Where is Thunderbolt on Threadripper?! Here it is, but...

  • What's the hold up with Thunderbolt on Threadripper? Is there some technical limitation?
Here we show off the Gigabyte Designare X399 w/the Gigabyte Alpine Ridge TB controller. We got it working on our own -- it's a DIY solution.
Don't expect to buy these parts and have it magically work. It won't.
But if you can add some secret sauce firmware in just the right places, and tweak a kernel module here and there....
    then
Thunderbolt 3 works just great! (Except hot plug, we couldn't get that working.. well kinda?) It would appear to us that we're just waiting on certification. Maybe intel is dragging their heels certifying?
We have a lot more footage to show than just this -- but we're hoping this video kicks off some conversation around Thunderbolt on Threadripper.
We don't want to say too much about how we did it. But you can figure it out, we promise.
Who needs it? What's the use case? And what's up with hot plug?

This is really cool. Perhaps TB3 on ThreadRipper will mean we get wider TB3 adoption on HEDT desktop in general.

    • @nicholasjohnson3542
      @nicholasjohnson3542 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, but the question is whether the issue is manufacturer interest in implementing it on other platforms, or if it is that Intel is discouraging it (X399 Designare EX knocked back from certification for petty reason of no iGFX when that is not even needed, and Intel has Thunderbolt motherboards without iGFX).

Man, I am just following your channel for a month and I am really impressed. Compared to other "tech tubers" your channel has exclusive and far more informative content. Where most stop on a basic hardware (review)level you are also software “guy’s” and I love the Linux content in general :D Keep doing great informative (non RGB :p ) tech content.
If you could create a similar enterprise type channel (or know one) that talks about “real” server, high speed networking, and more things related. It would be so interesting to me and others I think. Learning more about that part of the industry in a reasonably understandable way (don’t mind to do research on the things I don’t understand) would just be awesome. As an enthusiast today you are “able” to buy what looks like similar hardware soon.

This is great news in the audio recording world. The majority of modern D/AC are Thunderbolt. And as we all know, AMD is far more budget friendly when it comes to core count. Pro Tools in particular enjoys core count over clock speed. This would be amazing when it becomes main stream.

Sam Nasab - possibly. Although no matter how much I love Thunderbolt, I'd rather abandon it than be stuck with Intel forever. Eventually Intel is going to have to release it into public domain and integrate it with PCI standards for it to have a long term future.

One thing that it could be useful for is what Linus does with his home system. He put his gaming servers on a rack in another room, then used a thunderbolt display/usb device in his office connected with a long fiber cable to his gaming system. It basically makes for a completely silent gaming experience even if you have a noisy cooling solution.

More likely Asrock, IMHO. Asrock is the one who does the most innovation, personally - jamming X299 into ITX, and they also enable PCIe bifurcation on their ITX motherboards (at least the Intel ones, no idea about their AMD ones). The only other one to do the bifurcation on ITX is Gigabyte. Asus might be the most appealing to the mainstream, but they do not usually do whacky or insane things.

Video professionals (especially Colourists) would be very excited about this. We work with codecs such as R3D which are cpu core intensive, and multiple graphics cards, decklink addon cards, raid controllers, network cards so the pci lanes of threadripper is very attractive. However a lot of devices in the video world are also based around thunderbolt, which has been a major block for me in threadripper adoption.

A Lightning Bolt would not be limited to 2M cables, though.
Honestly, where are the optical ones already?
Personally Thunderbolt needs to revert to being Light Peak.
I hope they designed the ability to insert optical fibres into the USB-C connector, otherwise they will need to change again, or use transceiver cables (which are inherently unreliable).
The USB-C spec has changed to allow direct-connected devices to reconfigure the 4x USB 2.0 wires as a third super speed channel - but this will require new cables, as the existing ones use poor quality wires for USB 2.0. I am guessing the new cables will be e-marked as being fit for purpose. The first standard to make use of this is VirtualLink for VR. But Thunderbolt should be able to make use of the third lane to increase bandwidth without too much of an increase in signalling rate. But it is only delaying the inevitable - that copper is not enough. If Thunderbolt started off optical at 10Gbps (abandoned because of cost), then at 40Gbps over copper, we must be just about at the limits (as they thought it would need to be optical from the get-go).

I've been hoping for this for MONTHS. Pulling footage from SSDs on thunderbolt would be uber fast ! I hope this becomes a thing that can be repeated

Bought the Titan Ridge v1, hoping I could get thunderbolt on my X570 Asus board and 3900x, to connect an external sound card. First tried the PCI 3.0 slot, but Thunderbolt control center would only acknowledge the sound card if I had turned it own prior to boot. Turning off would not appear again, Then tried PCI 4.0 slot and I could turn the sound card on/off in windows and control center would allow me to see it. PCI to PCI bridge error codes like you mentioned and 3.1 Extensible errors from windows drivers. After hit and miss with installing drivers etc, Windows would freeze when I turned on the sound card in the 4.0 slot. Tried changing bios to read as Gen 4 slots instead of Auto but no options for configuring thunderbolt since this is an external pci card. Really needed this to work may. Glad someone addressed this. Thanks.

That's cool. I don't expect amd to bother with getting Old TR and Ryzen certified for Thunderbolt. I hope they get it for Zen2 gear

      1. Intel "Bong"
      2. Say that like GLaDOS, and it becomes even more funny.

You have no idea how good this is for audio professionals. All professional audio hardware is moving to thunderbolt and not having any options other than intel is not good for anyone. I really hope we see this in the wild soon!

lol. UBER Bolt! How about Pseudo BOLT? Great job! Never would have thought that the UEFI driver blob would be compatible.

Since you have been fiddling a bit with Threadripper. If you stress a single core using Statuscore or some other program on a 1950X in Windows and only see around 3.7GHz could the CPU be defect? I have a Zenith Extreme and cool it using a 360 Liqtech. BIOS settings that affect XFR etc are enabled. When I contacted AMD and asked and instead of technical support I got an RMA number... felt strange.

Thunderbolt 3 on threadripper is an absolute "must" for geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, CAD, video production, simulation, etc., where your data is not on a 10GbE network but on direct attached storage for performance reasons.

Well Done!!! The only thing stopping me from moving to AMD for my DAW is the absence of TB. My Audio Interfaces are TB only, so i am stuck on intel.

when thunderbolt can power and keep picture on screen with one cable this will get more popular with consumers. Less cables is always more appealing to average non-techy.

windows vm with a thunderbolt gpu passed-through? 6-8 core laptops once they become more prevalent would be great for that if it's possible
