The lawyer took the retainer fee agreement to court with him to have the defendant sign and to receive his fee that day. The punk defendant even produced the unsigned contract to Judge Milian! Unfortunately, the lawyer didn't get it signed and his money BEFORE their case was heard. Once he got the defendant a reduced charge, the punk decided to stiff him. The attorney was clearly entitled to that fee!
I think the lawyer did negotiate that deal for him. The lawyer was a lil shady too though. If that deal had already been on the table, he could have just told the prosecutor he'd take it.

This is a case of two crooked people. I'm almost positive that the plaintiff weaseled his way onto this guy's case. He was eavesdropping in the court house - probably looking for someone in a tough spot to hire him - and approached the guy. Then he carsalesman-ed himself to the already angry guy and the defendant probably just said something like "yeah yeah fine" or whatever which is non-commital but the lawyer felt he could call it a verbal agreement so he showed up at the next case. The defendant then was probably like, oh sweet, I got me lawyer but since he knew he never intended to say yes, even though he knew the game, he figured he could just play dumb and see where the chips fall. What work did the attorney do? The defendant said the offer from the DA was made without the lawyers' input. Call the DA and ask if the lawyer negotiated the deal or did they just offer it to the defendant. They do that a lot to help clear cases faster.
