Have you ever wondered what happens to a painkiller, like ibuprofen, after you swallow it? Medicine that slides down your throat can help treat a headache, a sore back, or a throbbing sprained ankle. But how does it get where it needs to go in the first place? Céline Valéry explains how your body processes medicine.

Wouldn't this be considered more pharmacokinetics than pharmacodynamics?
Not a pharmacologist, but pharmacokinetics is how the body affects the drugs (the liver enzymes turning the drugs into metabolites) whereas pharmacodynamics is how drugs affect the body (the mechanism of blocking pain) so I guess the video has a bit of both?
I'm not a pharmacologist, but I am a pharmacist. What I remember from school is that pharmacokinetics involves the ADME processes (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion), whereas pharmacodynamics involves the mechanism of action.
You are right that there is a brief mention of mechanism. However, the video focuses more on how the drug molecules move after ingestion and less on how the medicine works (i.e. COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition).

Has anyone got that feeling when they're stuck in the Ted Ed loop? LIke, it's so hard ignore a Ted Ed vid in your recommendations and when you click it and finish it, there's always another one waiting for you in the side column. How does alcohol affects this process? I see warnings not to take medicines with alcohol
knocknockify Alchohol is technically a poison, so while its in your system your liver is working like crazy. So it can't process your medicine at the same rate it would when you're sober and you could easily overdose.

How is alcohol a sin...? Jesus literally turned water into wine once.
knocknockify It depends on the drugs you're taking! Consuming alcohol with paracetamol, whose metabolites are toxic, for example, would result in even more toxicity to the liver. But in the case of hypnotic drugs like valium, its respiratory depression effect will be likely be multiplied if taking with alcohol, and that might be fatal. So tl;dr - Alcohol will make what's already bad worse ;)
Alcohol is processed in the liver the same way as medicine. Taking medicine while consuming alcohol can overwork and damage your liver.

What about drugs that affect your brain like to help ADD? (Ex: Concerta)
thenaynaycat it's slow release and has a tougher inner shell so it dissolves in the system slower
Those affect the levels of neurotransmitters during synaptic transmission. eg, people with depression generally have low serotonin levels meaning a low rate of fire for that neuron and so by blocking the selective re uptake molecules that reabsorb serotonin using SSRIs (selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors), the concentration increases and reverses the low serotonin levels, and in turn some of the symptoms. For ADD, adderal and other drugs can be used that block different re uptake molecules that are associated with Dopamine which helps with motivation and concentration.

And that's why the doctor recommends you to rest after taking the medicine! The lesser the heart rate, slower the blood will flow through the liver in a given time and therefore slower it will remove the medicine out of your body increasing it's effectiveness.

Aleena there is no cure at the moment. Different people have different reactions to some of the “potentially helpful” drugs on the market and some have had great success changing small things like dietary changes or adding yoga to the routine (I can’t help but wonder if they had through chronic migraines or just tension headaches Simply because I haven’t been that lucky). It sucks. I take triptans, lay in the dark hoping to sleep it off. .. & life passes by. Ugh Fingers crossed they come up with something and I am sorry to hear you have them too.

As far as I know , the APIs of Ibuprofen molecule converting to inactive metabolites is termed as 1st pass metabolism. But why some molecule gets converted to inactive while some escape?. How the molecules manage to escape 1st pass metabolism in liver?
