Seems what a lot of people don't realize is the reason the 2 songs work so well together is because both Tricky and Portishead sampled the same track (Ike's Rap) for their respective songs, ironically enough, in the same year.
I felt this mix tonight when I heard Tricky's Hell is Around the Corner on THT and immediately felt like adding Portishead's Only You to it. They so should collab! Dope AF
when listening to hell is around the corner, my head always keeps waiting for beth to start singing and the other way around when listening to glory box. this is an obvious and perfect solution for my problem. so cool, thanks.
i've been a fan of portishead for years, and thought today i would try listening to tricky for the first time. my jaw actually dropped when i realized he used the same sample as glory box on this song! had to check for a mashup... this is awesome!
Damn, I never realised that these two songs relate, you know. Had my Tricky period a few years before Portishead and I just did not add up these two songs. This is awesome!
It's a walkdown. This sample is originally from the audio recording of Isaac Hayes - 'Ike's Rap II'. It was sampled by Portishead - "Glory Box' for half of this mashup. The other half is Tricky - 'Christiansands'. They blend together very nicely. One of the best mashups I have ever heard. There have been many songs with this type of bassline. Check out Quincy Jones - "Summer In The City", or Wallace Collection - 'Daydream' for shining other examples.
They were both done by Portishead. He did the production on Trickys debut album. Glory Box was on Portishead's Dummy which came out in 1994 and Tricky's Debut came out in 1996 - 2 years apart..
UntitledxBeyond I had Portishead"glory box" stuck in my head and came across this sweet mix. damn, reminds me of the awkward teenage years and the 90's.
@idlepixels actually, Dummy was released August 22, 1994, while the sessions for Maxinquaye had started early in 1994, and the album was released in 1995. however, Tricky did not sample Portishead; he used the same original song (Ike's Rap II), and this is proven by the album's liner notes. the only voices that appear at the end of the loop (and not every time) are Martina Topley-Bird's, and what I believe are slowed down samples of Isaac Hayes' voice (it was his song that was sampled)
Nice ! I made a mix with these 3 songs: Ike's Rap II + Glory Box + Hell is Around the Corner): Medley: Isaac Hayes/Portishead/Tricky (Ike's Rap II/Glory Box/Hell is Around the Corner)
@bv3Problems tricky, portishead and massive attack are all from the same small city, were all friend and shared music and ideas. portishead's dummy ft. glory box actually came out in 93 (the single was released 2 yrs later) whereas tricky's maxinquaye didn't come out until 95. irony was not a factor. furthermore, tricky's version sample's portishead, as you can clearly hear beth's voice at the end of the loop
Since I give acts I like--both Portishead and Tricky--the benefit of the doubt, I've always thought of this in the same way as jazz musicians trading fours. Call and response. But then again, who in the Bristol scene wasn't sampling Isaac Hayes?!

That is not the only reason. Only You blends well with his song too. Their styles and flow mesh well.
Another good one is on the album Empyrean by John Frusciante
So loving the mix, it's amazing 🥰🎶
Thanks Bro
Uplifting and still want to cry
This is the mix we all deserved.
You've done what I've always wanted to hear... These two songs linked. Song on repeat for a very long time 👌
This song has always been one; never ended, and never will

Portishead rocked it with that guitar solo (one of the best I've ever hear btw!)
Damn, I never realised that these two songs relate, you know. Had my Tricky period a few years before Portishead and I just did not add up these two songs. This is awesome!
Holy shit, this is one of the best mashups I've ever come across. Chapeau!
I remember this song from SKINS. still listening it to it in 2020.
still listening, 2021 :-)
2024

sos un genio!!
The Tricky half is "Hell is Round the Corner" (which uses the same sample).
Christiansands sounds like this - th-cam.com/video/0vtRiHt73iY/w-d-xo.html
wow tricky's lyrics go so well with the instrumental, this is an awesome mix, good work dude.
I love both versions and thought they would sound sick together, searched for it, ta da. thank you.
❤❤❤
Amo este mix♡ y mas por el momento en que lo escuche hace 3 años

This is simply amazing. Two amazing artists mixed together! PERFECT JUST PERFECT! Perfect choise of musicians, perfect choise of song.Bravo :)
Dieser Song katapultiert dich in andere Sphären , Mystik pur,
When I saw them perform he spent at least one track with his rear to the crowd I've never forgotten.
When I saw Portishead vs Tricky, I had to hear this.
for me it was when I saw glory is around the corner :D
UntitledxBeyond I had Portishead"glory box" stuck in my head and came across this sweet mix. damn, reminds me of the awkward teenage years and the 90's.
Holy shit!!!!
Now if only there were a Massive Attack song that used this sample...
Can you imagine; Massive Attack, Tricky, AND Portishead all on one song. I dunno if my sanity could take that :)
Well they did use Hells around the corner at least.
Eurochild
@@Twitch380 to the mansroom live massive attack and portishead

I remember Bristol as it once was; I can hardly look at the docks now

But the bass line was from the song Daydream by Wallace Collection in 1969 inspired from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake
Wonderful 💋
The handmaids tale
Great choice.

cigarettes and coffee, 2am - looking out my window... looking at people going somewhere, with no reason. cigarettes and coffee, 5am...
It's coffee and cigarettes silly,
Unless you saying 'cigarettes and coffee man. Now that's a combination'.
...2am, after last call...cigarettes and coffee...and neither artists' music is in the the jukebox.
What kind of shitty jukebox ain't got Portishead and Tricky on it?
& Ketamine

The bass destroyed my apple speakers. Next time i will listen to this on a coconut.
Nice ! I made a mix with these 3 songs: Ike's Rap II + Glory Box + Hell is Around the Corner):
Medley: Isaac Hayes/Portishead/Tricky (Ike's Rap II/Glory Box/Hell is Around the Corner)
+francisdavis08 how about remixing this one more this time with Alessia Cara's "Here"
francisdavis08 So would that be Glory is Around the Rap II?
There's nothing ironic about it, they were working together at the time.
AMAZIIIIIIIIIIIING
2019??
Più che perfetto
Very good
2023❤❤❤
should be Ike's glory around the corner.

Ha! I get it. 4:30 minutes of pleasure, 30 seconds of pain.
The original is not Isaac Hayes. The original is Daydream, by Wallace Collection. '69
There is another called DayDream that sounds similar to this too from the ops but I can't remember the singer, sorry
the trip @.@

Walking at 2am to no particular destination with a p coat on during a light drizzle while smoking a cigarette...
Now this is sex after cigarettes and a groggy Monday morning, watching TV with my bloodshot eyes and eating cereal, getting ready for work.
