  • Welcome to Rugby Pod Stories. In this new short series, we explore some of the most iconic moments in the history of rugby by speaking to the people who were there. In this first episode, we explore what happened to the New Zealand team ahead of the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final in South Africa, with first-hand accounts from players, coaches, doctors, media managers and journalists. Were the All Blacks poisoned ahead of the final? What effect did this have on the team? And if they were deliberately poisoned, who could have been responsible? We look at some of the possible scenarios by speaking to the main protagonists from both sides. If you enjoy this episode, please let us know on social media or share it with friends.

If there was such a conviction that they were deliberately poisoned then why not have an investigation? Surely there would be incriminating evidence?! Maybe some players were feeling ill from eating seafood on the highveld but from zero evidence we must all believe that there was a deliberate plan to poison the team and if it wasn't for that then they would have just run through the Boks that day. I mean, come on!

Honestly, reserved judgement for the podcast, but after listening to it it just felt like a bit of a whining sessions. Clearly has a specific narrative and not really "from both sides" as The Rugby Podcast suggests. Also focusing on moments to paint an overall picture of the world cup to suit their story.

NZ has always had the win at all cost approach. After the 1949 whitewash they complained about the refereeing. In 1956, constant PLANNED foul play and underhanded tactics was their style. (THEY HAD TO BEAT SOUTH AFRICA AFTER THEIR SERIES LOSS IN 1937 AND THE WHITEWASH IN 1949 come hell or high water) in 1956, Skinner, was brought out of retiremen (heaveyweight boxer) to subdue the Springboks by any means neccessary. The All Blacks dished it out, but they whined about it when they received it (Tiny White), and their version was blasted all over the media. Skinner had the audacity to hand his All Black tie back in objection to Richard Loe's foul play. There was the Sid Nomis/Fergie McCormick incident after Cottrell was legally demolished by Jansen in 1970, dirty play by Bill Bush and provoking tactics by Batty in 1976,( also complaints about refereeing), dirty play and violence in 1981, Shaw and Frazer, the Andy Haden line-out farce against Wales, Dalton and Knight niggling, provoking play in 1986(Cavaliers - they both got sorted out quickly enough) and then you had the King - Sean Fitzpatrick - almost took Naas Botha's head of in the Springbok return in 1992 and the famous Johan Le Roux incident in 1993. Similar to what happened in the recent test between Her Majesty's Pride and Australia. Clearly the English Lock instigated the whole situation but the Ozzie gut the brunt of it, and so did Fitzpatrick to Le Roux. And like the alleged food poisoning, the biased media had field day with these allegations because newspaper sales and tv ratings were important (not to forget Mike Brewer's book) irrespective of the concequences. Athletes do not compete when they are unfit, boxers do not compete when they are unfit, rugby or soccer players do not compete when they are unfit - they are replaced. They had a squad and plans could be made, and they should have reported it beforehand. If you look at the game it is surprising that people that were "doubled up" in pain, and "could not walk" was running around in the final and contributing to a hell of a game. One does not keep a catastrophe like this quiet, knowing what the consequences could be - especially people who has the winning at all cost attitude. Before the 1995 RWC South Africa dominated every nation they played against in terms of win ratio and test series played, including the All Blacks, and maybe what Louis Luyt said at the function should be seen for what it is: The first true World Champions! They were succesful in their first try, and they beat the historically SECOND best side at that time in the final - remember the historically BEST team did not compete in 1987 and 1991.

They won the 1st World Cup by a drop goal
against a team who only the day before, most of them were unable to train and none of them could run.
Whether or not it was deliberate food poisoning, hardly a level playing field, was it?

