Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead, Morcheeba, Sneaker Pimps..and so much more, thats my teenage years, born 88. I'm so grateful life was set up that way for me.
Heyyy Caroline, howz ya doin? lol. 80's kid here, born in 75. I feel the same about the music from mid 80's to around mid 90's and that includes the artists you mentioned too.
When Tricky was young, there was a street in his neighbourhood notorious for crime. Because of this, Tricky and his friends called this street ‘Hell’. They would often dare each other to run down the street, and so when writing this song Tricky was influenced by the time that hell was quite literally round the corner.
How do you know this? I'm not making fun of you, I just think that's fucking awesome that you know. I know a few things about Randy Rhodes. But, Tricky is totally killer...😘
Man Tricky is one of those artist I feel never recieved the accolades he really deserves. He solidified the genre and contributed so much, not only to music in general, but he seriously enhanced me and my friends lives so much. Hearing Tricky in the mid to late 90s opened me up to so much more......
Same on all accouts...he should have gotten way more credit and heard...but I feel like he was a hidden gem of our time, and only the cool ones know lol
this is one of those artists that dont create such masterpieces for adoration or acknowlegment he does it simply to express his emotions in lyrical form, as i say, " no addoration nescesery " true artistry
I remember hearing this song back in 1995, it got deep under my skin! I remember back in the day, working in a supermarket stacking shelves for a pittance barely above £3 an hour! This Compact Disc single which I still have to this day, 29 years on cost me 1 and a half hours of my soul! These are what memories are made of! You wouldn’t need to ask me if I’d go back, I never left! Tricky! Hell is not around the corner, it’s arrived :-( At least on the cross we can honestly say, we knew hell was around the corner. 2024 how right you was sir!
The bass-line is taken from Belgian band Wallace Collection's 'Daydream' 1969, who already used the strings from Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake'. The angels with dirty faces, they knew everything going on, they managed to work it into song lyrics so the rest of us could know. Absolute classics, so proud to be part of the generation that listened to this waking up with them. That moment in history will never happen again.
I suppose would be pointless to sample a sample given it would be the same result - unless it was a loophole to use without paying the original artist, or paying less

I'm 33 years old and I grew up listening to this music, it's so cool to see the new generation discovering musicians like Tricky or others, it can change a person. I'm a musician since I discovered Tom Waits in the movie "Down by law" when I was 17 years old and my musical culture is still evolving thanks to series and movies. don't stop at the current crap, keep looking. sorry for my english. hello from corsica
Primus got me hooked on Tom Waits, Adult Swim led me to Aesop Rock. Check out the "Tom Shall Pass" album for the union of two of the most eclectic minds in music. Or the "PortisRock" EP for that old-timey trip-hop goodness.
This song is so incredibly timeless. I played it in between sets once when i was bartending at a music venue. There were quite literally hundreds of people asking me who the artist was. When i told a few who were sitting at the bar had looked into Tricky and by the end of the night we were all discussing music and how amazed they were because the lot of them apparently assumed it was a newer song in which they were being acquainted. Some people like to gatekeep good music and ive never understood that mentality. Spreading the word when someone is interested in something unfamiliar to them is fantastic not just for the listener but the artist as well. Arists being discovered by younger generations is how their music lives on after theyre no longer with us. Id never stand in the way of that process❤
I’ve listened to this song thousands of times, but today listening to it for the first time on vinyl, it made me think that the vinyl itself or the turntable cartridge was damaged… just because of the ticking/scratching sound in the background of the song… that turned into an addictive sound, don’t know why but it grabs my attention and tickle my brain, making it feels bomb like…
This very short piece of music 'movement' was f'ing intense. It nailed the Zeitgeist! It was made for this time and only this time. If you was not there at the right time, you will never understand it. Sorry. But that is a fact. Enjoy and dream of the grey, grey days that spread so much colours!
naturally you would think so if all you listen to is the radio. There is a HUGE underground hip hop scene across the wold teeming with talent, energy and emotion.

One of the greatest Trip-hop tracks of all time.
This whole album is timeless. It is permanently special. It glows forever.
A masterpiece
Crazy to think this will be thirty years old next year, and still sounds fresher than just about anything that's being produced now.
The sample used is by Issac Hayes
The song is Ike’s Rap II
Off the album Black Moses

Tricky's work on Bjork's album Post is really awesome. Some of the best of the 90's alternative.
On my way to find that! Thanks for the tip 7 years later!
Part of the soundtrack of my youth. Still groovy AF after all these decades…
Dark and disturbing, but a very well-made work of art. Kudos.

Beautiful, I miss 90s - I miss shoegazing and triphop. These two def have to come back and be reappreciated.
The angels with dirty faces, they knew everything going on, they managed to work it into song lyrics so the rest of us could know. Absolute classics, so proud to be part of the generation that listened to this waking up with them. That moment in history will never happen again.
Can we talk about how mesmerizing these visuals are? this is almost exactly what I pictured while listening to this I'm in awe of Tricky
Yeah! Couldn't agree more, Tricky just looks demonic. Nailed it!
It's a whole slick vampire series that was never written!
My advanced writing professor made us listen and watch this song. I’m here because of that because it’s so good!!
still one of the very best tracks on my life's soundtrack
Tricky didn't sample Portishead and Portishead didn't sample Tricky, they both sampled Isaac Hayes. Both songs are great.
I suppose would be pointless to sample a sample given it would be the same result - unless it was a loophole to use without paying the original artist, or paying less

Pure poetry. Standout song on a standout album. I bought "Maxinquaye" the day it was released back in 1995 and don't think it's been bettered since.

August 2024 and I've been listening to Tricky kid for 30 years.
This beat is originally Isaac Hayes - Ikes Rap II from the 70's. Portishead and Tricky both sampled his track.
And Alessia Cara, Maverick Sabre and Snoh Alegra and and and...

Isaac Hayes took it from the Daydream song from a Belgian band Walace Connection. It was a hit in the 60’s.
