for any last of us 2 fans, that shot reminded me of the brief scene where abby dreams of her dad finally smiling at her. both of these are such beautiful moments, im tearing up again just thinking about em
What hurts is watching episode 1 again seeing Carmy start to open the tomato sauce for the spaghetti then throw it out. In the moment I'm like, Hell yeah, stick to your guns, don't make that spaghetti shit. On rewatch I'm going, Nooooo there's cash in there!
Nah it was a big can. Mikey only kept the cash in the small cans. Carmy even subtly draws attention to how weird it was that Mikey had so many small cans despite the cost to ingredient ration being better with the big ones.
It works perfectly for the story, but on rewatch- (my 4th) You can't help but wonder just how much of this brilliant series has been fleshed out. I get why a lot of people found it odd that this show won for comedy. I'm getting Breaking Bad vibes. If I had to think of a word to accurately describe this show, I can only think of Tina's actress responding to Carmy's meal with brilliantly loaded silence. It's so beautifully one-of-a-kind. (I've seen S2, but no meal spoiling, not even the garnish. 🙏)
that final shot of mikey turning around to look at his brother, leaving carmy with the tools to realise their dream of opening up the restaurant will always make me cry
Per the sappy ending...This show earned it. This show is so honest about grief and pain. Things go bad and they stay bad. Even when it gets better, there's another bad on the other side of the hill. And so, when these characters get a happy ending this season, the relief is magnificent. The lie of depression and despair is that if it's bad and it keeps staying bad, then it will always be bad. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. And it isn't true. You can't know what will happen next in life. Good things do happen. These characters start in such an awful place, and we begin to see in this season, even more so in the next, how there is always a way out. For a show that's so honest about despair and dysfunction, it absolutely earns this sentimental hug. Also shows the utter brilliance of the writers to know when to be ugly and honest, and when to bring relief. This episode following "Review", and knowing to put "Forks" after "Fishes" in the next season. Masters of emotional pacing.
@ 6:23 - This show got me back in the kitchen after walking away from culinary arts in the '90s, no joke. It was like I had some mental block, had lost all my skills, and I'd been cooking garbage ever since. Not anymore ;-)
Mikey must’ve been feeling like everything was closing in on him, his addiction and masked depression hidden behind a cheerful facade. But at the same time he was doing everything he could think of to set up Carmy for success. Mikey knew Carm was out there getting better and better, and he wanted to keep him away from his downward spiral. So he didn’t pay his vendors, he stole from his uncle, he hid it all so debt collectors couldn’t touch it. And he trusted Carmy with everything. That’s a lot of love, but it’s almost a kind of selfish, desperate love, Carmy just wanted to be let in, but Mikey in his depression didn’t trust himself with that. It’s so, so fucking sad.
Yeah the thought process is so twisted. You can tell the man was clearly not well. It's heartbreaking really because you just know Carmy would trade all that money for his brother.
Yeah man..this show does a BEAUTIFUL job and just showing the human struggle with mental struggles. It’s messy..but my god is it powerful. Really impacts me and I honestly go WAY deeper in Season 2.
It's sad because it was so unnecessary. If he'd let Carmy upgrade the restaurant while he was still alive, it could have worked beautifully. It would have.
One of the many things I love about this show is how true it is about the waves of grief and transition. The convo between Carmy and Tina shows how much The Beef staff was in survival mode during Mikey's last years out of love. When you've been surviving for so long, the transition to stability can be challenging
As someone who cut their teeth in the restaurant business, this show brings back so many memories. Some good, some bad. As a small business owner in Chicago, it's really been an inspiration for me. Love this city w/all my heart! LET IT RIP!!!!!
I think the romance subplot brings down the specific scenes it’s present for (even though I really want Carmy to be happy and build a life outside of his job), but as a whole season 2 has more and higher high points.
I appreciate your ability to separate the art from the artist. Mad respect. Jon Bernthal is like "can I have more than 2 seconds of screen time, please? Maybe a line?"
That beginning powerful monologue, a known michlien starred chef from San Francisco wrote in an article that he had to play it a few times over because it really struck a chord with him, it hit him deep because he related to it on keeping his head down in his craft while the world and time passed him by.
I love this opening, it's an amazingly informative, and genuinely unsettling nightmare sequence. EDIT: New favorite James moment - "... At least sign something if you're gonna get in a fight." 🤣
I somewhat agree, but I could see that perhaps their friendships have grown so close, that no apology is required. You fight, you make up without talking about it too much, and you move on.
If you think that's good food porn, you should eventually check out the French Romance Drama, The Taste Of Things. The way they showcase and the cook the food the classical French way (no tech used as it's a period piece film, pure and simple cooking/mixtures), it will make you realize how the right combo/mix can be a form of artistry in of itself with cooking.
I'm not sure how many shows could end with that much anticipation on a "Were closed for reconstruction" sign. You know that part when Carmy smiles at Michael and gets that wink at the very end, alot might say that isn't real or that doesn't happen. I tend to disagree. How many times after a funeral or just being in a reminiscing conversation have your heard someone say to a close loved one, what you smiling about or what's so funny? That is that exact scene in someone's head. Not a stretch at all.

For sure but this whole episode is emotional as hell

Forks after Fishes was a fuckin’ crazy emotional rollercoaster watched back to back.
That 7 minute long monologue from Jeremy Allen White sealed the Emmy win for him in my opinion when he won.
I sometimes forget they're acting. This show is so immersive.

Mr. Robot is a good watch, it's nice to have a break between S1 and 2 of the Bear because YOU ARE NOT READY!
I just let people get through S1 so I can watch-along to S2.
2 seasons in and The Bear is probably my 2nd favorite show ever. So Beautiful.
It's deffo up there for me, my provisional top 5 is:
1) Mr Robot
2) The Wire
3) Breaking Bad
4) The Bear
5) True Detective s1

You're gonna love season two just as much. This is definitely my favorite show running atm.
I just realized, watching this show so much. That the bear on the bridge represents his brother.
Oooooo! That’s a cool interpretation.
After watching season 2(no spoilers) to me it’s the weight of being a Berzatto, and the trauma that his whole family inflicted.
@@lee32476 Yes I completely understand that. The bear attacking is like everything in his life just boiling over.

Now we move to season 2!
I find it highly weird that I honestly love your laugh 😂😂😂 cause why ?
Brilliant tune in the end by one of the UK’s greatest bands Radiohead.
Season 1 was just the aperitif. Season 2 is the main course - spectacular
If this show hadn’t gotten a second season, this would have been a perfect ending
I just subscribed to your channel... I am half way done with this post, but I wanted to say what great insight.
When is he watching season 2
Full circle back to episode one when he threw away the sauce, literally and metaphorically throwing away money
Gotta watch szn 2! Even better
let down by radiohead is such a beautiful tune. perfect ending!
Season one for me is perfect, I didn't think that need a season 2, but season came is perfect, maybe better...i don't know how they did
Can't believe we get to see Ritchie as The Thing in the new Fantastic 4 movie!
When it was announced I immediately saw The Thing firing the gun in the air, yelling at the Ball Breakers waiting in line in ep 1😂😂
Perfect casting for real.
Richie is Ben Grimm aka the Thing 😉
