Assalam alaykum brother. Is there an email i can reach you with? I have a thesis document i got from our university library that i would like to share with you to shed some light on some history of yemeni who came to kenya in early 1900s in mombasa. It wasnt my field of study but i was curious to research on the history of my yemeni grandparents who settled in kenya. It was done by a student in 1980s for her masters degree and she actually managed to gather some good historical knowledge despite the lack of proper documentation of the history. I feel it can be beneficial to add up on east african muslim influences and assimilation into the society.
Those skyrise buildings should have been built 5 km to 10 km radius away to emphasise the reverence of Kaaba monolith.

many Saudi themselves didn't like it so does many Muslims in the world but non of us have any says on it because of the Prince. Any scholars, ministers adn citizen of the kingdom that criticized what ever he does will be jail or silence. even Muslims outside of Saudi were ban form going to do the Hajj if they are know to be criticizing the royal family publicly. If they want to built it outside from the Al haram complex its not a problem, but this site is sacred and has always been sacred. If that tower fall down some day it will ruined the whole complex.

One thing that I can add to this conversation is just the mere aspect of "logistics". I did my Hajj in the 1990's and back then there were very few structures around the Haram. So even though the Masjid which held about 750,000 to 1 million people when full, it quite literally emptied in 15 minutes and this without causing anguish to the individuals. Now, with all of those building right up next to the Haraam, and with the extension that is used, the Mosque has even more people in it, and it doesn't empty for nearly an hour, and it is very crushing to get out. Add to this, that many of the doors are closed, which makes it even worse, and barriers are moved and changed while "herding" the worships like as if they were cattle doesn't lend itself to the uplifting experience as most would expect of this beautiful site that to a Muslim has such a deep meaning.
What I've described isn't even during Hajj, but those experiences that I have had while doing Umrah in these past few years.
And the getting around isn't just for getting in and out of the Masjid, but just getting around in that area, to use the Wudu facilities, going around to get to the other side, use to be a lot easier, but now it is logistically challenging. I really feel sorry for the older people, for females and especially the poor.
Also as an architect and a Muslim I completely agree that the Kabba and elharam should be accentuated not dwarfed by surrounding buildings

At long last someone who agreed with me, I have had some extreme backlash against my objections about the Haram, my view were purely based on our Beloved Prophet PbuH , he was the humblest man with the purest soul, Makkah should represent modesty, humanity and kept that serenity and authenticity not Hollywood and RAZZMATAZZ, Saudi is vast, there were no reason to build all skyscrapers around Makkah, it’s an eyesore and I personally think it’s extremely DISRESPECTFUL

I appreciate this video and the thought behind it and I know it bears no ill will towards Saudi Arabians nor their government but lets not forget that in 1926 King Abdulaziz (may God have mercy upon his soul) invited all arab and muslim leaders to help aid with the maintaince and preservation of the grand mosque and Kaa'ba because its for all muslims, and to no one's surprise none of them helped with even a Riyal and some even suggested that britian should mandate it or the united nations. Few years later God blessed us with the discovery of crude oil which helped us develop rapidly and our first priority was the maintance and develpoment of the two grand mosques. My point is you can give your opinions and all the suggestions you want but don't talk as if we are doing it wrong, no other nation could have done a fraction of what we did to the holy mosques and history is my witness check out the expansions of the msoques over the years and you will find out what I am talking about.
Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful commentary. The discussion is not critical but simply analytical "how can it be done better". The key consideration being to perhaps create a space around the Kaabah beyond which the malls and hotels can be reached by connected transport.
The Kaabah is timeless and the focal point of reference for all of us. Allah will reward the government for it's commitment and service however if advice is not admissible then improvement may not be possible.
They should've built those structures like 3-5 km away. You don't feel Haram the way it used to be. People busy taking pictures, selfies and videos of structures instead of focusing on the real issue. Total distractions which we don't need
Perfect analogy regarding making solah on outskirts so you don't get stuck trying to get out of the Haram, just to continue shopping. My advice to my younger self, don't focus on the shopping, focus on being in the Haram and ibadah

