Honestly one of the top 10 episodes of the series. Not only is Natalie giving birth with her mother at her side but she’s also finally telling her mom where she screwed up with Nat and her brothers while also reconnecting with her as a fellow mother. I mean how do you not get emotional during the scene when Donna is telling the stories of how she gave birth to her children? But what I really loved is that Donna said she admits that she’s NOT ok and that she is trying get better.
I appreciate what you’re saying as there’s always been some unresolved tension between the two but it was way too drawn out and boring. The entire episode essentially revolving around this one particular scene was overkill. There’s obviously a lot of issues between Nat and her mom but they just made it seem like they were trying to fix everything in one episode. I’m still watching season 3 right now but ultimately nothing significant is happening and I never do thus but I had to pause this episode half way through.
Abby and Jamie absolutely knocked it out of the park. Abby is a great actor, but to have an absolute rock star veteran like Jamie across from you must have been something amazing. I had to keep reminding myself who she was, because I was totally getting lost in her character. This episode and Forks are my favorite so far, and it's close.
16:23 Donna’s the happiest we’ve seen her in the show and it’s with the Fak brothers. Such a great moment. The way that Fak really does live up to being Carmy’s best friend is so great.
Probably the most realistic portrayal of labour I've ever seen on film. It took me right back. The near-instant wavering on the epidural made me laugh, I did exactly the same lol. Their acting was insane! Natalie's actress killed it!
As someone with a mom who very much resembles Donna (except the alcohol part), this episode hits even harder because I know I probably won't be able to get closure like Natalie did because my mom isn't aware of the impact she had on me with her abusive behaviours growing up. This episode is just a wish of mine that I've given up on getting fulfilled in my lifetime because it's too hard for older parents (especially in my country) to self-reflect and realize the impact they had on their kid's mental health and their whole life. Also, Whenever the song plays, tears just start to flow. I don't even know how many times I've watched this episode, but I just can't stop getting emotional whenever that song plays.
IT IS NEVER TOO LATE BRO. YOU CAN STILL DO THE THING IF YOU REALLY WANT TO. WE ARE ALL HUMAN AT THE END OF THE DAY, IRRESPECTIVE OF WHERE YOU WERE BORN
I totally agree with you. Donna in Fishes gave me flashbacks to my mom (minus the drinking). But my mom never would have had the realization of how badly her mental illness affected me. She would have made my labor all about herself, since she was Borderline and a narcissist. I never had kids because I wanted to end the cycle of abuse. This episode made me kind of angry and sad, because that type of turn doesn't happen in real life.
My sister didn't really like this episode when we were binging this season. But I really liked it, both Jaime Lee Curtis and Abby Elliot were fucking great in this episode. It's definitely one of my favorites of this season.
Funny thing is, just reached this episode myself, a day after JLC won her Emmy for Guest Appearance in 'Fishes'. Now just gotta wait a year for her next one.
Stuff like this is so interesting to watch. I feel so uncomfortable with scenes with parents like this because I don’t have a good relationship with my folks, so I can’t imagine ever sharing those intimate moments like this. But man this was such a good emotional episode for the side characters
Natalie talked about her insecurities because DD asked her why Sugar didn't tell her that she was pregnant. Answering that isn't simple, so Natalie explained what's woring with her, how fucked her mental health is, because her childhood and her mom caused all that. I know it always seems a little unfair to blame everything on the parents, but in the end they are the cause for like 90% of our programming. Natalie never felt good enough to be unconditionally loved by her mother and now as an adult she always thinks that everything is her fault, everyone is blaming her for shit and no one will just lover her for who she is. That's why she's afraid of Pete eventually leaving, doesn't matter if it's rational or not, it's extremely and painfully real in her mind. As Sugar said, she wants her mom around, she just doesn't want those things that hurt her. Everything about that conversation felt so real, Jamie Lee Curties and Abby Elliott did such amazing jobs, I would love to see them to get multiple award nominations just for that episode.
The Computer told them they didn't need a phone to the restaurant. And you'd think these days people would have a smart watch connected to their phone, so even with the phone in the locker, the watch would still be connected. Just my thought. And the guys who work in the front of the restaurant don't have phones on them?
Hii, loved your reaction as always. You should check out "my lady jane". It's a great series and I would love to hear what you have to say about that one.
I really liked this episode but I hated the fact that no one from the restaurant was at the hospital at the end except for the Faks, who had way too much screentime this season. I get why they didn't, but I would have loved to have seen just one tiny scene of Carmy with Nat, Donna and the baby instead.
@@hellfish2309 I think that’s why he will rely on her for everything and compensate her appropriately. It seems she goes for something she wants but when she gets it it’s not what she thought it would be so she moves on. I just hope if she leaves The Bear that she’ll find what she’s looking for.
@@ElleKayGee everything presented about the guy shows he is blowing smoke about how much autonomy and authorship he will really present to Syd should she sign with him; love them or hate them, Carmey and David Fields aren’t mendacious or deceptive about who they are to their cooks, whereas Chef Adam is presented to the audience as two-faced even accounting for character perspectives
@@hellfish2309 hmm… do you think it will be a disaster? I at least don’t think it will run as smoothly as he says because this will be his first restaurant. She needs to realize she won’t have it easy no matter where she goes because her profession is hectic; but he is making it seem like the grass is greener on his side on the fence.
“Forks” was an easier write; “Ice Chips” must have been a real challenge to write and direct, and I don’t think they quite nailed it: JLC was giving big and loud in “Fishes”, but I don’t think they quite dialed her right in “Ice Chips”
@@Luke-cu7bf Lol no, because it's just badly made. There are much brilliant showings like "Free Churro" in Bojack Horseman, or episode 3 of Horace & Pete, or even the movie "My Dinner With Andre" which rely on the performances of just 1-2 characters but they all manage to hold your attention from the start to finish. This one is just boring af, but people like you who are just fans of fandom and not the show itself are unable to handle criticism of your beloved thing because you take it as an attack on yourself.
@@HectorTWE I’m a big fan of this show. And this episode perfectly portrayed this mother daughter relationship especially when we know how rocky it is. Why does this one not keep your attention? Why is it boring? Would love to know why…….

