    Over thirty years ago the first thing we bought when my wife was pregnant was not a crib or anything like that but a junior back tandem (23 x 17), we had raced a 21 x 21 for a few seasons. Kiddie cranks, a borrowed trailer and a 21 x 19 allowed us to ride as a family until the kids could ride the 21 x 21 together. My first grandchild is due to arrive tomorrow, and although I have kept the junior back I would love to see them with one (or even two) of these.

    Great to see the 4x4 follow up to the standard Quest discussed so well here. I had a few non faired recumbent trikes then brought a Quest to New Zealand from Holland. The speed and comfort are night and day to most other trikes or bikes on the road. Electric assist might limit most velomobiles as they tend to cut out at speed. Hill climbing was very good on the Quest enhanced by resting your forearms on both sides of the trike enabling more power to the pedals. If anyone wants to see my old web site for some great pics of my outings, see "Planet pride in the South Pacific". Ride safe.

      Peter Williamson Having the e-assist only for low speed (read hills) works better with velomobiles than any other pedal cycle as it substantially improves average speed on hills but when you hit the flats you’re going at a respectable speed so assist isn’t necessary. With upright bikes assist helps till 15.5mph in Europe but then it’s difficult to pedal any faster due to air resistance. As a result the e-assisted range on a velomobile is significant.

    I've gone for a bulk view tonight, I think its now morning😂 of your video's and noticed this amazing machine has appeared again, I watched three video's you did about two or three different machines👍 I like the four wheel Velomobile apposed to the three with regards to touring and plenty of room in there for tent etc plus cover from the rain👍... Maybe I'll have a look at a Velomobile as well as the hpv fs20🤔 there seem to be many positives especially you can have a Rohloff fitted to it, that's what I would do if I went the HP route, or maybe even a Pinion drive🤔... What is the price tag on the machine in this video? Great video👍 lots of useful information.

      Yes, it’s definitely a risk riding in such a low vehicle. Making it highly visible and audible can mitigate that risk significantly. I plan on adding something like a hemispherical “disco ball” with lasers or something like those emergency vehicle flashing lights for the highest point of my QV. I don’t want to add a flag, but I am considering it. One thing I’ve noticed is that the beep beep of the horn sounds too much like a car that people don’t immediately look for a bike, so that’s another piece of the presence/safety puzzle I am contemplating on.

    Thank you both very much for doing this review. I have a QV on order at the moment, with a mountain drive up front, but with an eye on power assist as I live at the top of a hill. The Bafang 8fun has an adaptor available from velomobeil.nl, but the Tongsheng is not something I had come across.
    My reasoning behind ordering the QV was as a machine to use when it is raining and during the winter for riding to work, and your comments reassure me about my reasoning! Now, having seen the Rolhoff setup on your amazing machine, I will have some further thinking to do :-)
    Congratulations John: I see you are the latest to put your name down for a QV as well!

    Lovely video and velomobile. What I think is a bit weird is that there is just so much extra stuff in that QV. For me, a velomobile is supposed to be stripped down, just the bare necessities, so it is lightweight and aerodynamic, so human power is enough. This has a rohloff, battery, alarm system, hydraulic brakes, a child’s seat, tyre pressure meters, wattage gauge, , a camera, a throttle... I wonder if you can really compare a DF to a QV if it has electric assist.

    • @velo-ads4206
      @velo-ads4206  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jan Trenson yep correct Andrew has installed a lot of extras which is perfectly fine if he likes that sort of thing I suppose. I would choose to go for the bare minimum if I purchase one, but I do think the tire pressure sensor is a necessity as my friend John H who owns a Qv says the suspension is soft so you don't realise you have a flat for quite a few miles sometimes. I was particularly interested in how the handling compared to the DF, and an electric assist would not really affect that comparison.

    • @andrewallen9918
      @andrewallen9918 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Unless you can create a 4 wheel velomobile with good storage capacity that’s sub 10kg then human power alone is never going to be a practical option if you live in a hilly area with stop start traffic (if time or excessive sweat is not a concern then it might be ok; depends on one’s objective and local topography). That was the idea with the DF (albeit a 3 wheeler) but at 25kg it’s still slow going up hills; with e-assist it was incredibly efficient and acceleration was immense, but not nearly as practical as the QV. When you’re creating a highly efficient car replacement then the sacrifice is a heavier VM but still incredibly light cycle compared to any motor vehicle. Alarm, tyre pressure sensors, throttle (it’s very light and it’s just for testing the transmission) and even the Rohloff add very little weight (I don’t have dual/triple rings or a rear cassette/derailleur). Riding in urban and suburban environments with the Rohloff is also easier. Yes, this e-assist adds 8.3kg but that includes a battery that’s almost 1kWh. I hope to remove the wattage screen as someone has now adapted another e-assist display screen that incorporates wattage info into it. Child’s seat I haven’t used yet (I’m an uncle not a parent) but hope to do so in the near future; I leave it out when not in use) I often use the hydraulic brakes as a dragging brake to save wear on the front drums or for greater stopping power if needed on steep hills.

    I have an idea what might cause the clapping noise you talked about. Took me almost 3000km to figure out the noise on my QV #76. It was the derailleur cable clapping a wall inside the "rear transmission box". It could be the brake cable on his #73 ?

