    I don't know why alot of the chainsaw shops won't look at Homelite or McCulloch or any older saws, there so easy to work on, now they just look at you crazy if not a Stihl or Husqvarna, If you can't work on all different kinds of saw's and you only stick to two name brands your not a chainsaw shop, Love your videos Chainsaw Guy

      The old Homelites are one of the few vintage saws that still hold there own against the modern stuff. I would not want to use one in a profession, but for getting firewood....... I would take one over a home depot special, any day.
      The good saw shops with owners who have 30 plus years under there belt will work on these.

    My dad still has my grandpaws old blue. My husband and I want to fix it up amd use it ( we LOVE cutting trees, use to do it when no other work available around here). It was bought new in 1969, and I specifically remember the sounds and smells of when daddy use to use it every late summer early fall ( we cut wood for our wood burning heater, and it was a way of life for a long cold winter).
    I am going to try to make sure everything is cleaned, useable and put a new chain and bar on it. It hasnt been ran in probably 20 years ! To me, there would be Nothing like getting “ old reliable “ back up and running! …. Especially since I am excited about not only the nostalgia, but it is a family way of life, and more generations to share our stories with!

      Great Story Valor,
      I have some memories of wood cutting with my family in the early 60’s.
      We used an old McCulloch 250 and drove a 1947 truck into the mountains to get our firewood,
      Great times!

    Just worked on one of those at the shop. All I had to do was clean the points and she fired right up. Good ol saw for sure.

    Hey, I've got one of these that used to be my grandad's. It probably hasn't been used in more than 5 years. Any advice on where to start with getting it running again? It seems like it really needs to be cleaned and the fuel is probably really old. I haven't tried to crank it yet - I wanted to know if there is anything I should check before I do. Thanks!

    I have a 73 just like this one... I put a mod on it but I believe the coil is bad. Do you know if any replacement coils available?

    Many shops dont wwnt to work on these no more because of the lack of a chainbrake and indeed a lot of parts that are available for them. I love working on them personally. The only fellas who will work on these are the oldtimers and people who own em

    Why do you always pull the recoil rope when turning off the saw? Just curious.

      Compression in the combusting chamber allows the crankshaft to strike backwards when you put the kill switch down and the RPM ratio is low. The hit may destroy the pull cord and the handle. But if you pull the handle some inches out, then you can soften that strike with your fingers. Only the big saws suffer from this. Today's saws with 35 ccs are care free.

    I was just wondering do you have air filters and gas caps in stock? I have a blue XL-12, an XL Automatic and an XL-12 with the chain brake that I run regularly. Was wondering what the parts availability for these old saws are. Thanks, Chris.

      all you need to know is part numbers then type them into eBay. usually someone in the world is selling old stock or aftermarket parts.

    I just finished rebuilding the motor on my old blue super xl with that same bar, what length chain are you running? I've got a 20" on mine for now but i had to run the adjustment just about all the way out and even with it all the way in an 18" is too short.

    If that coil goes bad a Tecumseh ignition coil will fit, part # 30560A...20 bucks on amazon. The center square hole is SLIGHTLY bigger on the Tecumseh coil but the clip holds it on...you can put a little silicone on it if you like...I did not. Then just hook up your chip and away you go. I am using my blue xl-12 now and it works PERFECT.

      Thank you I’m working on my xl12 at the moment been trying to widen my knowledge and obtain more saws that are old I’m only 20 and love cutting trees next I’m gonna work on my 1989 266 husquvarna and I hope I can get one of the old 390s hopefully 394

      @@rhettb574 Good on ya. The xl12 is a GREAT saw to start with. Get yourself a GOOD compression gauge first.....no sense in going any further if you got a low compression reading.....re-ring it or use it for parts. Compression first....muffler off second and look at your piston and rings for any scoring...a little is not the end of the world but badly scuffed rings are a very BAD sign. Most, if not ALL, damage will be on the exhaust side so....muffler off and look in.

    do you have a video on replacing fuel line?

    • @gordonquickstad
      @gordonquickstad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yah, I replaced mine because the old one was turning to goo. The replacement I bought was hard to get in - too stiff and too big. I did some trimming somehow (too long ago to remember) and got it to fit.

    I have XL-12 I grew up learning techniques from my dad. It currently has stripped spark plug threads. Capable of fixing and how? I’d love to get this baby purring again esp for my dad. Please let me know.

    What does the module do?

    • @TheCrittercam001
      @TheCrittercam001 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The module eliminates the need for points in older equipment. Makes the saws and whatever else start easier too.