They have been doing this since last 25 years to build skyscrapers all around the Holy Kaba. It is really horrible that they're making it a business culture while removing all spiritual sense. It saddens me to see that your views are driven by emotions rather than reality.
Firstly, regarding the holy mosques, it seems you overlook that the number of pilgrims has increased much faster than the available capacity to serve/cater. Moreover, you do not seem to consider the expertise and equipment required to execute such large-scale projects, during the last few decades.
Secondly, the lands and properties in question belong to private owners with legal deeds. Sharia law permits these owners to benefit from what is rightfully theirs.
In terms of aesthetics and design, it is important to note that the Muslim nations worldwide are maturing, and classical architectural designs are becoming more appreciated. there is no doubt that the people built the surroundings with their best intentions.
You claim to be a historian, yet you seem to forget that cities like Baghdad, Cairo, Qairouan, and Rusafa (in Iraq, Syria, and Andalusia) were all built from scratch. Please do not underestimate the prosperity that building new cities can bring, as it expands both wealth and communities. Your example of Dubai is not entirely relevant, as I'm sure even the Emiratis would have a different perspective. Regardless, Saudi Arabia and Egypt are much more established states with significant populations.
Egyptians have lived in dense concentrations along the Nile for the last 50 years, despite modern tech, while millions of acres to the west remain underutilized.
Neom is a project that we, the Saudis, are deeply invested in and want to see succeed. I urge you to be optimistic about the future of Arab and Muslim nations, as the tides are turning in our favor, Insha'Allah.
If you are sincerely concerned, I urge you to come to Saudi Arabia and be part of the positive change. Saudi Arabia is genuinely becoming more influential, and the population remains true to its high morals and values. If you are truly genuine, we welcome the expertise and knowledge of those who want to see the Islamic world grow stronger and who have an interest in their Muslim brothers and sisters. If you are living in the West, what is keeping you from moving and building your vision in Saudi Arabia or Egypt?

Regardless of what you may assume, there are undoubtedly people working tirelessly for the sake of Allah. Which nothing describes better than that of the shopkeeper who closes for the Salat and goes to pray whether in Makkah or else where. People who recognize that Allah is provider and their is Abudunance. Thus, prioratizing His call and halting trade and profits to remind themselves that to Allah they shall return.
If your thinking about the future as you say then how will you expand the grounds of the kaabah in the future as the population will explode astronomically, the diameter of the grounds as of now supports 4 million visitors a year what about when that reaches 12 million?

Sadness is an emotion and you began with this in your first sentence. Do not be sad or feel offended, this series is contrarian and designed to challenge popular narratives. The question of practicality was clearly raised and answered in an appropriate manner by suggesting that some form of space or ring be created within a reasonable radius to allow for the pilgrims to enjoy the sight without being confronted by shopping malls etc. This is reasonable and fair commentary, it doesn't take away from the reality that there are indeed millions of pilgrims that need accomodation, but a good transportation system coupled by simpler construction could be a solution. Does the Kaabah need to be surrounded by 5 star hotels and mega commercial centres?
We appreciate what Saudi is doing and what they have to manage on behalf of the Muslim world, this is not lost to anyone would be a challenge to any nation.
As for the historical instances where Arabs built cities from nothing, that was discussed in the previous episode and covered in sufficient detail.
Do not be offended or take this as unfair criticism, it is a healthy and necessary discussion that needs to be raised as the rapid pace at which change is happening concerns the entire Muslim world, not just the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
After all, the Hajj is an obligation on every Muslim and the Kaabah is the centre of attention globally, not just for the Saudis.

We are all muslims, one ummah, and the harameein are muslim's property not saudi's . The crazy amount of money that is required to make hajj it's ridiculous. They need to change that instead of focusing on "modernizing Saudi Arabia" with those projects. it's sad that people have to wait ages and pay crazy amounts of money just to fulfill an obligation. Be humble, and recognize that.
The majority of Muslim jurists hold the view that it is disliked to decorate the mosques with gold or silver, engrave them, write on them, plaster them, or do any other thing that might distract the worshipper from his prayer. Ibn ʻAbbaas may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, said, “I have not been ordered to build high, lofty, plastered mosques.” [Ibn Hibbaan, Abu Daawood, and Ibn Maajah]
These buildings distract the worshippers. Keep it simple and let the muslims just fulfill their obligation.