A couple of examples to indicate your bias; Bismarck du Plessis demolished Dan Carter with a LEGAL tackle, the All Blacks pile into the Springboks without reason. Bismarck is red carded - SA plays with 14 men for 60 minutes and loses the game. Disciplinary committee overturns the decision a week later re red card. Carter as well as NZ commentators agreed on live commentary prior to the hearing, but the "horse has bolted" as they say. Bismarck's play was perfectly legal SO there was NO reason for the All Blacks to behave like that and attack the Boks! Where there any action taken against them? NONE! That is cheating as well as dirty in my book. - Eben Etsebeth is touted as a dirty player, especially by NZ and UK media, but have you ever seen him throw a punch, kick or put his knee in some-one's face? (like Itoje on de Allende during the last Lions tour, or grab the opposition players by the balls like Sheridan and Marler ) . Yes, he may have ruffled a few feathers, but as result of intense provocation, or in defense of his teammates. I agree there instances with Scalk Burger( he did once what Loe did several times) and Bakkies Botha headbutting the NZ scrumhalf after he pulled him back by the jersey without the ball, negating a possible try scoring opportunity(CHEATING) - but he deserved it, as the ref was oblivious. Obvious provocation - be careful when playing with the Lion's balls, as they say here in Africa. Then there was the sanction on Bakkies injuring the poor puffy Lions prop in legal maul ( the legality ofvwhich was confirmed by the said prop afterwards)but rugby players are a breed and every nation has their bad apples, but South Africa no more than the rest. What I can say though is South Afrca is a tough place, this is Lion country, even tigers battle here.....
As for cheating.....a whole diffrent story - three countrys has forever battled in that category for the crown...South Africa is not even in the running.......

@@jonnygeorge7325 I stated in my comment above that prior to the '95 RWC SA had been historically the best rugby team in the world. The had a winning ratio in excess of 50% against all nations they played - including composite teams like World XV's, the NZ Cavaliers in 1986 ( Which was the All Black group chosen for the 1985 tour to SA which was cancelled, sans Kirwan and Kirk, in disguise, and was THOROUGHLY beaten 3-1. 10 of the players from that Cavalier side represented the All Blacks in the 1987 world cup.) - INCLUDING the All Blacks. I apologise - it should be up to, and INCLUDING the '95 RWC. It took the All Blacks SEVENTY FIVE years to officially break even with SA regarding test match results, after they won 4 - 1 in 1996, with some assistance beyond playing - one has to take into account Fitzpatrick's advisory role to the match officials..... Unofficially, ( including the result from the annhialated Cavalier team in 1986) NZ broke level with SA's winning percentage in 1999, which prevailed in 2000, and results going south for SA from 2001 onwards. If having a better winning ratio against all official teams they played against since their loss against Britain in 1893, up to the start of 1996 (103 years) does not mean historically the best - I do not know what does. In all SA played international rugby for 131 years, of which they were superior in terms of results for ALL opposition, for that WHOLE period, except all NZ( the Springboks started playing against them in 1921), teams, which was for the 78 year period!
Like rugby up to 2000, the Springboks have to date been the best team at Rugby World Cups since their admission. Clobbering then thenreigning world champs in their opening games in '95, and '07, with exception being 2019.
Played seven, won 3 Cups, a 43% successrate, and has won EVERY final they played in. No other team can say the same. The first as a NOVICE team in 1995(at the start of which, the Boks were rated 9th) against the All Blacks in the final, during which final Fitzpatrick's advisory role was not taken seriously, and two Bronze( the fiirst in 1999, against the All Blacks) medals. In 2007 and 2019, we played against opposition in the quarter final, semi final and final that qualified for them, and won. In other words, all teams that start a RWC has a chance to make it to the knock-outs and final. Those who do not make it is simply NOT good enough, and fall by the wayside, like unfortunately NZ did in '91, '95, '99, '03, '07 and '19.
So factually, it does not seem like you have a clue regarding the history of rugby as a whole, and even less pertaing to the World Cup.
We have not played the All Blacks yet in this RWC, but I hope they make it to the latter stages - we might get a thriller like '95 final or the 2 point semi-final in 2015.
We must just get "Suzie" some flight tickets......