    • @andrewallen9918
      @andrewallen9918 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your suggestion but thankfully I worked out where the noise came from 😅. There’s a block that’s mounted near to the rear chain to help alignment and ensure it doesn’t derail. The ‘quick link’ is wider than the other chain links and just clipped the inside of the block; once I centred the chain within the block, no more tapping noise 🙂.

      Sage Michael Hi sage great to see you here, my sons two and the seat is way too long for him so I think four or five depending on the size of the child maybe even older. You could even have him on your lap when older, as Ymte at inter-city bikes has his kids on his lap sitting sideways in a DF XL and that works a treat.

      As John said I was very surprised at how much space there was; there are extra holes in the aluminium plates that secure the seat and it was on the highest setting (which equates to smallest child) so yes you could have a child that’s a lot older; I think shoulder width may be the limiting factor before height as it’s a fair bit narrower than the adult rider seat up front. I’d have to relocate the battery for the higher settings though as it would hit the battery (could possibly put an extra battery mount in the boot).

      @@velo-ads4206 hehe, I see now that I was not specific enough. You see, I am kinda a nerd for efficiency (speed output per watt input) ;) ... so I am wondering how fast it is.

    • @AdamLogan313
      @AdamLogan313 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      z0uLess that depends on how strong of a peddler you are, what watt motor you install if you install one and your environment and conditions. I’m not a fit peddler like touring or race cyclists are, and I have the 850 watt TSDZ2 motor, and my environment is hilly as I live in a valley, it rains often here, we get a fair amount of wind but it’s not like a plain or desert. I cruise at about 30 mph at max e-assist settings. I usually ride at e-assist levels 4 or 7 out of 9 though, and can maintain 20 - 25 mph pretty easily even on moderate hills. Very steep hills will make me drop in speed to 3-5 mph. I have to dial down the e-assist to 5 or less to really get the benefit of exercise while cycling with e-assist and while I have the throttle, I don’t use it. On hills I can still get a decent workout in the higher e-assist levels though depending on how steep the hill is, but, of course that will burn through your battery pack a lot faster. I’m sure more speed is possible, but with more speed I would definitely invest in better brakes and tires. It is scary sometimes even at 30 - 40 mph (speed can easily exceed 35 mph when going downhill), if you have the brakes on going over a manhole, it can jerk your QV around. I’ve experienced sliding around corners at high speed at the bottom of a long steep descent with rain, but even when dry it’s still a bit dicey. I’ve learned to be bold and merge into the auto lane decisively when doing curves at high speed and to corner with as much strategy with criss-crossing as possible, as in, being as far left in the auto lane when approaching a right hand curve, moving to the right at the apex, and then moving back to far left or center of auto lane exiting the curve and then merging back into bike lane or tackling the next curve by staying in the auto-lane. So, yeah, I’m sure you could get a motor to give you 60+ mph in the QV if you are determined to, but I think you’d be asking for a serious injury if you’re lucky or more likely a fatal crash if you actually cycled at those speeds. 30 mph - 40 mph is plenty fast in the tiny carbon fiber shell that the QV is. That being said, I would love to see something in this form factor get to the point where 75 mph feels comfortable & safe. We can dream 🙂.

    • @AdamLogan313
      @AdamLogan313 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a seat maybe, don’t see a second passenger having enough room to pedal with legs, but maybe hand cranks might work. I do have a lot of unused space in the forward section of the QV, it’s definitely designed for the very tall people of their region. I would ask the builders to design what you want rather than butcher this already exorbitantly expensive cycle though if possible. I think they might already be developing a QV equivalent of the DuoQuest, but I’m not positive on that. I would be concerned about stopping power carrying that much weight on skinny tires though. Fattening the tires would exacerbate the issue of the already very wide turning radius due to the tire wells. Suspension would need some adjustment & modification too. If you do this be sure to document your process well, I’m sure plenty of people would be interested.

      Kjeld motor runs well; I have a similar motor on my windcheetah which still works after 4.5 years; haven’t done that much mileage on the QV. The display I’ve had to replace for the original windcheetah motor. Yes it is an offset BB.

      It’s great, I have the 850 watt version which is legal in most states in the USA. I cruise at about 30 mph with this motor at max settings. I usually ride between 20-25 mph. I bought mine from www.eco-ebike.com/collections/motors/products/tsdz2-w-850c-torque-sensing-pedal-assist-with-throttle-and-e-brakes-36v-48v-52v-10-18a-250-750w They offer a variety of wattage options based on your needs or limiting laws. They answered my questions with supreme patience (I started having zero knowledge) and they gave me excellent support after I received the products as well. I asked for the cooling mod (not listed on the site) for an additional fee and highly recommend it so your motor will last longer, or you can sustain higher speeds (or torque if you climb steep hills like I do in the Willamette Valley) for longer without cooking the motor. If it were me I would pass on the throttle and go for the temperature probe in the motor, but I suppose if you’re in Europe a throttle would be illegal anyways. The offset bracket from velomobiel.nl is not fully functional for the TSD, you will have to get creative to install the the TSDZ2 onto the supplied offset bracket securely. Or better yet request velomobiel.nl to design an offset bracket specifically for the TSDZ2 to spare yourself and future customers the trouble. If you email me or direct message me on Facebook/adamlogan313 I’d be happy to send you some pictures showing the TSDZ2 & Offset BB.