It's easy to make imagination and architectural dreams, but we seem to forget 2 driving forces that Saudi and the Muslim league considers when making expansions. One Islam is growing rapidly and Saudi is suppose to build enough space to welcome a minimum of pilgrims for Haj and Omrah where the visitors are growing beyond expectations. Second, Kabbbah is just a place where we visit for spirituality and direction for our prayers. based on these, Saudi has to allocate billions of dollars periodically not at once. These result in the only solution, tall buildings to accommodate as many as possible in the most recent and safest ways.
For anyone that an make a difference I think security of pilgrems entering the mosque and preservation of the Kaaba should be the focus of builders

That is true and should never be denied. There were also inhabitants of what is now the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia who were invited to take Saudi nationality and renounce their other passport, some accepted others refused. When oil was discovered and the country became prosperous, many of those who refused regretted their decision - many their descendants are still unable to secure the Saudi passport to this day (some were granted amnesty while others got it through marriage but those are not representative of the majority).

The thing is that we Muslims feel that haram belongs to us but ksa is sovereign state and sadly they are in physical possession of the haram while we are mere tourist for them.
KSA is only a facilitator the Haram is administered by Awqaf. Saudi government doesn’t prohibit any person from performing their religion duties. To ensure that pilgrims can complete Hajj issues permits accordingly simply for the sheer number of pilgrims. For Umrah you can visit much easier and throughout the year. We don’t see you as tourists we see guests of Allah

The king decides how to administer his land including the haram. Awqaf is not independent of the king and neither is the construction of those tall buildings overlooking the haram. It all belongs to the king and he decides wat he deems fit. We as pilgrims have no right in the matter of which building goes where. So if the king demolishes thr house of Khadija a.s.and builds a toilet on it, we have no right to question it.

Why the hotel rents in mecca go up during Ramadan and haj, rents doesn't go up in Jerusalem during Christmas or easter...why saudi government is allowing this.
SubhanAllah. I'm not a big fan of skycrapers but we also have to think about the growing number of pilgrims each year, which automatically (through it's growth) demands (or screams for) a surplus of offers.
It is often better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
I mean it would be better to move everything away from the haram by 1 kilometer or so which is a 12 min walk or 3 min drive, in the future 50 years from now or so the haraam will need a huge expansion so they will be left with no choice but knock down the buildings near it and expand the grounds of the haraam

So so true. It’s a shame because Islamic/ Arab architecture is celebrated throughout the world. But in Mecca this is completely tree out the window. It literally looks like a casino city like Vegas or Macau. Instead it should be inspired by Muscat and such other classic cities.

Excellent content and conversation. However, a very significant point is missed. It is in front of the creator we're all one... irrespective of our worldly titles or accumulation of wealth yet these monoliths outside of Ka'aba isolate certain niches, the rich, the powerful, the connected... of course it drains Khushu it also creates boundaries where none exist, or should exist. A prayer inside the haram is a equal to a 100,000 outside yet those to rub shoulders among their own bubbles congregate in ivory towers on the periphery. It shudders my conscience.
The two motivators to do an act either are voluntary or coerced. A voluntary clean heart will be a target for a preying looking to burn that feel for graciousness. We haven't thought these out and I'm afraid created a place of conflict.

