The defendant should put up a clear sign in his repair shops- “items not picked up by x days will be disposed of.” This way any customers will come promptly, and will not complain, if you give a leeway of some extra time. If jet skis are like cars, they’re only good for about a dozen years, and not worth much if it needs an engine.
How about people pick up their stuff? See if someone cares about an item at a shop they call, find out how things are going with repairs, how long it'll be, etc. Everyone knows shops get rid of items that are abandoned. This guy waited for that to happen so he could turn around and try to sue for full value.
The jet ski guy is a liar He told the judge he never went back to the shop or saw the guy after he dropped it off, but in the interview at the end he claimed he went back to get it and the guy told him he'd scrap it for him if he wanted so he left it. But claims he was supposed to get the money for the scrap. I think he did exactly what the guy said he did - I also think he did what most people do when they have a piece of junk they can no longer use and don't want - they make it someone else's problem, but then want to profit from it. I *might* have believed part of his tale if he hadn't changed stories from what he told the judge and what he told the interview guy. The devil is in the details.
I've junked 2 cars in different cities in NY and no one ever asked me for proof that it was my car. They came towed the car away and gave me 350 the first time and 400 the second. No receipts or anything.