That needle drop at 'call mom' is the stuff of legends.
First time watching all I kept doing was saying "Call Mom." over and over until she did.

This Episode is simply beautiful.
Nat has some great moments this season and her having this episode with her mom is simply amazing to witness.

Eric and that Forrest Gump reminder. WHY😂
Lol
I can't stop laughing at it now

fr i was honestly so happy to see this, quite informative in a way to see just how much many mothers struggle while in labour

this episode ties with Napkins as my favorite of the season. it's so good! Jamie Lee Curtis had better win an Emmy for her role on this show.
This was my favorite episode!! Amazing acting, I felt like I was in the room with them!
With the cameras so close to their faces, no wonder you felt like that
this is the one i was waiting for :)
This episode is amazing
Easily my favourite from S3, beautiful TV
One of my favourite episodes of the show! Force of nature
I thought Jamie Lee did a great job channeling Michaels energy, I see A LOT of him in her performance.
I like to imagine the writer had fun figuring out what order Natalie would phone people in.

The Forrest Gump joke had me laughing my butt off😂
The way she has to mentally prepare for calling her Mom is so fucking real.
Eric i think about that every time i hear a sound like that
Such a powerfully beautiful episode! Healing and new starts. Jamie Lee, WOW!!! Just WOW.. her complexity was piercing to witness.

Jamie fucking Lee Curtis and Abby fucking Elliott, they're everything
I love this show so much
I didnt expect the call mum tbh, personally i wouldnt have 😂
This is definitely a top 3 episode for me!

I may be hearing things but I believe at some point you can hear over the hospital speaker:
“Can I get Hands in room..!)

That's one of the things that bothered me about this season. Carmy never went to see Natalie, or even said anything about her.
No such thing as a bottle episode when characters are written this well.
What does being a bottle episode has to do with the writing of characters? It's still a bottle episode more or less
The crossover has already happened when JLC drove a car into her house in the Seven Fishes episode.
Words can’t describe how badly I want Sydney to leave and take that job she deserves a better workplace to be apart of man
We’re shown how the chef making the competing offer is not only inferior in capability to Carmey but also much more petty and unprofessional

Ice chips >forks or whatever everyone says is the greatest episode of television. People only think that cuz it’s my boy Richie.

Ice Chips needs Forks to demonstrate how much development the main characters have gone through
The most blatantly shameless Emmy-bait of an episode I've ever seen lol
You admit it’s good by saying that.
@@marsayde1237 maybe in a world where Emmys actually award quality and are not swayed by set formulas and lobbying, but sadly it is not this world
