Stellar job to interview this great jazz musician and let him present his dear records. I am a big fan and can only highly recommend his last 3 album releases. The musical performance of him and his varying band mates, and the sound is simply jaw dropping. The pressing qualities are top notch as well. Many thanks!
Wonderful interview, thanks Ken and Jerome! I love both of your albums Jerome, great job. I got to see Sonny in 1996 in Jazz Fest in Montreal, and you were right, his playing live is so engaging and generous. I used to listen to flamenco music too such as Camarón de la Isla and Manitas de Plata. The depth of review of all these albums is precious, thank you very much for the effort. I hope you come and play in Arizona one day, the MIM would be a great venue. Ken, we appreciate all the great work you do for jazz, you’re the best!
Ken, I so love these artist interviews you do. I can hear you learning, and I'm definitely learning, and seeing all the records is amazing! I'd love to hear you do a deep dive with Charles Tolliver. Cheers!
Thank you for your comments. I do my best. Sometimes this is a study and frustration. I’m getting the new Charles Toliver record store day release, will review.
The first live concert I went to with a friend of mine at the age of 20 at The Five Spot was the Max roach quintet with Freddie, Ronnie, Ron, Clifford and Max. Abby Lincoln was sitting at the front table and got up and did a couple of numbers. I continue to go every Friday night for about two months with my friend and it was a great introduction to live jazz.
It was fascinating listening to Jerome Sabbagh talk about the artists and albums that he likes and their influence on his sound and approach. I'll be sure to pick up his albums. The gearhead in me enjoyed a look at his system, analog, Garrard 401 in a proper plinth, tubes and what appears to be electrostatic speakers.
The Miles and Coltrane album is one of my top picks as well. This Dragon pressing is really great and is probably the best live recording I’ve heard of these two greats!
Love, love, love that Jerome picks Don't Try This At Home. It has one of my absolute favorite pieces of music of all time on it: Chime This by Don Grolnick. It's a perfect thing. Composition-wise and playing. Remarkable. If I remember correctly, I think I heard Nussbaum talking about this at a master class somewhere and he said they did many takes of it as Grolnick was a bit perfectionist about it. I miss Grolnick. Anyone reading this who hasn't heard Chime This, check it out. And if you wanna watch a vid of it that includes a transcription of Brecker's solo on it, watch/listen to my upload...
I agree with some of his selections for sure, especially Miles, Dexter, Stan Getz, and Sonny Rollins. I think one of the most complex artists to understand is Ornette Coleman. Once you understand Coleman, everything and everyone else becomes easy. Billy Harper, who still tours with his band The Cookers, is excellent along with Henry Franklin, who often shocked his band mates when they heard him playing. Let's also not get about the legendary Charles Tolliver and Zoot Sims. Thanks for doing this Ken, real music playing from a real artist.
And yet, no one ever seems to want to talk about Zorn. I used to think that about Ornette, but that was in the beginning on my musical education. When I listen to Ornette these days, I hear a lot of TX blues, actually. But that's just me. Good stuff. Carry on.
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Tzadik Records is distributed by the Downtown Music Gallery. Right there in the city you live in. I'm in Livingston, MT and have absolutely zero problem getting Tzadik recordings. I know I'll never come across them in the wild in southwest MT.
@@wylieroth3145 Right. Not exactly great distribution. And if you're not seeing the coverage, you'd like, I'm not the only one thinking this. I don't think Tzadzik has ever hired a publicist, which is how most journos receive promotional records. With dozens of records competing for attention, it helps to put the records in front of those writing the coverage.

There are many excellent jazz musicians in France who merit international recognition. So sorry for my bad humour. I love your videos it's always a pleasure to watch it. All the best.

Great video. I agree with Jerome IMO Rollins is the greatest Jazz improvisor that has ever lived.
Love this series Ken! Keep em coming

Thanks man. Love Jerome’s playing….. it was fun to hear him talk about the greats and what they mean to him.

Wonderful interview, thank you gentlemen! I have most all of Jerome’s recordings and enjoy each of them.

and he wrote Nothing Personal on the first Brecker album.

Good point regarding Ornette Coleman. On one hand, he sounds simple like a folk music artist. But on the other hand is intellect is towering.

@@wylieroth3145 he has almost no vinyl output. Even on CD, they’re very hard to come by as his label does not have great distribution.