There is a matte that It might be slightly off-topic, which I would like to bring here on table and which I have been reflecting on the decision to massive renwement that was going on the holy mosque beside the tall buildings and other changes coming up in replacement of more important islamic historical sights.
During a debate with some brother on this topic , I raised a question about the changes that have taken place in Mecca over the last 80 years. It is surprising to note that instead of preserving the ‘more’ valuable heritage and culture, this “got out of hand” trend of renewal leading to the disappearance of historical sites.
For instance, the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has been transformed into a library as also many significant cultural and heritage sites, such as the houses of prominent Islamic figures and early Muslim companies, no longer exist let alone their original form.
I believe this leaded that us as future generations have not the opportunity to experience the authentic historical settings.
One argument beside the growing numbers of Muslims presented in favor of these changes is that the علماء were afraid that Muslims would be more likely to visit these locations for worship if they were kept in their original state.
However, I find this rationale to be questionable. Unfortunately, a similar situation exists in Medina, where luckily not all the historical sites have been lost. But over time and this madness of modernisation it’s a matter of time.
On the other hand, I’m strongly surprised when we compare this approach to how the government has preserved the village of Ben Quraydah, leaving it untouched we can appreciate the value of maintaining historical authenticity. Not even a single stone has been moved in Benu Quraydah, allowing visitors today to experience and connect with the past during tours of the area.
I know before jumping on me here saying that the two areas cannot be compared, but taking into account the historical value, this could have been taken into account if there was a well-thought-out plan.
Anyway it’s quite a subject that also raises so many questions.
Haj and umra is highly commercialised, am at the point of abdondoning haj, £8000-£12000 for haj for what ? Where is the money going ?
Your plane tickets food hotels transportation and guide, the Saudi govt doesn’t charge you sht and if it was up to me as a Saudi I would charge you money for the facilities and infrastructure I payed for as a Saudi govt

All this towers and shops and restaurants are built for the millions of Muslims who visits this holy city every day and it’s all to make it easy and safe for them and for your question WHY because why not it’s not haram and it helps the Muslims ,Muslims are the fastest growing population and I find it very weird that you guys commenting on it may Allah reward the leaders who did it may Allah protect and preserve them and guide them towards what benefits the ummah

However the types of events that take place is these large structures, is what I despise.
sadly going to Makkah has also become a photo op for especially young people to get the perfect social media post instead of focusing on the experience and blessing of being in the Haram.

yes, high rise building around Kaaba draws attention ..at one point it becomes a tourist spot. as a sacred place best to keep it peaceful and focus. o watched this tv series -Foundation, there is an episode where the "SPIRAL" showed and its similar with Mecca and also by getting near there is this a path counter clockwise..but whats in the middle instead of Kaaba its a cave called "mothers womb" and inside that cave there is a water formation. being in the middle of the desert, one aspect of the spiral being a sacred place is the water inside the cave, for thousands of years the water inside the cave never runs dry. as a sacred and to show respect, people avoid building something around this spiral not at least from a greater far. to test your faith, as a pilgrim you shall walk ten's of kilometers to reach the spiral. without water, food and rest even must leave any inorganic device from you only a piece of cloth that will cover your body... same with Umrah. and this will do ounce in a life time.
There should be no building higher than the Kaba for at least a few km in distance from the Kaba .This is out of respect for it,these were the type of practices during the Ottoman period.
It's a matter of having good etiquette with the K'abah. Something that has became very rare in modern times. I have heard a couple of Shaykhs say that in the pre modern times, people used to erect buildings that did not over arche the Haram.

I completed my Umrah in 2023. As a native of Asia, I can't even afford to stay at those luxury hotels or shop at those expensive shops. Alhamdulillah, I am not sad. RasulAllah was poor and I would rather be poor to come close to Allah instead of being rich & full of vanity. The peace & serenity of being inside haram, to see the Kaaba can't be put in words. As far as those exclusive buildings are concerned, I simply don't care. However, I see many muslim immigrants working at those places, I am happy they are earning halal income for their families. So I won't complain.

Rubbish content. We do not worship the kaabah. The magnificence of the buildings around the kaabah does not take away the beauty of the kaabah for any believer.
Only those who are jealous of what has been achieved in the haram would make this an issue. People go there for ibadah. The haram does not include the masjid alone. It is the whole of Mecca. So there is nothing wrong in beautifying a city that is loved by muslims while facilitating for the ummah.
