating story. If I had some kind of polítical power; I would name her the first female soldier in the united states.

    • @416mcp
      @416mcp 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      bklynAtrain you are kidding me? I went to school in the 70' and 80s and I was taught about her. (I am white an live in a rural area that is mostly white people)
      Edit--I want to add as a kid when I learned about her I thought she was so brave.. as a kid when I first heard about the underground railroad , I use to think the underground railroad was actual trains that went underground, freeing slaves. I cant think of a better choice to put on our money.

    • @bklynAtrain
      @bklynAtrain 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      416mcp Not kidding. I was never taught about her in school. Being from the baby boomer generation, a lot of things were not taught or brought out to the light like it is today.

    • @416mcp
      @416mcp 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      bklynAtrain I am the end of the baby boomer generation, beginning of X, I think they we are tweeners.They taught us about the underground railroad, I think in reading class. I really remember being surprised the underground railroad were not real trains. I probably knew this stuff b/c of my mom too. I remember watching movie on TV about Harriet Tubman. We also watched the mini series Roots.We watched the PBS series on segregation. My mom told me the story of when my uncle and his friend went down south and sat in the back of the bus with black people (50 or 60's). He didn't know anything about segregation. He didn't know why people were looking at him. For some reason always made me laugh. We are white northerners. My mom and dad grew up in depression and we didn't have much money. Mom I guess you would say believed in social justice but very nonassuming. I could in vision her being the person. that if she were in back in the day of Harriet, would not have been a leader, but if she saw a run away slave she would never tell a soul and let them get away (maybe with a little food to tide them over)
      I was also taught in school how the Indians were taken advantage off, separated from their families, and about the Trail of Tears. People will post that they never heard of that too. I can not believe my school was that great and teaching us about history (we were taught good things too and said the pledge of allegiance every day in grade school). Sometimes I think people just were paying attention or forgot. I know there are many things that didn't interest me that I forgot about.

      416mcp We did learn about slavery and runaway slavery, but not much. I learned that stuff by watching Roots. LOL. Your parents did a great job raising you. They set a fine example for many.

      bklynAtrain Roots was a good mini series. I still remember Kuntu Kinte. I think there is a scene where he is being whipped and he yells his name if Kuntu Kinte.

    Jeff, once again you are wrong! In addition to The Commonwealth, there were several newspapers that wrote stories on Harriet Tubman, Colonel James Montgomery and the Black troops who took part in the raid! Through all her great successes, Harriet Tubman was very humble about her vast accomplishment!
    It seems to me that you have an resentment towards her and a distain for the facts! Read Catherine Clinton's book "Harriet Tubman: Road To Freedom" and other biographies on her life. Hopefully you will understand what most historians understand, that she was a giant!
    Also, in closing, I mentioned in my previous post that James Montgomery was a Colonel. But, this is not about him. This is all about the great HarrietTubman! And, though you may try to diminish her greatness, it will never work!
